Kudos to this father/daughter writing team, and to the illustrator, for this fun, humorous story. P.J. loves animals, so he's pretty excited when his dad announces they're taking a trip to the zoo. When P.J. finally arrives, however, he's dismayed to find the first animals they visit--the bears--are all asleep. According to the zookeeper, these bears have a reason for sleeping that is not based on natural nocturnal patterns--instead their reason is rooted in a familiar fairy tale. Soon P.J. discovers that this situation has affected the whole zoo! As P.J. and his dad go from cage to cage, they meet all sorts of snoozing animals and question various zookeepers. This story makes good use of repetition, which is often fun for young readers. They know what's coming next and can chime in. The pictures work to enhance the story, adding a whole host of unspoken elements (and a few word bubbles that made me chuckle). I really enjoyed looking at the art and young readers will find much to discover hidden amongst the sleeping animals. Enjoyable!

Hey Zoo Animals Wake Up Already!Ryan Ashley Rector and Clarence A RectorThis review is also posted on Get Kids to Read! http://www.mrtierneyslibrary.com Hey Zoo Animals Wake Up Already is the second volume in a series called Rector Tales, written by a father daughter team. This volume is about a little boy named PJ. PJ loves animals and is very excited to go to the zoo with his father. When they get to the zoo, PJ is very disappointed to find every zoo animal sleeping. When they ask the zoo keeper, they found out that Goldilocks is the reason all the animals are sleeping. The classic story Goldilocks has had many sequels/spinoffs This volume is one more in that genre. I think that kids will like this addition to the genre, it was creative that Goldilocks had made an appearance at the zoo, and the animals were all split either trying to help the bears, help Goldilocks, or simply get some sleep. I give this book three stars because I liked it and I think that children between the ages of 2 and 6 will enjoy this story.

Besides the fact that “Hey Zoo Animals! Wake up Already!” by Ryan & Clarence Rector is probably the best illustrated children’s book I have come across, it is also a fantastic story to read with your child at various levels. For instance, when I started to read the story with my cousin, he noticed the little nuances placed in the drawings, such as the elephants with a blindfold saying: “sorry, we’re closed”. And that is just one of the “hidden” nuances any parent can use to start increasing a child’s expressive and receptive vocabulary. If you child likes to read about animals and enjoys reading a beautifully illustrated humorous story, “Hey Zoo Animals! Wake up Already!” is definitely a keeper in your Kindle collection.
