Israel & The Palestinian Territories Reviews
this is an excellent guidebook in terms of relatively accurate information and pretty good information about places "off-the-beaten path." this book is also much more sensitive and nuanced in its approach toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict than the Let's Go version.
Helpful on my someday trip to Israel. Clear advice was visit all the other countries first, Israel last. So if you want to visit Jordan, visit Jordan before going to Israel.
I bought this for a recent trip to Israel, and tried to use this book exclusively for travel info while there, including maps, hotel advise, restaurant recommendations, and safety tips. I felt misled/letdown in all areas. Sadly, I think this is the best book of its type available to tourists/travelers. I felt like it was not well researched, and that the author hadn't actually been to the country with any amount of time or concern put into the descriptions, including major misspellings (which could have been corrected by READING the sign on the door many times). It made my travel experience more stressful because of its unreliability. And I normally love LP stuff, and use their books heavily when I travel in the US and abroad.
THis has not been updated recently, which is a huge drawback for one of the two main things that I use the guidebook for in the country--to find a place to eat that is going to work for everyone (which on our trip really consisted of finding a falafel place, a shwarma place, or a kebob place usually, so not so necessary). THe other thing is maps and these remain fairly accurate 8 years out, and Lonely Planet for Israel is as good as the other books they have for this purpose.
People mostly had this one in Israel, but several people commented on its uselessness - hours were often wrong, maps didn't have all the streets, things were out of date.
I wish I had more opportunity to use this! Hopefully I will use it again. Helped me figure out where some of the more obscure locations were
