I was surprised to find this novella listed on goodreads. After all it's a my little pony fan fiction, not published literature. On impulse I did a search for Fallout: Equestria, and when I found it I figured I might as well check for other fan fics. I'm a brony, so my review is obviously biased by the fact that I love the show and already know the characters. However, that's not to say that I love all MLP fan fictions. This is one of the best, and I know having read all of the classic ones. This fic made me cry hard and long like I usually don't for anything. If you're skeptical, you'll have to read it to see why its so loved. Many people don't appreciate it even among the Brony Community, though, so I can't promise anything.

Overwrought and often quite pathetic, this story is hardly anything more than a product of entertained fantasy, made much too viral by the kind of people too willing to bend over for misinformed quality.

Ummmm I don't know if it was a good thing I cried during this xDIf a fanfic makes people cry, then its a really good fanfic, right??I'm not THAT much of a My Little Pony fan any more (don't get me wrong, I still watch the episodes), but I read this a couple of years ago in my MLP-stage of my life, and I teared up badly at the end (I actually don't think it was cause I was little. If I read it again, that letter will probably still make me cry xD)I give a TON of kudos and props and whatever you can give to the author for writing this, because WOW. A lot of people don't like it, but their probably just cold-hearted fanfic-hates, or maybe just Haters in general.Of course, you have to understand a bit of My Little Pony to read this.Who new a relationship with a human dude and a filly Rainbow Dash could be this deep? ._.

4.56 average? Are you kidding me? I had to review it just to correct the injustice. If this were a jr. high narrative essay submission, I might be thrilled, but even as a bit of fanfic, this was not a well-written piece.

This was the first fanfiction I read. Actually the first fanfiction I read was Fallout: Equestria but I didn't finish that one because I was mortified. Clearly I was a brony when I read these and I tried to channel my past brony just now to give a justified rating.

My review from my blog, Studies in Storytelling. http://studiesinstorytelling.blogspot...In the story, a young man struggles through a depressingly empty life in a washed-up city, until the day he discovers an infant pegasus in a cardboard box in the street: Rainbow Dash, straight out of the TV show. Our hero is so wimpy he’s almost laughable, the plot is holey, and the writing is simplistic and grammatically unsavory. However, it's this simplicity that makes it work. The writing has the feel of a young man pouring his heart out. It is simple, honest, intimate. Yet questions remain, and many fans are skeptical. After all, the story's Rainbow Dash does not have the pushy spunk of the flawed TV show character. Why is this fanfiction piece so popular? I’m not claiming to know the cultural reasons behind it, but I’d like to unpack some of the storytelling. 4. Despite the honest tone, some lines are brilliantly manipulative. "'Oh...' The realization strikes that she has no clue what is going on, where she is, who I am, or anything else. She's beyond the word 'lost': she is misplaced.""I know the meme gets old, but I must say it: my heart exploded again."3. It makes the best of tantalizing bits of fandom. The author surprises us with the bright spots of color that wade in from the pony world, and I think maintaining this surprise - even though it’s a fanfiction - is part of its delight. These are the moments when I found myself smiling. (He says of one character, “Better yet, the rumors on the internet were true; her mane did smell like cotton candy.”)2. Also for fans - this story emphasizes two elements the show rarely utilizes: the girls' relationships with male figures, and their relationships with their parents. This is refreshing for fans. If Rainbow Dash had a strong relationship with a father figure, this would make so much sense. She's the most boyish of them all. This story maximizes that thematic gap. 1. The fifteen-year span. The writer avoids lulls by picking out only certain memoir-like episodes from the many years. If it weren't for this long time period and the father-daughter relationship that develops because of it, this story would not have its impact. It would not overcome the almost-creepy fascination the character has for the pony. What do you think? Is there even more to this minor Internet phenomenon?

About 4 years ago, I started watching a TV show on a recommendation from a friend. I instantly became obsessed. I binged on it and I kept thinking about it in my daily life. Then the same friend introduced me to some fanfiction, with which I became even more obsessed. The show and the fanfics were a fantasy in which I was immersing myself.Early on, I knew I would one day outgrow this obsession, either when the show ended or when I simply lost interest. And I kind of dreaded that day because it would be the end of a fantasy that brought so much enjoyment and happiness to me. I would look back and think "where did all that time go?"In a few months, I did end up outgrowing it (although I still enjoy the show). But it was a much more positive experience than I had expected. I attribute that to My Little Dashie, which is one of the first fanfics I read. It is an allegory of my experience with the show and the fandom. It was like one of those dreams that bring something to the surface and help us sort through a difficult problem. It is a subversion of the wish-fulfilling "human in Equestria" type of story that is so common (and so maligned) in the fandom. The narrator is depressed, he is detached from real life, and he spends his time escaping into a fantasy. The fantasy comes to life one day and becomes an actual part of his life for many years. Then it is suddenly taken away from him.Afterward, he has all these memories of a life that could have never happened and the world would be no different. He realizes that even though the fantasy has ended, he has grown, and so he decides to make the most of the rest of his life. That is what inspired me so much. It got me to stop dreading the end of a fantasy and to start looking forward to all the great things that would follow.

While I wouldn't quite go so far as to say I disliked this story, I give it a solid 2-star "meh." The problem this story has is that it's quite obvious that its main purpose is to make the reader cry by whatever means necessary, so if the reader notices this or otherwise resists the attempt there's nothing else to it and the rest of the plot becomes quite shallow and arbitrary. Frankly, I feel this story has an unwarranted prominence in the Brony fandom - there are far better heartstring-pullers out there.Rob's other listed work, Dreaming With Ponies, is much better at what this story is trying to do.

This was one of the saddest fanfics i ever read.. In a good way. I almost teared up, which means I read a very strong drama book/fanfic, or my eyes are exposed to the cold (and it's not that). 5 stars to you, good sir.P.S if you never heard of popular fanfics like Rainbow Factory or Pegasus device, or never heard of Fimfiction, you just won't understand.5 stars to you, good sir.

2 words: SUPER ADORABLE!!!Just glued my eyes to the screen reading this, and I couldn't stop the flow of tears when the ending came around with that letter in the "hoof-writing"I guess I'm just a sucker for a good sad story, but it was still very good overall. The transitions between every stage in both the father and the daughter's lives as they tackle on all the dilemmas of a broken family and growing up just weakened my heart to a soggy mush of tears.5 STARS ON THE BOARD!!
