Political Theory: An Introduction Reviews

This is a very comprehensive introduction to the core debates in the field. While it doesn't presume much prior knowledge, making it suitable to beginners in the subject, I found as someone returning after a while off that it also covers the subject matter very cogently. As you would hope for a book that posits essentially to be a textbook, I didn't detect much prejudice to any particular side in debates, and different viewpoints were given a fair presentation. For this reason, though, the content was often quite dry despite the subject matter being interesting. As a kind of meta-analysis I could suggest that the book is focused on liberalism and its critics. This framing of the debates sort of leads towards a not-stated preference for liberalism that takes into account it's criticisms. Indeed, if you used this book as the basis for formulating your political ideology, you could be forgiven for emerging as a social democrat. The implication is that Heywood's work is, by the way it structures the debates, status-quo enforcing. Now that's not necessarily a bad thing. Liberalism IS the predominant ideological position in western political theory, and you would probably sort of hope the author of an introductory textbook doesn't have an extreme ideological agenda. It's just something to be aware of. Kymlicka's introduction to political philosophy is structured by ideology rather than by argument, which probably gets around this, but may also make for less interesting reading. (Kymlicka is also a liberal, it should be said.)Overall, though, a strong introduction to the subject. Only major points deducted are for calling Nietzsche a nihilist in the first few pages... that was not a good start.

Lucid and concise. Anyone new to political theories should find this very accessible. It reviews each political school, its main ideas, pros and cons. It also tries to tackle the most fundamental problems in politics and human affairs; freedom, democracy, power and authority, rights, obligations, law, order, social justice and equality. What I really liked in the book that it cites a great number of references, books which are related to each topic.

Fantastic book -- a bit dry at times but that is almost inevitable if you consider in what an elementary way it approaches a highly theoretical subject. And does it quite well, incidentally. I have learnt a lot and look forward to digging deeper into political thought. This is a really good start if you wish to cover the basics. Highly recommended if you have patience and care about a good theoretical grounding.

Lucid, descriptive and explanative feature of this book is outstanding. It really helped me to dive into the Political Science world and aggravated my inclination to absorb enormous and voluminous understanding of the subject. The writing is absolutely for a novice and it grabs your mind with the link one can make with the present world. Must Read !

If there's a gold standard in understanding political theory, this has to be the book. Lucid flow, quotable quotes, and an almost poetic flair in explaining politics. Highly recommended.
