This book is a gem! A story comprehensible to children but a story for all ages. It is a New York City story. The cat is a personality, though not an actual person, and his experiences are shared by so many newcomers to the Big Apple (or any big city) – fear, confusion, dislocation, misery, and finding friendship, comfort and happiness in unexpected ways, finally feeling at home. All the characters are believable and interesting – real. Julie Salamon clearly knows her writing craft. With simple language, excellent plotting, and deep understanding of the life she portrays, the author puts us in touch with our human nature and condition in a way that leaves the reader feeling complete and happy to finish, holding this beautifully illustrated book and thinking “A gem!”

Thanks to Edelweiss and Dial Books for early access to this title. This was a cute story! It follows the adventures of a cat in New York City, and the families and friends he comes to know. Parts of it could be a bit upsetting if you have a very sensitive child (the cat runs away at one point), but the ending is sweet and everything turns out ok. This is a fun read for younger kids and tweens, maybe 9 and up. I particularly enjoyed the characterizations of the animals. The illustrations are quite good, and I enjoyed those as well.

Pretty Boy is a stray cat who finds himself sleeping on a bench in New York City. He eventually meets a friendly pack of dogs who he tags after and finds a home with a woman who never intended to have a cat. This leads to a series of adventures and even a car trip!Nothing spectacular about this title. It's a gentle read good for family reading.

So, I'm a fool for animals who speak, so this was right up my alley with cats and dogs who can talk to each other. The human characters were also endearing. But my favorite things about this book were it's size, about 4X6 and so easy to hold for little hands. The pages are so smooth and the font is dark and well spaced for easy reading. And the illustrations were amazing...appearing every 3 or so pages to keep young readers, and old, interested! I enjoyed this little tale of Pretty Boy, the white stray cat, who changes more than nine lives. Taking place in New York City, with a quick visit to Maine, this book is recommended for any cat and dog lovers out there!

What a great, satisfying story! A young cat, alone in New York City, befriends three dogs and finds a home. This is a satisfying story because it portrays situations realistically but gently. For example, in the story a young boy takes cello lessons. The lessons are difficult and he often wants to give up because he can never seem to do things adequately according to his teacher. In many stories, Eli would have some breakthrough and "get it", but he doesn't here. He just perseveres. We get the sense that he could be a wonderful player some day, but there is no guarantee. Another example is how often Pretty Boy, the cat, must find a new home for one reason or another (they are always great homes, though, no worries). I love a happy ending and we get one here, but this story shows us the real life model vs. the showroom. Excellent.

Pretty Boy is a stray cat who is found by a group of dogs and adopted by a Dee who runs a salon. Pretty Boy and the dogs have lots of adventures in New York City and he learns what family is. This is a nice story that is not really fantasy even though the animals talk to each other. It is more like a sneak peak into what animals might be thinking and communicating to others. I loved that Pretty Boy developed a love of music and helped the little boy do the same. A great animal story that I am sure kids will enjoy.

I am over 50, and I read this to a 4 year old. We both loved it....he for the adventure and lives of the animals, me for the lovely story of friendship and gladness, parting and change. It is not a silly book, it absolutely could be true (if animals could talk). That is appreciated by all ages. The illustrations are detailed and wonderful, worth pauses in the reading to pore over them.

I really enjoyed this book, which is a solid children's book, but also a rich, multi-textured book for adults as well. It truly highlights how we create homes and family, and how all of that can change over time. The drawings are also excellent and help set the mood for its terrific story.

A charming story about a savvy, vain, and independent homeless cat in the city discovers the pleasures of friendship and finds a place to call home. Lovely design and illustrations.

I enjoyed reading this book because it's not a boring book, but at the same time it's not too exciting and action-y. Pretty Boy is a great character in a great story with a great plot.
