Excellent personal account of the origins of the Nicaraguan revolution from one of the FSLN´s founders. Takes the reader on a journey that goes from the author´s childhood to the revolutionary triumph. The book shows little known aspects of this man´s life that reveal another face of the commander who was regarded as the strongman of the Sandinista Revolution. Must read for anyone interested in this chapter of the country´s history.

Tomás Borge believes in Sandinismo. He is loyal to his friends, his ideology, and his cause from beginning to end. That much is clear in this autobiographical account of his life leading up to the Sandinista revolution in the late 1970s. One of the founding members of the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN), Borge led a fascinating life in the jungles of Nicaragua for three decades before rising to power with the overthrow of the Somoza regime. Confronted with tropical diseases, starvation, and overall deprivation, Borge and his close friend Carlos Fonseca nevertheless continued to wage a solitary war to overthrow the Somoza dictatorship. Borge's belief in Marxism is absolute, almost religious, and no sacrifice was too large for him. This narrative is at times evocative and insightful, but a poor translation and haphazard organization cloud the quality. As with other narratives of this period, too little time is spent examining life in the 1980s, when the Sandinistas came to power. The Sandinistas were one of the few revolutionaries of the era who accomplished their objective; I would love to hear more about how they worked to translate ideals into governance.I am quickly learning that Nicaraguans are poets first and foremost; translating that into English prose is nigh impossible, and I would definitely have preferred the original Spanish version more. Still, the imagery is bright in many places and the subject material is fascinating from start to finish.Read more at http://znovels.blogspot.com/2016/02/t...
