Tough Crowd: My Adventures as a Chastity Educator Reviews
This book, while contrary to my personal politics, has really opened my eyes. The statistical facts in this very well researched book are difficult to dispute, and the passion with which Sparrow states her case on these issues make it hard for me to simply dismiss this book. It is difficult for me to admit, as a democrat, that the condoms-only approach has been failing our children, but the statistics don't lie. Best of all, Sparrow doesn't present making the choice for chastity as the ONLY choice, and she leaves a lot of room for grace, and second chances. It is a deeply convincing book, delivered very digestibly and in an easy to read format. I've got a lot of thinking to do on these matters.
An important, well researched book that every teen, or parent of a teen should read. Exhaustively notated, and written in a modern vernacular, this book is at once very academic, and also accessible.
So far, this is the most helpful book on chastity that I've read. This book is especially meant for teens about my age (13-19) and their parents too. I suggest this book to any Christian teen who wants to have a healthy future and who really wants to save an intimate relationship for marriage. The book covers pretty much everything you, as a teen, will encounter in the dating world, and also in the media. For teens that just became a Christian, don't sweat it! This book is definitely for you--especially because it has so many cool pop culture references, as well as for the teen that has been a Christian for a long time. It reviews all the types of things one should pray about to break the strongholds of the enemy so that God can work in your life and in your school and in your family too. I would suggest this book for the new Christian, as well as the longtime Christian, parent as well as teens.
This book has all made me stop and think what am I doing, how can I change my situation? This lady took the time to do a book for children on the battlefield of the classroom. Wow, this book has so situations and media influences that kids experience. How many times have you asked why are you doing that, what made you think you could get a way with that? The lesson all too often has come from the media, and is a bad message. What are kids thinking, and why? This book is full of situations to help you and your child learn to think about what the media is telling them about their own value, and their own sexuality, and it has the stats and Scriptures to back it up. I highly recommend this book to all parents and those who are taking care of a child, its good for you to use with your teens.
As an avid reader and a Dad of 8 kids ages 0-18, I have read a ton of good parenting books, and this one is a new addition to my Top-5 list. It explains the foundational importance of chastity so clearly and also explains why there are so many troubled kids these days. This book give insights for all parents, working or not, whether your kids are 2 or 15, public-schooled or homeschooled, biological or adopted. To safeguard our kids, they need to be willing to value parental input *over* that from friends and the media, and this books explains exactly how to keep them hearing us. I bought the digital version, but I am buying the paperback now so I can read it again and also loan it to all my friends and relatives. Dynamite.
I must say this book does stand on in that it presents a radically different view of parenting than most books I've read. It holds that the most important thing for kids is a very strong relationship with their parents, and that almost all of the woes of today's kids are caused by them being peer/media oriented instead of parent oriented. The authors make a very strong case for this being so. I was convinced by the time this part of the book was over. I think it's an extremely well written and brave book, and I will be influenced by the ideas presented here very much. I want to thank the authors for presenting this view of Chastity.Definitely worth a read!
With clarity and compassion, Sparrow guides the Christian reader through the maze of the media world, explaining what precautions parents can take to decrease their children’s risk, how to equip their children with good decision making skills at the earliest possible age, and how to proceed once a commitment to chastity has been made. The book provides parents with a simple and clear understanding of the risks of sexually active teens, and the great potential for success if sex is delayed until marriage. Tough Crowd provides all the information and reassurance parents need that the battle for chastity is one worth fighting.
Here is a book that every kid who is about to start middle school or junior high school should read. Whether or not kids want to know about all the stuff in this book, they are going to face it when they get to middle school or junior high school, or even after. Better to learn it here, in an awesome book that will teach the facts about chastity with grace and sage advice, rather than to learn it from the kids at school or worse yet, the media, who will teach each other a whole lot of nonsense.I wish with all my heart I'd have a book like this handed to me when I was eleven. If you're hesitant or afraid to start talking to your kids about this stuff, or if you're a teen who has a lot of questions, pick up a copy of this book. It's like having a friend who isn't afraid to tell you the truth. This is the best place to start. With the facts.
Fascinating, well researched and very honest. Written in an everyday vernacular which makes it accessible to all. A real achievement.
