No. 6: The Manga, Volume 05 Reviews

Jesus, this volume was brutal. So much death and destruction. And the ending! Rat's been always saying that Shion was too soft, that he needed to change - but now I wonder what he'll say to what Shion did in the last scene. I don't think that Rat will like it. At all. Because as much as Rat complains, I think he actually loves Shion the way he is...

“Songs and stories never saved anybody. They can only distract you from your suffering.”This volume was good, looks like compared to the anime, the order and events of some scenes are different, but are still just as good.

Here is where we started to have some major diferences with anime. The scenes are powerfull, I love the part of Shion and Nezumi danced together, was sweet and somehow sad at the same time. The scene of the mountain bodies it's crueler here. I'm so excited to read the next one.

This volume is brutal, but extremely impactful. A warning to those who can't handle gore. This series is powerful with its storytelling. I highly recommend it.

(slightly spoilerish for this volume if you haven't read the description, and also an entirely irrelevant review but ssh)Ah, the Manhunt! Fun for the whole family! But not before we get Nezumi proving his stamina to Shion by asking him for a dance. Because that was obviously the only way to show that off, thank you, Nezumi. The mice really appreciated it too by the looks of it. (I'm once again sorry for calling him Nezumi by the way, it's too ingrained in my brain at this point. It's Rat in the translation. Which makes perfect sense, it's just that my brain does an auto-replacement.)So, yeah. The Manhunt and the Correctional Facility. This is where No. 6 shows its real face in more than just words, and though the art is relatively clean, it's still painful to read. (There's still blood, so be warned if you're easily triggered by that.) We also get small glimpses of what is happening to Safu, which no, no no no NO NOPE. I just. No. (On a translating note, it looks like Rou just became the Elder, which is basically what Rou means indeed. I was just wondering because unlike with Nezumi and Inukashi, his name is written in kanji instead of katakana. I'm gonna assume this means Sasori will indeed become Scorpion when we learn his name in the next volume. I didn't in fact learn Sasori means scorpion until I went to translate the guide, but there we go. Learning Japanese vocabulary with No. 6 one creepy word at the time!)Finally, as a bonus, we get a short story that had to be cut from the main manga to the artist's regret, in which Shion remembers cleaning the books in the underground room and finding the first aid kit from when they were twelve. (Complete with flashback with little Nezumi looking prettier than he did in the actual chapter, because these are Shion's memories so of course. I mean, likely also art evolving, but also that, let's be honest here.) There's also a couple of extra pages with Inukashi, which is always nice, and that little four-panel comic where Nezumi becomes distracted by Shion's reading to the mice and tunes in, which is quite possibly my favourite extra so yay~ (man, with all the cute side stories thrown in, you'd almost forget how horrifying the main story can get.)

This manga continues to be much more enjoyable than I expected (take note manga adaptions of other novels/anime!), making me very happy indeed.I don't remember the anime 100%, but I'm pretty sure the timeline of events is different in the manga aka things happen in a different order than they did in the anime. It doesn't bother me at all (and it's probably how it happened in the novels), because I think it still works fine. We're now at the point that seriously made me sick when I watched the anime for the first time. Seeing through Shion's eyes how No. 6 treats living human beings literally like trash to be thrown away was just so horrifying... and yet the manga somehow manages to be even worse in that regard. No wonder Shion is starting to go a bit crazy. No one could blame him for that. Or for wishing, just for a second, to go back to his old life. At this point Nezumi is literally the one thing that's keeping him sane.Nezumi himself is going back and forth between thinking that Shion is completely predictable and thinking he doesn't know him at all and likely never will.I substracted one star because while I can suspend my disbelief that No. 6 didn't bug Karan's house to hell and back after her son was branded a traitor, I really can NOT accept that there is a GIANT FREAKING HOLE LEADING TO AN UNDERGROUND CITY in the wall of the correction facility that NO ONE NOTICES. The hell?

~4/5Things are getting more intense as the series goes on.The manhunt, a horrible thing the government does to the people in the West Block, happens. And so Rat and Shion get transported somewhere new. Shion struggles with the horror of it and having to move forward, wanting to go back to how things were. But he wants to be there for Rat, and he wants to save Safu, and he promised Dogkeeper he’d be back.Shion is a sweetheart, and it’s hard seeing him struggle like this. The cliffhanger makes me really scared, both for him and for what he’s doing.I love Dogkeeper. She tries so hard to be tough, but the way she gives in for Shion’s sake is nice. I just want to know more about her. She’s separated from Rat and Shion at this point, but I hope we get to see more of her in the next volume.A lot is happening, and the main plot is moving forward at a very steady pace. Shion is learning to deal with the horrors of what No. 6 is doing, and I like that he acknowledges that he doesn’t want to get used to it, or become cynical of it. I’m looking forward to reading more.[Read more at my blog, Geeky Reading!]

I really enjoyed this volume. The opening nicely showcases Shion's worry for Rat, who collapsed last volume and Rat's discomfort at being so close to someone. It also gives us a sweet scene of Rat trying to teach Shion to dance. But the sweetness ends quickly. The military has come from #6 and they round up dozens of the people in the slum, including Rat and Shion (who want to go into the correctional facility any how) DogsKeeper escapes the sweep. Many die. Rat leads Shion on a harrowing journey inside the facility (where we assume he escaped from years ago during his first meeting with Shion).Shion struggles along the line of having to become violent. We get to see that near magical quality of Rat's singing that Dogskeeper ascribed to him.It ends with a major cliffhanger where it's not Shion in trouble for once. Can't wait to see the next volume. Very glad I found this series.

Every time I think this series can't get more hoyay, the next volume comes out and I'm proven wrong again. The storyline now that Rat and Shion have entered the Correctional Facility could easily take a turn into overdone, given things like (view spoiler)[the literal mound of corpses they have to crawl up to survive. (And you have to wonder, if this is standard procedure for the Manhunt, what do they do with the piles? Who in the Correctional Facility cleans that up? It's literally a giant pile of eventually-going-to-rot corpses [unless Rat was just saying that to egg Shion on] in a basement, this is a huge health safety issue.) (hide spoiler)] It's to Kino's credit that the art makes the scenes moving and awful instead of cheesy.Kodansha dropped the ball some on editing in this volume; there were a few grammatical errors that, iirc, haven't occurred in previous volumes. They're putting the series out on a pretty rapid schedule, though, so it's neither that surprising nor a deal-breaker.

This series continues to be a bright spot in an otherwise bleak time. This volume contains what is quite possibly my favorite line yet and also there's dancing! ❤

Di sini saya setuju sama Nezumi..."Merasa kenal Sion? Ooh, Anda belum tahu saudara-saudara! Berapa orang yang menanggapi cerita tentang pembantaian sebagai bahan renungan, bukannya sebagai bahan "oh! it's gore! blood fest! it's so cool!"...?

All the build-up has lead to this.Welcome to Hell.(view spoiler)[The scenes of the Manhunt were horrifying on their own, but only once inside the Correctional Facility did it really hit home how much worse things could get. Absolutely cone-chilling imagery. The nightmarish reality that set in: from the desperate way the prisoners tried to comfort themselves and one another, the nightmarish implications of the corpse mound, to the realization of just how wrong Rat is on an emotional level to have gone through this place and to now witness Shion falling prey to it... There's so much to digest and really mull over. All of it cringe-worthy and undeniably engrossing. (hide spoiler)]

And so The Manhunt is underway! I really enjoyed this volume because of the darkening plot (it's always been a bit morose though), and due to the fact that both Shion and Nezumi/Rat are undergoing personal changes; Shion's finally getting to where he stops running away from the death and destruction around him, while Nezumi has unknowingly let down some of his barriers. Plus there were several extra scenes at the end.

This is all that has been translated so far. And I've gotta say that although the story is more detailed and understandable, I liked the anime better. It was very very well executed. (I still have to read the novels though, everyone insists these are the very best of the 3 formats.)
