Who hasn’t experienced a pang of lust or longing at a photo of a male model? Whether a hundred times life size on a billboard or romping through the pages of a glossy magazine in his Calvins, Tommys or Ralphs, the male model is the gold standard for masculine beauty. The characters in these stories run the gamut, from the billboard-gracing Aiden in Cynthia Hamilton’s “Big Picture,” to life models in drawing classes, to runway models, to ordinary guys immortalized in a catalog shoot in T. Hitman’s “When Gary Met Larry.” They hook up with artists, photographers, roommates and lovers, in locations from New York to Miami to a beach in Australia, and many places in between. One thing all the male models here have in common is sex appeal and a yen for man-on-man action. These aren’t the kind of guys who say, “look but don’t touch” — they want to be touched, and in all the right places! The authors here, some of the best writing in gay erotica today, have taken hold of the idea of the male model and run with it. Here’s hoping you enjoy reading these as much as Neil Plakcy enjoyed working with the authors and assembling this collection.Teen twinks, fresh-faced twenty-somethings, and the ravishing runway rogues in Model Men make for a tribute to the glory of gorgeous gay men. Model Men Reviews
This anthology was pretty good and I want to single out my favorite stories in it. There were a couple that really stood out. Reviewing for Cleis Press, will update as soon as done.ETA: This is my final review, also publised at Arketipo187.com, here http://arketipo187.com/2012/01/24/mod...The Cover: For an anthology of stories about model men, the cover had to be especially eye-catching. It is, without showing even one measly abdominal muscle. Can you feel the gorgeous guy’s eyes follow you? I can and it gives me goose bumps. The good kind…The Stories: There’s a special kind of happiness to be found gazing up at a billboard of a gorgeous man wearing only a pair of Calvin tighty whities. I’ve been known to slow down and stop walking when passing one of those promotional, life-sized photos they put up in men’s underwear sections of department stores, eyes glazed, drinking him in. Do you wonder if the “package” in the briefs is real or if it’s padded? I do. Do you wonder what kind of life those hunky guys live? Do they smell half as good as they look? Are there any tan lines under those skimpy undies? What can I say, I’m a curious cat. These stories gave me some fictional answers to satisfy my curiosity. They took me right into the lives of those men I can only look at, but never touch or know in real life. Yes, I know it’s fiction, but I don’t care. And yes, they are gay, so I’d still not get to touch. Still don’t care. I can be their best friend and designated fruit fly. Here’s a short review on the stories I liked best: •“Model Me” by Landon Dixon: Louis is transfixed as the vision of everything that is beautiful and masculine walks into his art class and disrobes, posing for three sessions. Louis draws Guy, but he also draws what he visualizes happening between himself and the model. After every session, Guy makes Louis’s dreams come true, their final sex scene truly leaving them drained of artistic expression and bodily fluids. Ah…the power of visualization!•“Those Almond Eyes” by Jay Starre: Kevin, a photographer and surfer, gets a dream assignment: to do a men’s bathing suit photo shoot with beautiful Blaze. Set in an Australian nudist beach, this story stands out not only because of the visuals described as a back drop to the photos, but also because the couple is interracial. Kevin is white but Blaze’s mother was Chinese, his father Portuguese, producing the delicate Asian features, dark hair and golden skin tone. Kevin and Blaze really heat up the page when they finally hook up, on top of a rock jutting out over the ocean, getting soaked by the large waves, silhouetted against the cerulean blue sky. Can you see the frame? Perfect! •“Big Picture” by Cynthia Hamilton: The narrator meets and hooks up with a man whose face is familiar, but can’t place where he’s seen him before. On his way to work he looks up at a huge billboard and there he is. They start seeing each other on a regular basis. Is Aiden a good bet for a long-term relationship or will he be gone just like the billboard, from one day to the next? They find out when Aiden has to travel for work. This story spoke to me, lover of romance that I am, because it has a deliciously sweet and hot morning sex scene between the characters. Lovely! •“Medical Model” by Logan Zachary: This story had the privilege of being the most unique of them all. Nate is a medical model, invited by Dr. James to his office for medical students to practice diagnostics on him. I will be recommending this particular story to an online friend who’s into medical kink, because this one has it in spades.•“Young Man’s Game” by Michael Bracken: As a young man, going by a different name, J.C. Beck had made a living as a model. Once his good looks started to go, he moved back to his family’s ranch in Texas to become a cattle man. He left that life behind with no regrets. Until the day a stranger again asked if he could take his picture. The stranger becomes a part of J.C.’s life and eventually is allowed to take the photos. Becoming the cover model for a table book, he appears once more on his former agent’s radar, but J.C. knows a good thing when he sees it. Why go back to modeling if all he could ever want is right there with him? Again, this one snagged my attention because of the romance, the luscious outdoor sex, and the older characters. Love me a couple hot, mature men having fun with no clothes on! •“Head Shots” by Neil Plakcy: Gavin is a college student, typically broke. Walking along with a couple friends, Gavin meets a photographer and agent who tells him he could make a few extra bucks by modeling. Tate is a more experienced model Gavin meets when he goes to his first shoot. They hit it off instantly and have “fun” during the photo session. The photographer noticed the chemistry between them and offers them some extra money if they stay after the shoot and are willing to be photographed while having sex. What ensues is the most shiver-inducing, sensual description of two young and energetic young men making love. Hats off to you, Mr. Plakcy. Delicious!Overall, this anthology is about fantasies becoming reality. Each author brought to life at least one scenario that anyone can imagine while looking at the exquisite men in advertising pictures and magazine covers. Each story allows us to feel that the dream can come true. Enjoy!
