City of Chaos Reviews
I believe this is the second Ray Crusafi Mystery, but the first one I have read.I would like to read the first and learn more about Ray.Ray Crusafi is driving across to wear his wife has been staying with family. He is nervous about telling his wife about his past and how she will handle it. He pulls off into a little town of Eris to get something to eat at the grocery store. But he walks into the store being robbed and gunman shooting up the store. The grocery store owner seeing that he was P.I. hired him to find out who was doing this to drive him out of business. He thinks it is the Mayor.Thier are many suspects that Ray finds. His wife meets him i n town to find out what Ray has to say.Ray finds himself in a lot of trouble and keeps getting hurt. It is nonstop action as Ray tries to find the bad guys who want the grocery store to go out of business. It kept me guessing the whole time. The story was given to me from Libarything in exchange of honest review.PNC Publishing 09/10/2011 PUB
Ray is one of those characters who carry a book. Reading about him makes me want more, more, more of him. He's a tough guy with some serious quirks who I wish the author would develop more. Ray has a lot of potential to be one of the great tough guys in literature. If only he used his brass knuckles a little more!Pennington writes a tight story that puts Crusafi in the middle of an unexpected situation in rural Missouri and brings it to conclusion with a dramatic ending that makes the reader ready for the next installment. The author's writing style is easy to read and with plenty of engaging dialogue. At times, I questioned the Ray's judgment as a private investigator and wondered about his motives and decisions. Who knows, I'm not a P.I., so Ray might be more in the know. The storyline moves at a steady pace that kept me engaged, but at times I would have liked to see more character development. More complex villains would give the story more depth. It's worth the read. Once you get hooked on Ray, you'll be ready to dive into the series.
I very much enjoyed CITY OF CHAOS though I will admit feeling sorry for Ray for awhile. It seemed as though the only breaks that he could get were bad ones. Not only is his wife kidnapped but he is beaten so many times that it is a wonder that the poor man could be alive let alone get his wife back. This really is a quick read. The pacing is so fast going from one epiphany to another, from one disaster to the next that this book is really hard to set aside until the very end. The characters are also very believable. None of them really really come across as evil which makes it hard to pinpoint the villain in the piece. I do recommend this book to readers of mysteries and thrillers. You are sure not to be disappointed.I rate this book a 3.75.**I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest and impartial review. No monies have or will exchange hands.
I was looking forward to the second Ray Crusafi mystery after reading the first and reviewing it. I was not disappointed and look forward to the further adventures of this off-beat private detective. Ray is on the way to pick up his wife after the first story of the series and falls into a new case where it looks like he will be able to pick up some easy money and be able to spend some time with his wife as he admits to her some of his past that he has kept secret. But the case gets in the way and it gets crazy. The reader will be guessing right along with Ray as to what is going and who is pulling the strings. An excellent and fun read. Hopefully Mr. Pennington will continue the series as Ray is a fun detective and the writing is excellent.
Great book, from the beginning it has you hooked.I look forward to reading other books with the main character.
