When Sunday and John Reed purchased Heide, now the site of the Heide Museum of Modern Art, it was a neglected former dairy farm. At the end of their lives, it was unique among Melbourne’s parklands, densely forested with exotic and native flora and a stunningly beautiful cottage-style kitchen garden as the jewel in its crown. The transformation is an extraordinary aesthetic accomplishment, the result of 50 years of vision, dedication, and sheer hard work. Exploring Heide’s history, this book demonstrates how the Reeds molded it into a personal Eden, connecting art with nature and creating a nourishing environment for the artists they championed—Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker, Joy Hester, Charles Blackman, and Mirka Mora among them....

I had never heard of this famous Melbourne public garden before picking up this book, but am now inspired to visit, and to read more about the eccentric and interesting couple who created it over the twentieth century...they seem like Melbourne's Bloomsbury Group, with Sunday at the centre of it all and the garden, Heide, the home of much artistic development and interpersonal dramas. This is a beautifully illustrated book...the narrative draws the reader in and is a good starting point for reading about this interesting place and its people and certainly inspired me to seek the more comprehensive tomes on the subject.

Finally I have finished this book after it sitting on my shelf for quite some time. You have to be really interested in heide and in gardening for this to be worthwhile. I am not much of a gardener! I just kind of raced through this book. Okay if you are interested in Heide's garden development.
