Another little gem from someone who I'm beginning to regard as the queen of short fiction, Australian author Jenny Schwartz. Like her earlier novelette, DRAWING CLOSER, the newly released MISTAKEN ENGAGEMENT is a power packed read, an emotional, romantic story which will give you all the satisfaction of a romance novel in a smaller package. In today's activity filled lifestyle, it's nice to think that you can still get a satisfying read in a more compact package. As my late, beloved grandmother used to say, "good goods come in small packages."This is Saul and Grace's story. As they are step cousins, Saul has been in love with Grace ever since she joined his family after her mother married Saul's uncle. Seeing Grace a little hurt and humiliate when the man she likes chooses her more glamorous step sister over her, Saul charges to the rescue by announcing their 'engagement.' Grace is not impressed. According to her, the engagement is so not happening. Saul fixes it for Grace to come away for the long Australia Day weekend. With the help of a few fireworks and a blazing summer fire, it won't be long before this pair are also creating a few fireworks of their own. Well, this is what Saul is hoping for, but can it really happen? Read on and find out. This read is highly recommended especially for romance readers who are looking for a short yet satisfying read.

Mistaken Engagement is short and sweet story by Australian romance author, Jenny Schwartz. Though I haven’t read Drawing Closer (released in December 2012) of which Mistaken Engagement follows on from I had no difficulties in getting into this story.Mistaken Engagement is set over the Australia Day long weekend which I think was a really great idea as it set the scene in both country and season. I knew I’d be in for a great summer read!Grace Nguyen is a doctor who works hard and has managed to avoid her family over the Christmas and New Year period following a family event that lead to Grace’s humiliation. Saul Wharton (her step-sister’s cousin) tried to save her downfall by claiming a fake engagement which just embarrassed her further-hence the avoidance. When Saul turns up on her doorstep prior to the long-weekend proposing they spend the weekend at their family beach house to prove to the family she isn’t broken-hearted and that they remain friends. Grace reluctantly agrees and decides to take the opportunity to prove to Saul she’s not a conservative workaholic but in fact a sexy package of femininity. With a new wardrobe characterised by short summer dresses and tiny shorts, she certainly gets his attention.Grace had a crush on Saul as a teenager; he was six years her senior but made her feel part of her new extended family when her mother remarried. Saul has always had a soft-spot for Grace but being the wealthy, handsome man he is he’s always been too interested in flimsy relationships and making money. Now he’s getting older and what he wants out of life is stability and a family. As they spend more time together he begins to wonder whether she could be the one.At around 10,000 words, this short story can be read in one sitting- I read it in my lunch break. Because of the history between Grace and Saul the hasty relationship development was quite believable and Schwartz has managed to jam-pack a lot into this short story-there’s not just the sexual chemistry and gentle teasing between the couple but the immediacy of their situation is amplified against the backdrop of an impending bushfire. At the risk of losing each other, both Grace and Saul discover the depth of their feelings for each other, and of course there’s a very satisfactory happily ever after- this is a romance after all. This is the first of Schwartz’s work that I’ve read but it certainly won’t be the last. A highly enjoyable read, Mistaken Engagement is a fantastic January read and in particular, Australians will appreciate the Aus Day theme.

As a fellow reviewer put it this book was another little gem ! To me it was more like a diamond glittering in the sun. The story was one that had love and light shining through all the way through to the end.Yes it is a very short read but what a read! As short as it was it was a read that was delightful, sexy, fun, exciting and powerfully passionate! The plot was one where Saul our hero has been in love with our heroine Grace for as long as he can remember and when she finds herself in a bind he is right there to rescue her by announcing "their engagement". Yes, the man actually uses a very clever and crafty idea to get the woman of his dreams into his bed and his arms, where she belongs. The author gave me everything I wanted and the whole plot was simply delicious. I loved that the author can pack so much emotion into such a short read. I am not a major fan of the short ones as it always seems like the longer reads give me a better insight and understanding into the lives of the characters. And most of the time I really do feel as reader I was deprived of some valuable piece of information. But I can with all honestly say this author does the opposite, she delivers on each and every page. I was captivated and intrigued the entire read through and not once did it feel like the " The book is coming to a end and there needs to be more to this story" moment for me. The characters we incredibly well written and the author let each one's feelings, emotions, inner light and strength shine through. The backdrop of using Australia Day as the setting was one of perfection. It added to the whole, there are people around watching and we need to convince them this is real element, and thus gave the book that sparkle I love so much in a romance.A perfect lazy afternoon read, that is not only quick and easy but fun, flirty, sexy and sensual. Jenny, keep you the excellent work I want more!5/5 star review

I loved this little romance with an Aussi theme. Set over the Australia Day long weekend with surfing, beach cricket and sandcastles along with the occasional bushfire, the friends to lovers story is very sweet. Saul and Grace have known each other for years. When he steps in to try and save her embarrassment, it starts a chain of events that make for a fun story line with a just a touch of sizzle.Once again the eBook is loaded with sample reads from the rest of the Escape line. This could get a little boring so I hope it's just that it is a new line. Only fifty percent of the downloaded material is the purchased book. I don't mind the odd taster but equal time is a bit much. I received this as a review copy so it's no big deal but there has been some discussion around the on-line forums about the balance of extras included with e-books. I'm of the less is more variety of reader.

To me Mistaken Engagement by Jenny Schwartz was like sitting down at lunchtime and only reading the best chapters in a book! No unnecessary bog, punchy and to the point.Surfer Saul and Dr Grace grew up together as a result of their blended families which has given them a close familiarity with each other. Saul rescues Grace from an embarrassing moment at a family function which then starts the ball rolling which causes both them both to start questioning their feelings for each other.I think it’s quite a talent to be able to pack in as much emotion and adventure into six chapters as Mistaken Engagement has. I found the plot to be captivating and as well as interesting because I can relate to the location where events unfolded. The characters are fresh, the story to the point and there was no drag! The descriptions are so vivid, I was there!Another fantastic short-story bought to us by the same author as the Drawing Closer.

I am not sure I love these shorts that are proliferating of late. If poorly done, they can just feel unfinished and when well done, they are never long enough. But if anyone can do them, it's Jenny Schwartz. This was masterfully written. It takes you on a sweet, swooping ride of a romance, leaving you with the feeling of sand in your toes and sun on your skin. My only complaint was that I would have liked it to go longer!

A sweet, sensual and emotional love story. I enjoyed reading how Grace and Saul went from friends connected by the marriage of their respective parents to being a couple.

A quick, sweet love story. Saul and Grace are step cousins. Grace is in med school and wants to find lasting love. Saul has decided it is time to settle down. Grace thinks she has found the man of her dreams, Ryan and brings him into her life, where he meets her stepsister. The next time she sees Ryan, he and her sister are announcing their engagement. Saul sees how hurt Grace is and announces he and Grace are engaged. Grace flips and the family thinks they are broken up. Saul decides he must make things right with Grace and the family and gets her to agree to go the family beach houses for Australia Day weekend. This is when Grace and Saul feelings are tested with fireworks and all!!!Mistaken Engagement was very enjoyable. This was my first book form this author and I would definitely read more.

Loved this cute short story. It's perfectly short to squeeze in if you don't have a lot of time to read something longer, and it will leave you satisfied in the end. I loved that we still got to meet characters and grasp their personalities even though it's this short. Things may have moved too quickly, but the way the author set it up worked and made complete sense. This is my first time reading anything by this author, and I liked it, so I might try her other books.Just so you know, half of the book you download are actually samples of three other books.

Grace was blindsided at a family party and Saul, her childhood friend, crush, protector, and step-cousin stepped in and announced a fake engagement. Months later, the family is gathered for Australia Day and they're trying to prove that the "broken engagement" hasn't created hard feelings between them. I loved this short story. I really wish it had been longer. There's a good bit that happens and there are some unresolved issues, so maybe there is another book/story coming regarding other Thornton family members? I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

An other short story, easy reading, At first Grace was like a denied person but then she just took the desition to show everybody she was that way because she liked that way, I mean, she could be all sexy and tough but she liked to be simple Grace, the thing I didn´t like whas that Saul had to see her in mini shorts to realize he was in love... and poor Carrie, what a fiance she got...

I enjoyed this short story very much. I liked how the hero realized his love for his heroine. This is a cute quick read. I do wish it had been longer and that the after the I love yous we could have had more as well as more on Grace. I will be picking up another book by this writer!
