#2 in series. Madison has so many dilemmas to deal with. The new puppy, Hershey, that her partner Terry and his wife gave her for Christmas. She doesn't know anything about owning a puppy. Her on again, off again boyfriend Lawyer Blake that wants a more permanent relationship. Her parents and sister who want her to settle down and not work so hard. What does she want? Why did she answer her phone on Christmas Eve and make everyone miserable with her because crime knows no holiday? Terry, her partner is going to be a Father, and his wife is not agreeable to his working the long hours on the case. No good clues or witnesses have made hard, and yet Madison has her boss demanding an arrest immediately. I like the Madison Knight stories because they have some very funny parts along with the really bad crime scenes. Carolyn Arnold gives so much insight to what it would look like if you were watching instead of reading.

I am not sure how I feel about this series. I read book #1 and thought I would give the second one a try.It is tiresome to always have a female character that is hell bent on feeling defensive, trying to prove herself, etc. She has a male partner at work, but she sure doesn't treat him like one. She is continually mean to him, even though he tries to be nice to her.She thinks that men are always out to get her (because she had one bad relationship) and so can't have a decent relationship with someone that actually likes her.The story line was interesting. At the end, it certainly looked like the author didn't even know who her characters were. Calling Terry "the male detective".

Good Who Done it!Another good tendering of justice sought and justice gained. Ms Arnold again put together a Good team to seek out the wrong doers and bring justice to those suffering from their victimization. I liked the way she told the story and removed the evil doers. Congratulations Ms. Arnold

She did it again Loved the previous one and now I'm officially addicted to this. The characters are very well written with their good and bad. Already brought the 3rd book of the series.

It was okayI liked the beginning and then it was just too much going on in the crime. I felt like it would go on forever. The ending was boring. I hope the next book is better.

Lots to like but? I started reading this book for a couple of reasons first that it is by a Canadian crime author and second as part of my Christmas reading project. It is quite difficult, and probably rightly so, to find any really gritty Christmas themed books or stories set in the holiday season and while this one is a fairly gritty police procedural the story could have been set at any time in the winter season and is not solidly dependant on Christmas. However it is a welcome departure from all the cozy, feel good, happy ending, every one lived happily ever after fluff that is passed off as Christmas crime stories and usually consists of novellas set in the UK at some time mainly in the past. Perhaps some of my reservations about this book is because I broke one of my other rules and did not start with book 1 of the series but I started with this one because it supposedly began on Christmas Eve but having read most of the reviews of book 1 I'm not sure reading it first would have helped. I did not like Madison Knight too much and I never got any kind of a feeling as to why she acted like she does. Of course I attributed my reaction to her was because I hadn't read book 1 but from the reviews of that book I don't think that's the case. I liked Terry Grant quite a bit but the rest of cops were just hackneyed cliches as found in many books in this genre. I can't quite like Blake either and there is no way Maddy could treat Hershey the way she does. Hershey could have been quite easily developed into a good character and maybe does in subsequent books. There are very many impossibilities in the storyline such as getting DNA identities within hours when it really takes weeks to identify DNA and why did everybody go off to a cabin in Newfoundland to hunt woodland caribou when there are woodland caribou in Ontario. And it would be nice if we had some idea of what country the fictional "Stiles" is in so we could actual know if any of the police procedures were anyway near accurate. and we never did find out why people kept going to Tahiti. And why - 0 - why does Maddy keep hitting Terry? This is not a bad read by any means but I doubt I'll read any more in this series Unless I get loaners or freebies.

"An Exciting Novel From Beginning to End"I love the writing style of popular and prolific author Carolyn Arnold. Each novel is so well written and easy to read. This is the second novel in the Madison Knight series. I was drawn into it right from the beginning. Detective Knight of the Stiles PD now is standing over a bloody woman's corpse, trying to fight back the bile rising in her throat. This murder is very gruesome with blood totally surrounding the entire body of Clair Reeves, 43 years old, who lives alone. It's Christmas Eve, and there is no sign of forced entry, and it's obviously a crime of passion. The maid who found the body, Allison Minard, had told her Clair had many sexual partners and that Clair was disliked by many people, herself included. As Madison's investigation of the crime scene continues, she sends her partner, Terry Grant, home to be with his wife. Maddy is alone this holiday and wished she could have a normal life of loved ones around her. After the body is removed, a white feather lays on the floor, without any blood on it. It just might be an important clue. But as Madison and Terry scramble to solve this crime, Maddy also has to resolve her romantic issues of her personal life. It's like she's carrying a double backpack on her shoulders. Outstanding plot, unique twists and turns, and writing style is superb. This story is very suspenseful and riveting. Highly recommend for crime and mystery fans.

It turns out that quite a few persons were involved with the murdered woman--some in business, and some romantically, or at least sexually. Madison Knight, the lead detective discovers that her partner has been charging her for Starbucks coffee-- which is free to police! Also, he and his wife have gifted her with a black Lab puppy who destroys the table which was her grandmother's. They work at the problem of the murder, and finally eliminate all but the murderer. Also, Madison finds out that the young woman she saw with her boyfriend, is actually his daughter.Merged review:Madison Knight is an interesting character who is going to recur in books. I wrote an email to the author about a number of typos and she graciously replied. It seems that there is a job for a really good proofreader for these self published authors, etc. I like murder mysteries, so this was a good choice.

Justified –Carolyn ArnoldIt’s Christmas Eve and a woman lies dead on her kitchen floor after the brutal attack. Madison Knight and her partner Terry Grant are called in to solve the case. Several suspects loom in the forefront, a jilted ex-husband, so called friends and various former business partners she screwed over in the past. As well as the investigation, Madison has some personal issues to deal with like a new four legged roommate and the question of committing to a more than causal relationship. All these factors make for a great story. A good mix of romance, suspense, and puppy love makes the story a great read. I am thoroughly enjoying the series and cannot wait for the next installment. I give this book five gold paw prints.

There's an editor credited in this book, but it's my suspicion that they were really just a proof-reader, or possibly that the author just didn't listen to any of their suggestions. This book is unbelievably bad. I've written a lot more on my blog, but I'll keep it short here:Madison Knight is a wholly unlikeable protagonist, the story is boring, the writing is terrible, and unless you're looking for a master class on how not to write a novel, there is no reason to read this book. It's bad.

The book was an enjoyable read - Enjoying to get to know the main character Madison Knight. The author is doing a good job of evolving her character and the subordinate characters. This storyline has alot of suspects and alot of open questions that leads to no clear cut person. The storyline moves along real well and transitions from mainstory line to character development are well done. This is a fun casual read but does not rank up with other type of mystery novels.I plan on continuing with series

I am officially a fanWell....... I already was before I even read this offering. I honestly consider this series like a favorite show. Every time I open my kindle it's like hitting the list on my DVR..... friendly, dependable characters in an intriguing case without an "obvious" answer. Also adding just enough "homelife" scenes to grown you closer to the characters.... I look forward to getting the next one.... Kudos

Detective "Maddy" is overdoing it sometimes in her effort to be perfect what seems a bit to much. Still it fits her personality and works perfectly with her partners one, who is in some respect "different". Love life is difficult for her because the job comes first and she can't trust any man anyway .... it is a cop thing ! The story is great and thought through to the smallest details, I especially loved the "nosebleeding". Good work ........ !

This book has a lot of unnecessary filler material that just seems to get in the way of the story line, which is a bit weak at times.Small errors such as using "stationary" instead of "stationery" and some minor inconsistencies, etc., are just plain annoying. These should have been caught in the proof-reading process. The relationship between Knight and her partner is overworked to the point of becoming rather juvenile.

I have to say that this is truly out of my genre, but because I'm twitter/facebook and goodreads friends with Carolyn I thought I would read her book to support....and boy, I am so happy that I did...Carolyn has taken you within a world that totally draws you in and captures you attention til the very end...A Must Read!!!!

**SPOILER FREE**Another great book from this author! And just as the plot thickens. The characters will keep you guessing! Where we're heading in the story is one to be reckon with.. But this detective... well... if you don't want her trailing... don't leave behind anything worth looking into! *Received for an honest review*

Whilst a good story I was very disturbed at how the puppy was left for hours alone in a crate in a 7th floor flat. A Labrador puppy would have barked continually. This would never have been allowed particularly when a detective was supposed to be a responsible person. I have to say she is the most obnoxious character

I finished this book, but just barely. I could not at any point make myself like Madison knight. I liked her partner, Terry and her best friend, although she really did not seem to have any type of relationship with either. Probably would not read any more of these books.

Detective Knight has many issues. She is very hard working and never let's up on a case, however she really has no life until she starts seeing a defence lawyer. She was hurt in an earlier relationship and find it hard to let her feelings out. I really enjoyed this book

Although I loved Ms Arnold's 1st book in this series, this one felt way too contrived and hard to finish. Detective Knight's character just got too weird and whiny for me! I was disappointed!
