Simple, not deep. For a short story set in a larger universe, the fantasy/faerie elements were easily follow-able. The characters weren't cardboard cutouts but were not particularly nuanced, either; the love story here seems contrived & inevitable rather than organic. It doesn't particularly inspire me to read the series, although I suspect that had I read the series first, this short story might be more meaningful.I received this short story for free as part of a bonus package for backing a Kickstarter project by the publisher.

I loved this story - I thought it effectively filled in the backstory of her first novel and really developed two of the characters. I'll admit to being biased as I was lucky enough to beta-read this one.

I'm so glad to get some backstory on Story's parents. This answered a lot of questions I had after reading The Human and was a really sweet story.

Quite enjoyable. Tasty appetizer for more of the series.

Excellent glimpse into the world of Story's parents! I adored Milt, and wish we'd had more time with him. A wonderful companion piece to The Human.

I haven't read her novel yet, but as this is sort of a prequel, I'm really looking forward to the book. It was a really nice love story.
