FOR FANS OF HARRY POTTER AND PERCY JACKSON!!it's about time we are introduced to a strong young male leadthat resembles harry potter and the great percy jackson. No this is notin any way like the books I mentioned above. it's unique all on it's own. this was such an epic middle grade read, I had to catch my breathat moments in this book. The action was perfect and the story was so brilliantly unique. If you love fantasy novels in the middle grade/YAgenres then pick this one up as soon as possible.

I won this book as an ebook from Richard Denney's blog contest. Rowan is a 13 year old boy living with his grandfather, who happens to be a Caller, someone who calls the dead. Right off the bat, a girl his age shows up on his doorstep, begging for protection from two evil people who want to kidnap her for her powers. She's an Immortalist, the last of her kind, a person who lives a hundred years longer than a regular human. But if someone were to kill an Immortalist and drink her blood, they would become Immortal and live forever. Rowan and his grandfather promise to protect her, and they'll face any evil person or thing to do it. A fun, short read. Boy oh boy, this book has every magical creature all packed into one story! There are wizards, zombies, fairies, callers of the dead, ghosts, snow monsters, even Hobgoblins. I especially liked Rowan, who was sweet and kind and didn't take crap from anybody. The thing I didn't like was that it ended so abruptly! And now I have to wait until September to find out what happens! Thanks Mr. Denney, for my free ebook copy of the book.

I couldn't help being reminded of Les Misérables when the barefoot girl shows up late at night with the man, and I liked it. I felt the beginnings of a classic here, great things to come from this book. Can't wait to read #2.

Such a quick and fun novel with unique elements and a story that's never been done before. The best middle-grade novel I've ever read!

*3.5/5 Stars - A nice final book to end 2011!I haven't read middle grade for well over a year now I guess. Around the time I finished The Hunger Games Trilogy (before I even knew it was a popular series, let alone part of this enormous book community!), I find myself unable to immerse myself back in the middle grade genre. Becuase of how serious The Hunger Games was, I wanted something darker, something that was truly fantastic that could blow my mind away - so I eventually moved on to young adult, starting with Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick, and Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. Anyway, back to this book. It was light and fun, just like his other book Hillserpent Academy, but still had a sort of dark atmosphere to it, which I liked, and wish all middle grade fiction had. However, the length of the book kind of dulled some aspects of the book that could've been a bit sharper. The characters, Rowan, Ever, the grandfather, Pike, and Stitch were in for such a short amount of time that I found it hard to connect to them at first, because of how briskly it was going. The book itself had a fair amount of action, so the reader can definitely expect some fun adventure scenes. I think the idea was original, and the ending definitely leaves you wanting more (which we will be getting since it is the first book in the Immortalist Trilogy). Also, speaking of the ending. While I did enjoy it, it does pop out of nowhere, at least a little bit. I think had there been a little bit more time to build up the tension, it would've made the ending seem to unfold at a better pace.Overall, a really great book, but the length could've been a bit more so that the reader could fully immerse themselves. Definitely can't wait for the sequel however!

Wow, let me begin by saying that it takes quite a bit to get me interested in the story of a new set of characters and creatures, but this book did it! I love the concept of what an Immortalist is and I love the magical world that it is set in. Stitches is my favorite minor role character because he seems like he could come in handy being so small, and the main characters are all too amazing to choose just one. This book has it all really, it's fast paced, adventurous, creepy at parts, and I love how the author gives you just enough detail and lets your mind do the rest. I found myself imagining details that were not even written in the book! I was just as enticed by the magic in the book as I was with Harry potter. The only thing I was disappointed with was the abrupt ending and the shortness of the book, but it was written at middle school grade level so the book size is very understandable. This is also a good thing though that I say this, it just means I wanted more because I liked it so much. I look forward to book 2!

This wasn't a bad book at all, but it is geared toward middle grade and I have a hard time getting into those books. The characters were great tho and the concept of the story was also.
