Embraced by the Sun Reviews
I really, really loved this book. The story telling and world building were second to none. Peter's two friends, Jesse and David, take him to St. Maarten to celebrate his last few days of freedom before he gets married. Peter has an affliction where he gets sunburned really easily and so spends most of the time hiding in the shade, until he is noticed by Micah, a fire sorcerer who immediately recognizes Peter as his mate. He also realizes that the reason the sun bothers Peter so much is because he is a wind (ice)sorcerer whose powers are still suppressed.Ok, so I saw the cover and thought, 'Eh.' I read the blurb and said, 'Eh'. THEN I read the sample. I was hooked. This book just touched me in a way one hasn't in a long time. I was literally reading the book uber slowly because I didn't want it to end. The author takes her time to build the story. The attraction, the revelation about the sorcery, Peter's denial about being gay, his eventual capitulation...it was all done extremely well. Even better than that, was the sorcery aspect. This was no hokey, fly by night, 2-bit power. It is clear that the author thought this world through. The powers are well described, Micah's attempts to familiarize Peter with his powers are detailed and enlightening and the sex - ooh lawd! Fire and ice!So why 4 stars instead of 5 gazillion? I loved everything about the book except the ending. Because the rest of the book was done with so much detail, I was expecting more. Peter's official training was covered in a 2 page epilogue? No. I thought we would get to see him join the council and actually fight alongside Micah. He had way too many anger issues, and that bit of darkness within him, for things to be wrapped up like at the end. Even at the council meeting, he refused to bow because he has now rejected all things submissive. That would have to be a problem working under an umbrella organization, where there are rules to be followed. I would LOVE to see a sequel where he is fighting alongside Micah, but there are continuing anger issues, issues with how far to go punishing his enemies or issues re their D/s relationship where even though Peter is the Dom in the bedroom, Micah is technically his superior outside of it. We kept hearing that Micah was a stronger sorcerer and that Peter knew Micah could beat him, but I wanted to see it! I wanted Peter to realize that the man he wanted to take as his 'housewife':-) could take him in a fight and bring him to his knees; he just chose not to. I was so looking forward to Peter fighting Micah for his training exam, but it didn't happen. There is so much more of this story to be told. Remember what the seer said, the ice would never fail Micah. No matter what happened it would always melt for him. For me, that implies that things are going to happen where Peter's goodness is called into question, and yes, the issue happened on St. Maarten where he went beserk, but that wasn't enough.Back to the D/s angle,(sorry, I'm just all over the place lol), I LOVED the way the author handled Peter's need to dominate and Micah's acceptance of/mutual desire for that, even though he was the stronger one. Dammit, now I'm going to have to go read the book again, even though I just finished it last night. Mya, pleassssssssssssssssssssseeeee (gets on hands and knees, with freshly baked cookies) PLEASE, consider a sequel. This is an AMAZING book. It just needed 3 or 4 more chapters to really be complete...or a second book altogether.
2.5 stars. For me this was just OK.On the plus side there is a lot of sex, which is well-written, and it's all possessive and emotional and angsty. However I had a lot of minor niggles, plus the overall plot wasn't enough to pull me in.1) Peter goes to Sint Maartens for his bachelor do, but the bride wants to "get his opinion on additional guests" for the wedding when he gets back? This makes no sense. This isn't a right-before-the-wedding activity, for the kind of wedding these guys seem to be having.2) Peter is not sought after he (view spoiler)[kills three muggers (hide spoiler)] because "no one had been able to identify Peter and details were sketchy at best". "Dozens of eyes" saw Peter. All of Sint Maarten has a population of under 40,000, and even though there's a huge number of tourists the briefest police enquiries would show that a blond-haired guy spent the evening morosely getting drunk and winning $3,000 at the casino around the corner. 3) Every time the plot involves the broader storyverse of Peter and Micah's powers the author glosses over it. "Micah explained in full how the Anadelphia could tap into various elements, control them and hone them. He summarized with a “that is what we are,” just as the waitress arrived with their drinks.""Well, let me say that I actually enjoyed battling the water guard. It wasn’t an all-out death match, but the earth guard however…"This was very annoying. So was the idea of a secret cloaked island near Hawaii. Can't these guys just meet in Hawaii? Otherwise it's like Tracy Island.I didn't love having Peter as the focus for the D/s, as he learns to deal with his dominating tendancies. I prefer stories from the sub's pov.Apart from the niggles there is nothing hugely wrong with the story, it just wasn't what I personally like.
I absolutely loved this book! The characters were so well rounded and even when they were being assholes, I still loved them. I want more, please!
I loved this story. It was full of romance, easy to read, understand and follow along. Loved the elemental mate theme. The characters were believable and realistic. Plot line was catching and just a great read.
Wow. So good.
Excellent! Surprisingly well done for a "free" book. This is well worth the money should Mya choose to charge for it!
I knew there was a reason I was putting off reading this book. So I finally read it to fulfill an A-to-Z Challenge. The premise of the book was interesting enough. The book started off well but the execution sucked ass big time. This book was just over 5000 kindle location but sorely needed an editor, it was too long! Here are my issues: the world building wasn't constructed well enough for me. Why was St. Maarten such a hotbed for sorcerors? How do they keep the humans who know about their existence from running their mouth? Nothing was done to ensure that Jesse wouldn't run his mouth about Peter.Peter was this submissive in his relationship with Alison but then he's this dominant with Micah. I didn't buy that. I expected Micah to be the dominant one. It would have been nice to see Micah top Peter as well. There was too much talking going on between the characters and not enough action. Once we got to the final action it was like "so what?"
Embraced by the Sun for the record I bought this book back in 2012 long before I discovered I don't like mystical, magical, fairies, angels and Gods all that other stuff. I did like that the characters were mixed race, yeah! This was just ridiculous to me I know doggone well I wouldn't buy it today. So sorry.
Loved this! I just wished that there was more world building, but hopefully there will be other books in this universe!
