The illustrations in this book are gorgeous and have an ethereal quality. However, the storyline itself will be problematic for veg*n families. The climax of the story has an old, blind hunter toss a spear at a white stag, wound the animal, and then be healed by the magical creature's blood. This may be a better story for those children old enough to recognize it as a allegory. It may also provoke some interesting conversations about the ways in which animals are depicted in fantasy and traditional tales, and whether these depictions correspond to reality.

Payton brought this home from the library and I have to say, I really love it. The illustrations are beautiful and the story kept us both entertained.
