They sniped and circled each other warily all the time. Now on Christmas Eve when the Diamond Saloon is closed and Pearl is alone for the holiday who should come knocking at the door with a blizzard on his tail, but Garrett the man who constantly gets under her skin. What dust does he want to kick up now? This is the follow up short story to 'Rough Diamond' and tells the story of two side characters from that story, Pearl and Garrett. Those two caught my attention when I was reading Alice's story so I was eager when I saw that they were getting a story of their own. 'Fool's Gold' really has to be read in order because much of the backdrop, backstory and character development take place in 'Rough Diamond'.While I was eager to read this one and enjoyed much of it including the startling reveal about Garrett and the relationship between Pearl and Garrett, there were a couple of things that niggled at me. Not that these were horrid things really and maybe they are things that others won't even care about. First of all, the 'dumbed down' dialogue didn't ring true for me. Now don't get me wrong, I love westerns and country stories so I don't mind the easy speech that was/is the norm just as regional dialects are a thing of fascination for me and not an annoyance. I just felt like the characters' speech in this one was forced because it was making a point rather than natural. The second thing was that I missed the development of the story that the first book had going for it. Not to say this one was bad and had no plot, but these were such good characters that I wanted more- more than a vignette and a brief epilogue- to help me connect to the characters and their story. They had that awareness of attraction and feelings though Pearl misunderstood what it was and they that thing with Garrett's family which would have made a great external conflict for them to deal with. Because this was a short story, the characters came together quickly and the other issue wasn't much of anything. In truth, I guess I am offering a backhanded compliment to how much I like the author's characters and plot idea and wanted them to really have their chance to shine in a broader scope that a higher page count would have brought. Now all that being said, there was still good stuff going on. I loved that I got to witness this moment when these two realized what all the animosity and tension had been about. I loved what happened when they dove right in and did something about it- passionately too. They are two lonely people with pasts they are trying and successfully leaving behind. I loved the sweet little Christmas tree scene that really gave such insight into who Pearl really is under the persona she created and I loved that adorable ending in the epilogue when Ethan comes to Pearl with his gift made me feel the same as when I bite into my most favorite decadent chocolate- so satisfied. This is a book that I can only recommend to those who read the first book in the series. As to the series, I recommend both stories to those who enjoy light historical romance in a western setting.

3.5 RatingFool’s Gold is the second book of The Diamond series by Cassandra Dean. I confess I didn't read the first book in the series, but I don’t think it affected this story at all. I never felt like I was out of the loop or missing something important. Pearl La Monte is ready for a much needed rest. The Diamond Saloon is closed for the night, thanks to Christmas and all she wants to do is curl up in her room with a drink and enjoy the silence. And then there is a knock at the door that changes her life forever.Ethan Garrett is in a funk. He’s received a letter from his mother that shows with blinding clarity that she’ll never accept that his chosen profession is anything more than sowing wild oats. He finds himself on Christmas Eve, in a snowstorm banging on the door of The Diamond Saloon trying to convince Pearl to let him in. He’s always rubbed Pearl the wrong way and enjoyed doing so. It’s always been fun to get her so riled up. The writing was very well done and the characters played off one another well. I found Ethan very sweet and entertaining. I wasn't so sure about Pearl, however. I understand she had issues with the wealthier class because of her past, but it just didn't mesh well with what her chosen path in life is. Of course, had the book been longer more of her character might have been revealed and I may have understood it a bit more. I would recommend this book if you are looking for a quick, sweet read that you can finish in an afternoon. A special thank you to Cassandra Dean for the loan of this book in exchange for my honest review. You can find this review and others at http://tinar1121.blogspot.com and http://riverinaromantics.blogspot.com

It's Christmas Eve, 1879, and the Diamond Saloon is empty. The staff has gone to spend the holidays away and Pearl la Monte has a hankering to retire early. A pounding at the Diamond’s door rids her of such a fool notion. Her irritation rises when she sees the super polite-like Garrett standing outside.Ethan Garrett has a powerful need to gain comfort. When the saloon’s voluptuous redheaded singer scowls at him from the threshold of the Diamond, he doesn't stop to think about why his ire at her has disappeared. Or how he just wants to spend some time in her company. When a blizzard storms in, trapping them, will they spend their time arguing or find their irritation for each other disguises something more? This isn't my typical type of book to read, but I really enjoyed the story. It's a super quick read. The characters are likable & you find yourself cheering them on. I haven't read the 1st in the Diamond Series but I don't feel like I was lost by not having read it first. The author clearly tells you who the characters are & how they're connected. This was well worth the read.

Ethan Garrett and Pearl la Monte don't get along. She thinks that he looks down on her and he thinks she's amazing in her flirtatious comebacks. The truth is that neither can stop thinking about the other when they're alone. When Ethan shows up at Diamond's door Pearl is not a happy woman. He talks her into letting him in and when she learns some some information about him that she finds disturbing she tries to kick him out. The blizzard, however, has rolled in faster than they thought it would and they find themselves stuck together in the Diamond.Pearl tries to give Ethan the silent treatment but when push comes to shove and Ethan makes his move for comfort Pearl is more than happy to provide it.This is very short but cute book. The characters were written well and we definitely got more information about each than I thought we would when I first started. There isn't much of a romance that we're shown – more that we're told – but that ended being just fine. Ethan and Pearl were cute together and it was a nice peek into their lives.Rating: 3 out of 5 This review was originally posted on Book Binge by Tracy.

Title:Fools GoldThe Diamond series book 10A western escapeAuthor: Cassandra Dean Miss Pearl la Monte loved to perform on stage and run her saloon the Diamond. It was Christmas Eve and all her girls and employees were gone for the holidays and with the big blizzard coming in, she was glad for the time alone. Well that is until Ethan Garrett came to the saloon. Garrett was troubled and he needed someone to talk to. A reluctant Pearl agreed to listen to his problems. In doing so Garrett ended up stuck at the saloon because of the blizzard. This book was amazing it took me out west in the 1800's and I couldn't put it down. Pearl and Garrett finally after four years realizing they needed each other was so sweet and the love scene were hot!!!!! I give this book five stars. Fool's Gold was such a sweet read! Pearl is now running the Diamond while Alice is in France doing her show. All is quiet Christmas when a knock on the door brings one of the last people Pearl wanted to see; Ethan. All Ethan asks for is some company and an ear to listen to his problems and Pearl reluctantly listens. When the weather takes a turn for the worse, emotions run high and the unimaginable happens!Cassandra yet again kept me well entertained with Fool's Gold. Having the supporting characters from Rough Diamond the focus in the book was a great move. I'm hoping that there will be a book 3 to this series and I can't wait to see who will be the headliners.

Ethan and Pearl seem to have a love/hate relationship. They can't stop thinking about each other yet they tend to get on each other's nerves. Someone told me once that love is an emotion that is very close to hate - this is what they have. They end up in a situation where they are stuck together due to a blizzard. I found myself wanting them to get together and become a couple. This is a very short novella but a worthwhile read. I don't normally read "western" style books and I am glad I chose to read this one. This is book 2 in the Diamond Series. I have not read book 1.I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The story of Pearl and Ethan's interlude in the saloon was inferred to be long overdue. The Blizzard not only captures them physically, but emotionally as well. Facing each others' history together allows them to bond and grow. Accepting that each has what they finally want...they succumb to their sexual desire fore each other .... and continue to be...... I enjoyed this book very much, It ended very quicklySee more reviews at welovekink (dot) com*this book was provided free by the author for an honest review*

Fool's Gold is a novella that deals with Pearl and Ethan who show up on Rough Diamond. Because it is a novella, it's a really quick read. I liked the two of them together but I wish they had gotten a longer story. In the previous book, they are never together. The reader just gets the sense that there is something there between them. I would have liked to see more of them together. Despite that, it is a steamy short story with two likeable characters. It's definitely a great follow-up to Rough Diamond.

Cassandra's "Fool's Gold" is a nice, sexy historical romance, but I do wish it had more back story behind the plot. Cassandra's characters had great chemistry and heated up the pages. Don't get me wrong, it was a good read, it's just me that wanted more. This review is based on a complimentary copy from the author which was provided for an honest review.
