In clear language, Fletcher and Portalupi explain the simple principles that underlie the writing workshop, and explore the major components that make it work. Each chapter addresses an essential element, then suggests five or six specific things a teacher can do to implement the idea under discussion. There’s also a separate chapter entitled “What About Skills,” which shows how to effectively teach skills in the context of writing. Writing Workshop: The Essential Guide Reviews
A quick short read that is full of great example and tips for the teaching using a writing workshop model. I think this is a great introductory book for teachers who are trying workshop model for the first time or new teachers. I have taught using the workshop model before, and still found it useful because the authors give important background information on the structures in a writing workshop. It's helpful to know the whys and the how's before delving into workshop mode. I took plenty of notes and will probably refer back to the book again. It's a good basic foundational book.
This book offers a good timeline for implementing a writing workshop in the primary grades. This book isn't too useful for a high school setting where students are writing essays. One part I like about this book is that the authors have a "Making it Work" section in every chapter. These serve as important tasks to follow to make the writing workshop process run smoothly. However, there is too much writing and not enough step by step daily/weekly/monthly guides. Perhaps that is what I was looking for in this book but I will have to look elsewhere for that type of structure.
Very helpful book, full of great ideas and easy to navigate. Solid immediate take-aways.
