Desolate Terrain Reviews
I really enjoyed reading Desolate Terrain. A lot of mystery/intrigue books will give you so many clues you know right away who did it. Not so with this book. The author takes you on a twisting path. You think there is a romance with one person and it isn't so. You think it will be with another and nope. Then when you know who is certain to be the guy it turns out that he may be involved criminal activity. NOOOO! I really liked the characters of Constance, Claire and their mom. I hope that the author will revisit Stanton County and maybe make this a trilogy with a book devoted to Claire and one to their mother. This is the second book I have read by this author. She gives you enough information on the crime that you keep reading and are investigating with her. I really like the way she paints a picture with her words. As you read you can clearly see the book playing out in your head and that brings you into the story. I could see this book as a Lifetime movie. This is an excellent book for those who like to have the investigation unfold with them, who want to keep guessing at the ending and who enjoy a romance that builds. I cannot recall any adult language or truly graphic sex in the book, though there is a steamy sex scene at the end of the book (it is brief and imo not too graphic and relates to the story).
Desolate Terrain is an intriguing crime mystery that any mystery lover can enjoy. The author takes the reader on a riveting journey of uncovering the details of the case. It was hard to put the book down once I started reading it and easy to become emotionally involved in the outcome of the investigation. I truly enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys crime mysteries.
I loved this story. Full of mystery, romance and exciting happenings from beginning to end.
A Tale So Vivid You’ll Want To Read It Again!Desolate Terrain was a huge surprise for me because Mila usually writes paranormal mystery. I must admit I wasn’t sure what I was in store for as it is described as a “Western-inspired” mystery but Desolate Terrain exceeded all of my expectations. It was filled with suspense, adventure, shady characters, a bit of romance and sexy cowboys. Desolate Terrain has a modern appeal that mirrors the setting of a Western. I am a huge fan of Westerns, so I was eager to see what the story was about. I must say that reading the blurb will not prepare you for the awesomeness this book has to offer. Mila manages to carve out a tale of ultimate suspense filled with twists and turns that’s bound to keep you coming back for more. I have read some of her other books and this one has a different tone from the other books. Somehow, she managed to come from a different angle in each of her books and that’s a rare quality. Readers of Westerns, Crime Mysteries and Romance would enjoy this book.
A book worthy of Harlequin Intrigue!Even though I mentioned what I thought about the cover when I participated in the cover reveal, I will say again that I absolutely love it. Even though it is not how I pictured Constance, I think it perfectly conveys the plot of the story. As for the story, I enjoyed it. I thought it was well-written, had wonderful description, and kept me captivated during every minute. Every second of the story felt like it was happening to me. I was sucked in from the very first page. This is the genre that this author belongs in. This is her best book to date! I hope we see a sequel one day, about Constance's sister, Claire. Maybe even a third about their mother? This reader can only hope!
I was loaned this book through amazon. Charlotte is an ex military/current deputy at the sheriffs dept. She has some personal demons that haunt her but still does her job. She is currently working on the case of a young woman's dead body, when another case drops into her lap. The normally small town is about to be hit with a rash of killings, some very close to Charlotte. She will have to pull up her big girl pants and work past her own problems and work with someone, to solve the multiple murders and crimes that are accumulating. Illegal aliens, child labor, drug running, local crime, she has a lot to deal with, thankfully she has a visitor that volunteers to help as someone she loved was a victim. The two women do get into some scrapes, but click together. Charlotte, in the midst of this, finds a bit of romance with a hot, hard working, cowboy. I liked the story and I really liked the characters. The reason I gave this book 3 stars instead of more is because of two things. First, the dialogue in the book was very forced at times, things were phrased just a bit off, or information was given that really wasn't needed. Second, there wasn't really much investigating in this book, the answers just kind of fell into the lap of Charlotte. Having said that, I did enjoy the book, it's an easy read. It has action, romance and everything it completely wrapped up with no loose ends at the end of the book. My favorite quote, "A dedicated man can accomplish a lot once he has perfected the art of patience, but determination was an equal opponent."
Loved this book! It has everything in it that I love to read! Mila Ballentine brings you a well written story of mystery and country! Never thought I would see those two in one book together the way I did in this one! But the author did it and did it well! But don't get disappoint....there's romance too! This book will keep you guessing all the way to the end and have you gripped by the seat of your britches!
