Continuing the alternate biography of a true legend of horror, this book follows Little "Howie" Lovecraft and his ghoulish crew of friends as they deal with the boredoms and challenges of youth, from the labors of daily homework—and the misadventures of the golem created to do the work instead—to dealing with Siouxie, the new girl in class who just moved from Detroit. Using an expressive style to capture the anxieties of Lovecraft’s youthful episodes, the illustrations complement the plot that is at once humorous, macabre, and ever gothic. Each of the artistic panels are peppered with artful references to Edgar Allan Poe, Arthur Rimbaud, Herman Melville, Nick Cave, Siouxsie Sioux, and the Misfits....

Young Lovecraft volume 2 is more or less the same like volume 1, the authors didn't hold back to make fun out of H P. Lovecraft, other masters of horror and even themselves. I'm glad to see more of Lovecraft's school-life and I laughed when the little-boy Lovecraft trying to perform magical rituals in order to call down the Great Ones or The Older Gods or two. However, I do think there aren't enough Great Ones or The Older Gods or other monsters from the outer space making their appearance in the book.

Unfortunately, I couldn't read the first volume BEFORE this second one but I already knew these characters from their authors's website and because I read the third one. I laughed a lot with Count Orlock and the poets... I love those kind of jokes about literature and films. As in the third volume, you learn a bit about some famous writers (thanks for the explanations at the end!) and we can read some great quotation from artists, even we can read some songs. El joven Lovecraft 2 also has some "guest gallery" with some amazing work and some storyboards of what we have seen in this book. Again, totally recommend if you are a fan of Lovecraft and you want to spent a good time reading.

The first book had some great strips, but in the second one the joke just doesn't work anymore. The artwork is lovely again, but the stories were much better in the first book. Full review soon on www.farbeyondreality.com.
