This 1889 play is billed as a comedy in four acts. And there are 33 cast members!! I did not try very hard to keep them all straight; just the main characters, and the play turned out to be much easier to read than I expected when I saw that cast list. I think it would be a hoot to watch on stage: it moves very fast and there is a lot going on, at a frantic pace at times. In Act I we meet nearly everyone, but the main event is that there are three peasants who have arrived at the city home of Leonid Fyodoritch Zvezdintsef, who owns over 60,000 acres in various areas. The peasants wish to buy some land that they had discussed with Leonid in the summer, but now he does not want to sell to them with the same terms. One of the peasants is the father of one of Leonid's servants, young Simon, the butler's assistant. He wants to marry Tanya, lady's maid to Leonid's wife. When Leonid refuses to sign the paper and accept a down payment on the land, Tanya decides she will try to help the peasants. There is a hypochondriac wife, a spoiled daughter, a son who is even more spoiled, a lot of servants and friends going in and out all the time, plus a seance! And yes, this is a comedy but of course it was written by Tolstoy, so there are layers to the laughing. Peasants and servants make some pointed observations about the lifestyle their 'betters' lead, and spiritualism takes more than a few knocks on the chin as well. I really enjoyed this, and I am very much looking forward to reading more of Tolstoy's plays.

Ne (skroz) loša komedija, ništa posebno. Najduhovitijim aspektom smatram jezičnu razinu tj. žargon/ šatrovački govor kojim se izražava posluga i kmetovi. Btw, Tolstoj satirizira pomodarstvo isprazne vlastele (ponajviše tada aktualni tzv. spiritizam).

This play is really interesting, even though there were a lot of characters. Maybe too many characters...

nisam fan drama općenito, komedija posebno, osrednje dinamično...
