I really enjoyed Book 1, which may have contributed to my strong dislike of this book. It was EXTREMELY over-narrated and the omniscient author intrusion into even the villains POV was extremely disconcerting. In Chapter 1, we see into the minds of 1. The hero.2. The heroine.3. Random narration that is vaguely the perspective of Villain #1.4. The heroine. 5. The hero.6. The heroine.7. The hero.8. Villain #1.9. The heroine. That's an awful lot of perspectives to burden one chapter with. And the Villain's perspective includes things like this:"His family seat was intact for the moment, though it was heavily mortgaged, but he had expensive tastes -- one of which was his wife. Her beauty pleased him and he liked to see her wearing valuables jewels and costly gowns...even though she was unresponsive to his advances. Why must she be so cold to him? He glowered at his thoughts, for he honestly could not understand what he'd done, not realizing that his habit of coming to bed the worse for drink, his coarse manners in the bedroom, and his selfish way of taking what he wanted without considering her needs had turned her from a sweet, gentle child into the cold woman whose icy stare could make him incapable of performing as a man ought."Blending his perspective with omniscient narrator is a terrible way to tell the reader what they should be thinking or feeling at this point. I'd hoped it might get better, but this odd writing blend of shifting perspectives and author intrusion continue for the duration.

Nice enough story. Surprisingly little sex in it, given the other stories in the bundle. A couple of really dastardly villains, a rather helpless and wet-eyed heroine, a gallant hero. A good read.

Amazing. I wish the evil Lord didn't die because it would have been good.
