This book blew me away. It had every inch of my attention when reading it. This author bares her soul, the good, bad, worst times in her life. She writes about tender memories about her children and the pain of how they came into the world. She writes about being a woman, marriage. My emotions were raw with this read. Only a great author can bring that out in a reader. Every book I read from this author gets better. Her poetry( you get a taste of that in this book) rocks my world, and now so does her stories. You must check her books out!
I didn't know what to expect from this book. I read it just out of pure need to read something a bit different. I doubt it will be to everyone's taste but I loved the brutal honesty in Jerome-Norrgard's writing. It's not a famous star telling you how to live your life. It's not someone trying to make themselves out to be something other than what they are. It's so ordinary that it's a brilliant portrayal of womanhood.
Reading this collection of poetry and stories did what great books are supposed to do: It took me to a different world. I have smiled, laughed, contemplated, been saddened and near tears while reading. I haven't experienced what Ms. Norrgard has, but through this book I feel as though I could be sitting quietly somewhere and listening to a close friend. The way she writes makes it easy for the reader to empathize with and understand her. She also tells it like it is, which is refreshing. This book gives me hope. I hope that I can be lucky enough to have a loving relationship like Amber's and that I will love my hypothetical kids half as much as she love hers. If you read the book you will learn just how much that is. What I appreciated most was the chance to see inside a strong, beautiful woman. If you purchase this book you'll learn a lot about Amber Norrgard, but you might also take away the urge to look more closely at yourself. It is well worth the purchase.
As a wife and mother, this collection of essays and poetry touched my heart. Amber Jerome Norrgard opens her life and her soul in this collection that is both funny and heartbreaking. She is completely honest about her struggles with infertility, medical problems, and a devastating miscarriage. While she deals with some heavy topics, 4:00 AM is also filled with humor and hope. This is the story of a woman who is a survivor. An incredibly strong woman whose love for her family keeps her going despite the tough hand life has dealt her.
As I read through this collection, many thoughts about it came to mind: insightful, honest, observant, clever, brave, sharing, helpful, revealing...just to mention a few. At the very least it was thought provoking and I could only admire the sheer honesty, and respect how the author pulls life by the bootstraps and forges ahead.
I've written in previous reviews how much I appreciate the passion and honesty with which this author writes. Her collection 4 a.m. is no exception. She is raw in her execution, without fear. You do not have to be a woman to understand her pain; you must only be human.
