Jackie is a woman who wishes she could just be "normal". She doesn't want to have such strong urges to poke around in cases the police have solved, but maybe not correctly. She doesn't want to feel jealous of the beautiful new cop in town that seems to be hanging around her boyfriend, Tom, a bit too much at his Kennel he runs. She also doesn't like to hear her Mother telling her son about fugitive "branches" in their family tree, when helping him with a genealogy project for school. When Jackie's kind heart to help a small terrier she sees in the snow under a dumpster leads her to find a body in that dumpster how can she just walk away, when deep down she knows it was not an accidental death like the police say? How can she dismiss a homeless woman's death as just an accident when certain things about it just don't add up? Jackie decides to go against Evan, the cop that some day will get ulcers from Jackie's meddling, and look into things on her own. She just hopes that she survives to figure it all out. With the help of her trusty retired police dog, Jake, Jackie is well on the right path to finding clues. She just has to overcome the bumps in that path along the way. With Jake by her side Jackie is sure she will find the truth...or die trying.I really enjoyed this book. It was a softer mystery, in the respect that there was not a whole bunch of murders or many sub-plots, but it worked for this book. I thought Jake being a partner to Jackie in trying to solve the cases was a great touch to the book. Nothing better in a book than a furry companion to help solve crime. It took a bit for Jake to get more involved in the book, but once he did, he made a great detective partner to Jackie. I liked how Jackie was willing to take a stand on things and go against facts that looked fool proof because her gut instinct said something different. She is a head strong lady with a persistent and very well trained ex-police dog for a furry companion. I got to a point in the book that I was sure I had it all figured out and knew who the murderer was, but then after a few chapters some kinks were thrown in to my logical thinking and I had to second guess my conclusion. Only to find out I was possibly wrong. I am not going to say this book was without action, but most of the book was more of a "cozy" type of mystery with a little bit slower approach to the murders and the plot. It was a good book, mind you, just not as fast paced or jam packed as I was previously used to in a mystery book.3/5 Stars!

Some of the dog lovers mysteries are very well written, clear plot line, good mystery and story. Others are not so good. The Maltese Puppy comes to mind. This one was excellent. Good, quick and light read and great Jake action!

Better, less quipping, fewer unrealistic dog stunts, nicer choice of romantic partner. Stories about people killing the homeless has a high squick factor for me.

Jackie Walsh and Jake Dog Lover's mystery #10. I loved this series for years, but eventually inconsistencies kept from finishing the last couple I purchased. You might give it a try.
