But on the threshold of adulthood, there’s one thing he still can't quite process or dismiss: a stranger's subtle, unwitting betrayal that occurred three years ago, following his freshman year in high school. A month before Road crosses the country to attend Georgetown University, he lights out for Alaska with his best friend, a zesty redheaded lass named Kyna Tiege. Hey, what would you expect from a guy named after a Kerouac book? Turns out, though, that the unresolved past is not confined to the lower forty-eight: Road has developed a major problem, which KT discovers before he’s even aware of it. That’s because his problem is a peculiarly cruel brand of amnesia: he blacks out during exactly those moments a seventeen-year-old should treasure for life. At Georgetown, Doughty not only has to play catch-up intellectually. Having come from a small high school in Oregon to a campus in Washington, DC teeming with smart and beautiful women, he’s way out of his depth socially. The traits that serve him best – his energy, outspokenness, and candid faith – make him a target, and soon he’s drawn into a shadowy conservative political group that calls itself The Institute. At the same time, he hooks up with a soft-eyed, sharp-tongued classmate, a devoted Progressive brunette in torn corduroys named Lesleigh Marie. The two hit it off from go. One problem. Her father – a political fixer with a buried past and secret aspirations of his own – likes the unreconstructed Road as a future candidate on the republican ticket, but surely not as a candidate for his daughter’s affections. Uncompromising by nurture, Road both dreads and refuses to believe the inevitable: that it’s just a matter of time until Lesleigh pulls away. As Doughty struggles through his classes and grapples with his faith, politics, and erotic amnesia, he finds himself implicated in a scheme that threatens to get him kicked out of school and roped into a criminal investigation. Narrated in the first person, with equal parts homage to the headlong prose of Jack Kerouac and the life of John Donne, THE ECSTASY is a rangy, passionate, challenging novel of ideas and love, freedom and fate, poetry and sex, which celebrates the upstart in all of us....
