To Renew America Reviews
This is not the type of book I would have picked up on my own to read. But when you are in you mother-in-laws house and she states that you HAVE to read it... you sit there and read it. And no matter what you think, you tell her that it was great.I was surprised that it wasn't all that bad. As far as my political persuasion, I am neither a Republican nor a Democrat, and have the annoying ability to see both sides of most issues. I know very little about Newt other than his position and the fact that he was a Republican. This book is a fairly good breakdown of what is wrong with our country today, from the educational system, to welfare, to the "war on drugs." There is extensive coverage of the "Contract with America" that the Republicans pushed back in the Clinton years. In this book he claims that it was a success, but with it currently being 2008, I'm not sure what exactly it did for our country. As far as the politics in this book, he is very conservative, but logical. That's the thing with this book, if you brush away the political spin, this is pure slap yourself on the forehead logic "DUH!" kind of material. If anyone reads this and claims that it is brilliant, enlightening, or world changing... then they must have been hiding in a box somewhere for the last 20 years. There is nothing here that you haven't heard in your high school government class. This book would be very good reading for a high school student to spark debate and thoughtful conversation, but as far as revolutionary... there really isn't much here to cling to. Thank you for pointing out the problems Newt, we already know them... now will someone come up with some solutions!
OK, so this is a bit dated, but it bears re-reading. And I know that Gingrich has been much maligned since writing this--his not so pretty image tainted--but it is a real landmark in understanding who this important political figure was. And even if he's not in power any more, one needs to look at who he was, why he achieved the level of influence he did, and whether or not we should let someone of his ilk achieve such height again. Isn't all political reading of such a nature? But I like Newt (with a name like that, what's not to like). Even before I went to the dark side (yes, I'm now Republican, but after 8 years of Bush I may receded from political leaning all together), I liked the fact that he was an academic, a history teacher even. Hey, with that in mind, he can't be all bad, can he?
I admired Newt Gingrich for years before I found this book. I think that "To Renew America" gives so many great ideas about how this country can be turned around. This book is OLD but yet if these ideas were up-dated and implemented today, we could see great changes in our country. Mr. Gingrich has so many marvelous insights into education, taxation, the economy, the environment and many more areas of our government that need (in many cases) fundamentally changed. Mr. Trump could get a lot of help from this book...and perhaps he has.
I purchased this at a book signing when it was new. For whatever reason did not get around to reading it until now. It is a bit dated but almost all of it rings true today. I just wish I had taken the time to read this at the time it was published. Sit worth a read today!
Good book. A bit dated, especially when dealing with technology. The content was mostly expected coming from Newt. He has some excellent ideas on taxation and education. Surprisingly, Newt is very much an environmentalist, and his ideas are fair.
Good book. Too bad the GOP Congress quickly moved away from the principles of the 1994 revolution that brought many of them to power.
Read it because my favorite HS history teacher made it an assignment. Enough said.
Ideas to restore America's traditional Conservative values.
I tried to read this to understand where the ultra-right wingers are coming from, but I couldn't make it through the first chapter.
