** RE-READ 12/2/2014 **I decided to re-read this story in preparation for reading In Too Deep; thought I would re-familiarize myself with the characters. Only to realize that, I think I loved it more now than 2 years ago... Maybe because there was an "Aha" moment when I remembered the secret that Cade was keeping from Aiden. Maybe because I felt proud when Aiden stepped up to protect his boyfriend. Maybe because I felt more sympathetic towards Cade now (and would love to immediately read his story in the novel version) and the burden of keeping his secret from his boyfriend. So, in a very rare case of me actually upping the rating star, I decided to give this one 3.75 stars rounded up. Can't say solid 4* yet because I still thought the ending was WAY too abrupt.----------------------------- Original review July 2012 3.5 starsThis short story has a darker subject that I don't see coming -- and the secret that Cade has been keeping from Aiden breaks my heart. I really wish that Ms. Sherwood explores more of the aftermath because the story ends rather abruptly. There are so many things that I would like to know more after Aiden finds out everything. I guess I will be part of the people in the original thread of this story demanding for a sequel.

Well I honestly didn't expect that! I honestly thought it was just going to be a lightweight " shy boy meets the family and is slightly out of his depth " plot with a touch of angst thrown in but that was so much more than that. The underlying tones here are much darker, and the bad guy of the piece is suitably creepy and deserved of forms of retribution that normally I wouldn't wish on anyone. I was drawn into Cades dilemma from the word go and on pins as to how it would all play out. Like Cade in one part of the story... i was hooked! In three words - I loved it. Another hug to Lolita for putting me in the path of this super free short. Its stories like this that makes me realise how lucky we are in this genre to be given such quality free stories ( however short they are ) that are just as satisfying and classily written as the books we pay forandgiven to us by top authors in the field. So thanks for that. Part of the Love Is Always Write series of books and collected anthologies, if you really wanted to you, by checking out other free series like Don't Read In The Closet and this years Love Has No Boundaries collection, You could fill your e reader to bursting with hundreds of free stories and never have to buy another book again! How fabulous is that.. Except there's also so many fantastic m/m and LGBTQ pay for books out there, that the temptation is too much. * SIGH * I love this genre. :D

10/10, perfect, amazing! I LOVED this book.Cade and Aiden are both in a prestigious Uni/College, they are boyfriends and sincerely love each other, but they couldn't be more different:-The family background: Cade comes from a poor family with irresponsible parents, while Aiden comes from a rich family with loving parents.-The personality: Cade is a very bright and a very serious scholarship student, a real all-work-and-no-play kind of guy. He is also quiet and on the shy side. It's clear he doesn't want to be like his parents. Aiden is his total opposite. He is at university to have fun. He likes to party, he is confident and outgoing. He does not worry about his future. -The past: Cade has done a few things in the past to survive he is not proud of, and it is a heavy secret to carry. Aiden is a golden child who has always been protected from the ugliness of life. The plot: During a one-week family reunion at Aiden parents' cottage, Cade is introduced to the whole LARGE family. Tensions arise and some secrets threaten to come out that could break Cade and Aiden's relationship. The way Cade chooses to deal with the situation is mind-blowing, more so because it is out of character for such a shy and private young man. Aiden also surprised me. Clearly beyond the carefree surface, there is a man with hidden depths. This young love is strong and healthy. Excellent read.

4.5 stars because the way the secret was revealed to the reader annoyed me and was dragged out too slowly. Also the subject of Will was mentioned a lot without any background information so it felt like the reader was in the dark there. He even tells Cade "you know why I broke up with Will" but they never tell the reader Also Cade was sometimes written as Cole. Which confused me a little. Other than that it was a really well written short story. I liked both of the guys and warmed up to the crazy family. Although the story had its dark moments they never felt out of proportion or unbelievable. It kept me up since I had to finish it. Bed time now

An amazing read - wonderfully emotional and suspenseful. It's really hard to pack such a punch in a story this short, but Kate Sherwood gets full marks and my total respect. It was incredible to see the emotion in every word the characters spoke and in every gesture they made, and I loved the way the plot unfolded.I won't say more because I don't want to spoil the plot, but I can wholeheartedly recommend this story to anyone.I'm left completely in love with this couple and surrounded by a warm pink haze of perfect romance... Can't wait to read more by this author.Goddamn, I really am turning into a complete sap.

This is a freebie from the Love is Always Write event in 2012 and features Cade and Aiden, who are already a couple and are travelling to Aiden's parents lodge in Canada for a short break with the rest of Aiden's family. 4 stars and , I really liked it.Of course, there is a much darker element in the story, which I won't go into spoilers, but let me just say that I wanted toa certain person orwould have been even better!!Great story Kate, and I wouldn't have minded an even longer version to let us know how the 2 guys met in the first place.

Thank you Kate for this story. You did it very well, very full of realisim for me.It opened up a part of my own history that is sometimes uncomfortable for me to remember. When I was 13 a 32 year old man took advantage of me. I almost froze, but part of me had secretly been wanting this for a long time. Our affair took place in his office after hours or seedy Hollywood motel rooms and sometimes at his house (wife was pregnant). GUILT, yet I was having SEX! Sometimes I look back and think it was wrong for an older man to do this and other times I think it was similar to to ancient Greece where I was being initiated by someone older. When I hear about the sex scandals, I have similar mixed emotions. The part that resonates with this story is how the long ago affair ended, I said stop, he said no and started cruising my walk home from school. He gave me expensive presents which I tried to give back. It was weird and I felt dirty and trapped-- this is the part where being so young and knowing that there was NO ONE I could talk to about this was just wrong. I kind of know how this all feels. Fortunately when I told my then boyfriend, now husband about it, he was hugely surportive. I suppose you cold call this catharthis, but it feels good to get it out in the open.Kate, again, thank you for this story and what it has allowed me to get off my chest.

I don't know why, but I'm having a hard time reviewing and expressing why I like this book so much. It has a rather simple premise, but with a sly and deliciously angsty secret slid in. The story was simply engrossing and captivating and I felt a whole range of wonderfully vivid emotions from crawling disgust to watery-eyed fuzziness. I adored the characters so very much, and their romance felt so honest and beautiful. There was only one thing that bugged me slightly, and it was the manner in which the 'Big Reveal' was executed. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and I was so forlorn and surprised when 'The End' crept up on me so suddenly. I definitely wish there was more of this and I'll be checking out other works by this author.

Wow, I really liked this one! There is a darker element to the story in Cade's history, but he and Aiden seemed so great together! I liked that the mom got her act together and I would love to have either a longer version of this story or a continuation!

Cade and Aiden are university students on vacation at Aiden's family compound -- a beautiful and exclusive enclave filled with a crowd of his relatives. The two guys are very much in love and Cade, an introvert for reasons to be discovered later in the story, steels himself to meet Aiden's curious family. After all, he is dedicated to Aiden and wants to fully be a part of his life. This is a tightly written, well-paced, atmospheric short story about how secrets can eat away at a relationship. It starts off innocently enough but bit by bit Sherwood drops pieces of the puzzle into place that alert us to more going on beneath the surface of a sunny vacation next to a lakeshore. Secrets are revealed and love is tested. Kate Sherwood is one gifted story teller and her work holds a special place on my favorites shelf. She proves here that she can write a well crafted short story with the same ease as a full blown novel. 4.5 stars because of some typos but golly-gosh I'd rather round it up than down.

For those who were looking for a longer version of Cade and Aiden's story, I finally got around to writing it, and it's coming December 1 from Dreamspinner. At first glance, Cade and Aiden hardly seem like a match made in heaven. Their worlds couldn’t be further apart. Cade is quiet, serious, and determined to succeed; Aiden's a party-loving frat boy. Cade comes from a rough home and worked hard to get the scholarships that make it possible for him to attend college; Aiden's had it all thrown in his lap by supportive, kind, and wealthy parents. Cade wants nothing to do with Aiden, but from the moment they meet, Aiden is determined to find a way to bring their different worlds together. Aiden manages to persuade Cade he’s a decent guy, and a tentative friendship becomes much more. But a trip to Aiden's family cottage puts Cade in the path of a ghost from his past, and a dark secret he never expected to face again. Cade did what he had to do to escape his dead-end life, but now he sees he didn’t leave it as far behind him as he thought.

Offered FREE from the M/M Romance Group, Love Is Always Write: Volume Five.So first off, thank you to Mrs. Sherwood for such an amazing story, and for working the story so beautifully (and accurately) around the photo. There's not much more to say. I loved Cade and my heart was breaking for him. Aiden's reaction was understandable but the way he came around in the end and the way things went down (view spoiler)[them kicking Warren's ass! (hide spoiler)] was perfect. Amazing emotional and character development for such a short story. There's definitely room for more story here though, and I hope Cade and Aiden get a continuation. Aiden needs to come to terms with a lot of stuff. Cade needs to realize he deserves to be loved. And I really want to see how Mrs. St John handles the news!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Dear Kate, I really loved this story, in fact I loved this so much that I'd like to humbly request an extended version or maybe another short so I can pop in a see how the boy's are doing. What their future together is like....and see Warren get raked over the coals in Divorce Court...Mrs. St John was just starting to redeem herself but she still has a ways to go....I would be so grateful if you would consider this request.Sincerely, Shakisha

Well that was interesting. Not at all what I thought it would be. Ms. Sherwood has certainly knocked me on my ass. What a great introduction to her work. Not an easy story to read by any means but it was told rather well, so of course I liked it. The end was a bit fast but it is a short story so I will deal with it. I would love to see a longer story with Cade and Aiden both before and after this trip/ordeal.

Kate Sherwood, she just fucking rocks. I didn't realize she had written a short story for the M/M Romance group last year, so what a pleasant surprise to stumble across it tonight. It is a delightful read about two college lovers taking a summer vacation together when an unexpected guest shows up with some secrets that could ruin their relationship. Loved it! Recommended for all M/M romance lovers!

I loved this story and the characters in it.If it become a novel I'd be more than happy.Only thing that I didn't really like was Cade saying "Just for the record, I'm not autistic or anything," when he was talking about his social awkwardness.

This was an excellent story! I really felt for Cade’s loneliness and hardship and even though I thought Aiden’s character [his family, and even the mom by the end] were too good to be true, that uninhibited and unconditional goodness was exactly what Cade needed and deserved so I was left happy. In this short story, there were many perfect moments that warranted a re-read on the spot – I pretty much loved all the moments between the MCs, but some parts that I want to highlight are (view spoiler)[ 1) When Sarah and Cade were having their “All introverts of the world: Unite!” bonding moment. 2) The private conversation between Cade and Mr. St. John, Aiden’s father, and 3) Lastly, that whole big scene at the end. From the moment Cade told Aiden the truth about his past to the confrontation with Warren, to Mrs. St. John defending the boys, until the end when you could sense that the MCs were back to a good place and Mrs. St. John accepted Cade as someone part of their life. (hide spoiler)]I adore this story even though the subject matter mentioned here is one of the most difficult topics for me to read about. (view spoiler)[ Cade may have already been 18 when he became a prostitute, but that’s still very young. Child prostitution and really any prostitution brought on by desperation are so tragic and a real life problem that is so hard to imagine. Cade’s case was even more brutal because of Warren’s sadistic needs.(hide spoiler)] We are left with a kind of HFN ending, but I will further imagine that the St. John clan will rally and make Warren’s life miserable and that Cade and Aiden will have HEA.

I loved this story. Let me emphasise that - I absolutely lurrrrved this story. First of all I hadn't read anything by this author before and so this was a great introduction. It is also a real treat to have such a well written free story and I appreciate it. I particularly loved this story because Cade, the main character, refused to be tied down or oppressed by the hardship and difficulty of his past. I liked the way he was striving to make a better life for himself and had found real love in Aiden and treasured it. The story is brilliant in the way it portrays Cade as refusing to bow down to the circumstances of his past, refusing to be cowed by polite but wounding conversation, and refusing to be intimidated and blackmailed. The way in which he finds the courage to speak the truth even though threatened with loss is excellent because he flat down refuses to be a victim. In fact he threw down in the face of challenge and came out on top. It is such a satisfying and intense short story and left me feeling that justice had been done, in fact both love and justice prevailed. If this had been a film I would have been cheering in the cinema.A brilliant story and great start to my weekend and now alas I have to come down from the amazing high this book has given me and go cook. An excellent read

What a sucker punch! Totally loved this story! I'm so sorry there isn't more to read about Cade and Aidan.(view spoiler)[What a sad past Cade had to endure before meeting Aidan. I totally sympathised with him, rowing up wth alcoholic parents, left to take care of himself at an early age, forced to resort to prostution in order to save enough for living and college. In this case, the results justified the means, though the emotional scars will forever remain. And I was sickened by Warren't behavior. I held a small hope that he might see reason but I should have known that someone getting off on causing other people shame and pain would stoop low enough to use blackmail. Aidan was also beautifully drawn. He seemed like the poster child for a kind and wealthy young man but the discovery of Cade's past was a harsh blow to him. I could really understand how it shook him to the core. But I was so glad that despite that, he came to Cade's defence and acted like the knight in shining armour. They fully deserve their happily ever after! (hide spoiler)]Such riverting characters and interesting plot in only a handful of pages. It would be wonderful if it were made into a full length novel.2nd read: 27th March 2015

This short story is part if the "Love is always write" event at the goodreads m/m group and can be read in the Anthology Volume 5.Short stories are often tricky - not enought depth, not eonough story. But not this one. I simply loved it. If you look at it superficially you'll say...well, sounds like an average story. But if you read it you fall into the emotional well of Cade - a boy who hadn't had the easygoing life his very likable boyfriend had. It's full of surpressed emotions, angst and love. It catches you right at your heart and you want to step into the story and hug the boy (at least I wanted...maybe a bit pampering, cooking, mothering...glad I can see that in the end coming for him). The built up was perfect, the characters well done....I'm seldom so enthusastic about a short story but seriously, this one had only one ended. So going to check out more from Kate Sherwood.

Cade and Aiden, a couple from very different backgrounds, spend a week at Aiden's family vacation home, when old secrets and a creepy uncle threaten to destroy it all. This story, while short, did make me ball my fist on more than one occasion, and thus succeeds in making me care about the main character. The differences between Aiden and Cade are as obvious as they are uniting, and the author did a fantastic job in giving us a glimpse of a stressful situation and a horrible secret Cade has kept for a while. I would like to read more about these two.

A nicely written tearjerker story with a little bit of suspense in it. Cade has a secret that he's been keeping from his boyfriend. We get to see how this secret begins to take hold of him and almost paralyze him to the point where it has to come out so that he can keep moving on with his life. I did like this as a short story and wouldn't mind reading about the continuation of Cade's journey.

I love Kate Sherwood and she didn't let me down. I love this book. I wanted it to go on. When I got to the end I was disappointed that it was the end. I know how Cade felt as I've been in his shoes. I didn't have the past he did, but I definitely know about feelings of inadequacy and being in love with what appears to be the perfect guy who loves you unconditionally.
