4,5 stars!I know nothing about the Chinese history, actually I'm a looser in the Chinese history. The only thing I know it is that everything that told in this short novel happened long time ago.But it is not WHAT is it about.Briefly: Two different persons and one baby came together long time ago in a foreign land.It is about HOW it was told.Beautiful...Melancholic...Smart...Shukyou...I cried, I laughed and yeah... I had a smile on my face all the time....Highly recommended.

This was my first S2B2 story and one that made an impression. It's not a romance as such, but a great love story. It has the feel of stepping into a Chinese canvas, all rich colours combined with stark fine penciled detail. I have no knowledge of Chinese history and felt I was reading a myth. Two very different men, both alone and in need:- Din is a strong character of few words, he's surviving not living; unable to keep his buisness going and care for his son. Very restrained, you often have to look to his actions to read his emotion, his grief and affection is there, but subtle. He's a complex man behind his stone face.- Gong Ji has all the personality, he brings the page alive. He has so much to offer, but has never been given the chance. Not used to trust in any sense. Here he gets to prove his worth in unexpected ways, becoming more than the ink marring his skin. Loveable, irascible rogue.- Baby Yi. A foil for both of them; sweet, innocent, unmarked by life. Everything in bringing them together.Rain falls and tensions rise, building up until explosions are inevitable and raw, painful and wonderful because of it. Gong Ji forever courting fire and Din claiming his "Pushy rooster" and finally embracing life. They're each exactly what the other needs to give them reason and means to live. There's a lot of heart here and the world is a small cottage and forge. An apt and poetic title. Together they fit and make a family. When the sun shines on the pale green leaves at the end, it's a fresh breath and a new happier continuing on. Lovely. And there's even Extra Ficlets, here:

Excellent well rounded short especially if you read the ficlets also.Although Shukyou wrote this in contemporary English I still got the feel of old China.extra ficlet here

This was a nice fic. I liked the baby, which surprised me, and the MC's were interesting. I loved watching Avatar as a kid, which made this a really interesting story for me. I'll have to look into more fics for the show since this was was so good. Then again, this is shukyou, so it was bound to be great.

Wonderful story!! I simply adored Yi. He was the link between Gong Ji and Din. It was his existence that brought forth great qualities of both men. Such an endearing story!I have no knowledge of the story behind "Avatar: The Last Airbender" so not sure how this relates to the original story of characters. I just read this as 2 strangers crossing paths and finding a way to co-exist.(view spoiler)[Which one did I adore the most? Yi, hands down. He was the most lovable baby I have ever read about, even with dirty diapers and squalling. Followed closely by Gong Ji, turned from thief to caring father. Then comes Din, silent but with a strong resolve. (hide spoiler)]Magical story, as expected from Shukyou.

I really love this story, and have since the first time I read it years ago. I love the development of the story, and the pacing of the relationship. I love seeing the bond between Gong Ji, and Yi, and how much the unconditional love that Yi had for Gong Ji changes him for the better. I also love how Gong Ji is able to bring Yi and Din together. It's not about one man fixing another, it's about two men learning to open their hearts, and build a family together. A really beautiful, simple story.

If you only ever read one DILF/manny story, let it be this one.

3,9999 starsThis is a fairly short story set in pre-industrial China (?) about Gong Ji, a wannabe goat thief and ex-con who turns babysitter. If I hadn't know that this was supposed to be m/m, you could have fooled me for 2/3 of the story. That's how long it took! Maybe I would have enjoyed the story a bit more if I was more familiar with its origins. The author writes that:"If you like, you may picture a character who, though not in a Watanabe series, is very obviously a Watanabe character both physically and in temperament; you may also imagine my making a joke about how this character is obviously the son of Mugen and Spike Spiegel. Then, as that character talks dramatically about how the Evil Empire destroyed his village and killed his family, you can imagine my saying aloud, 'Oh, no, [character]'s two gay dads!' If you like."Still, if you like babies (Gong Ji has some very endearing moments with his charge) and an unusual setting, go for it.

This was one of the first stories I read on s2b2 and it's one of my favourites. The characterizations are heartfelt and watching Gong Ji try and and justify why he's staying a little longer each time while you see him fall for Din and Yi is wonderful.

Excellent historical fic set in China, in a non specified time (at least non specified for me). There is a child in it, but the sappiness risk is happily avoided.See also beautiful review by Meep.
