Another of my daughters favourite books. A great story with an equally great message about how greed is never a good thing and kindness should always be paid in kind.

Considering this is the story of the golden goose, and is literally called The Golden Goose, I'm surprised that the goose itself is only in the story for a mere few pages. The story itself wasn't so great, and there's a lot of anger towards the simpleton, a lot of malice, and it put me off. I know that this was how things were done back then, and still happen today, but it just put me off. A smart lad for what he's meant to be portrayed as, but other than that, there wasn't really anything in this story that really gripped me. A shame, I was excited to read this one.

WrensReads Review:I have the complete set of the Grimm Fairy-Tales, and there are so many that I haven’t read! They are very short, as one would know, so I have decided to read each one and give them a review. Some are very vulgar, some are very cute and some don’t even make sense. Some of them are well known fairy-tales and some have never been told. Some are fairy-tales we know but are not the same because they have been downplayed for the children. I quickly read this book after I finished The Fairy’s Return by Gail Carson Levine, a fairytale based on The Grimm Brother’s The Goose Girl and found them both very likable! Three sons go out to cut some wood (separate occasions) and a young man comes and ask them to share some of the food they brought with them. Only one shares with him and is gifted with a goose. He goes to stay at an inn. It turns out that the goose sticks to whoever touches it (besides the son). The son learns of the contest to win the princess: make her laugh (for she is very serious and never laughs or smiles). Will he make her laugh? Will people be stuck to the goose forever? How violated is that goose? Will the other two brothers recover from their accidents? This is a very wonderful story. I like the different ways to tell a story. The original sheds light on the stories based off of it. I recommend this very short story to anyone who loves fairy-tales.WrensReads | Goodreads | Twitter | Instagram

Traditional literature book #5This is a story about the eldest son who goes out in the forest to cut down a tree. An old man asks him for some food and a drink. The eldest son shares with him and in return gets a golden goose. He takes the golden goose to an inn where three daughters get stuck to the goose. As the eldest son heads to the king, people keep getting stuck to the goose. As he approaches the castle the princess who has never laughed before starts laughing. The king had said whoever can make the princess laugh can marry her. Before he could marry her, he needed to complete three tasks which he did and ends up marrying the princess.

AQ building story with plenty of call-backs. A king wishes to obtain a bird which lays golden eggs, and sends his sons to capture the creature. The first two fail, while the youngest is guided by a talking fox, which tells him all the things he must not do, so he may escape all danger. The boy does all the things. It's...rather frustrating, actually. Not one of the classic Grimm tales, but it's okay. Probably not interesting enough for most kids to accept this as a primary bedtime story, but acceptable for them to read on their own, as they grow more skilled.

A woman had three sons; the first two were talented but selfish and didn't succeed. The third was not talented but he was kind and ended up far exceeding the success of his brothers.

The boy Simpleton, does more with his act of kindness, than any one who had a different agenda...and in the end he came off the winner.

Well I finally got to read the Golden Goose after someone made a reference to the story in conversation last night. I definitely enjoyed it.

The story was a good one and was quite amazing to imagine lots of people all stuck to each other and trying not to stand on each other's feet.

Silly story, that while well written, I failed to see the point. Why did everyone get stuck together?

I found this is a little more hard to enjoy as it was one of the more eccentric fairy-tales.

Sweet fairy tale gently showing the rewards that come from showing kindness. The illustrations are the best part of the book; they show much more than is ever mentioned in the text.
