As a general veterinarian's handbook for the lay person, this book is helpful and I imagine I'll use it as a resource in years to come. However, as a book on training and dog behavior, McGinnis's advice is appalling and medieval (she suggests picking dogs up by the scruff of their necks and shaking them around, along with pushing their faces into the floor to "teach them a lesson" and "assert dominance").
