☆I received a review copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!!☆#The modern day Romeo and Juliet but with a mafia family in the mix and corrupted government officials!#Love and Hate tells the story of the Pierces (=Montagues) and the Stonems (=Capulets). Both have been at odds with each other for years and with one side looking start anew and the other looking to put the other behind bars, it’s going to take a bit of love, blood, sacrifice, and violence to settle the score between these two warring families. So our young star-crossed lovers:Donovan Pierce. Son of Roman Pierce: “gangster, mob boss, and criminal” now trying to clean up his act and go on the straight and narrow. A brooder by nature, this James Dean look alike has it all: looks, wealth, and privilege….AS WELL AS, his pick of girls. But there’s something, or someone, missing from his life. What could it be?So now Claudia…Meet: Claudia Stonem. Daughter of one of New York’s top assistant U.S. attorney’s, Henry Stonem, hungry and hellbent on taking down the notorious Pierce family. This stunning beauty brunette beauty with piercing gray eyes has a heart full of gold and her life carefully planned out by her overbearing father. But what she really wants is to be free and make her own choices...even in love. Then, one fateful night, one encounter, everything changes… only, was it merely just coincidence? Had they met before? And will when tragedy strikes, family objections stand to thwart them apart, and federal conspiracies that could prove deadly… will these two forbidden lovers achieve their happily ever after? Will their families ever put aside their differences and end their petty feud? Or will their romance end up in misfortune like their predecessors?Read and you will find out!My thoughts: I was actually surprised with how much I liked this read. Albeit, it did have its issues, namely that it needed a lot of editing in the beginning chapters and last few chapters. BUT, in the end, content and flow wise it was well crafted enough to work in my favor.I really look forward to what this author will bring to the table next as now Donovan’s baby sis, Ella’s story is up next. *squeals!* Thank you Chelsea (the author) for reaching out and allowing me to be a part of your book experience! I DEFINITELY want to read Ella’s story! But, I’m kind of confused to where you’re going to go with book three. I mean, there isn’t another person in the Pierce family needing a love line since (*I won’t reveal the spoiler*). Hmmm…I wonder…

THIS definitely sounds like something I might like. Nothing better than a forbidden romance mixed up in some mob drama!!!

The beginning of the book was a little slow for me. I didnt know who was actually talking/thinking first. After a few pages, i figured out who it was. Now, with that said, i think that is the only down fall about this book.Donovan, had a hard edge but was a softy to me. He obviously had the looks to go with it. I felt really bad for him and the stuff he had to go thru. It broke my heard.Claudia, to me was someone who needed to use her back bone. Further into the story, I was extremely happy that she spoke up!! She cracked me up a few time with her best friend, Jade. This story made me laugh, cry, want to jump in the book and kick some butt! It really was a shame the things both Claudia and Donovan had to deal with. I was rooting for Donovan the entire ime, even when he punched Eric in the face! I couldnt have been happier. The pull between the characters had such a real feel to it. All they wanted to do was love each other. You could feel the sexual tension too. Speaking of sex, the scenes were hot!! Like HOT!! I loved them. I also loved Emile and Jade. The banter between the two was just downright hilarious.I think the author did a really good job on this!! I look forward to her future books!!

Donovan and ClaudiaThis is a modern day Romeo and Juliet, Henry Stonem is an Assistant United States Attorney and it's his life's mission to bring down Roman Pierce the head of an organised crime family. Henry's daughter Claudia meets Roman's son Donovan at a party one night, no names are exchanged and while the attraction is instant and overpowering neither has any idea of the others identity, disaster strikes and the young would-be lovers part with a promise but life gets in the way.Having just read 'Roman' I already knew the background but I still struggled a bit initially to get into this book but once I did, wow, I loved it, the characters, the story it had me completely hooked and I read it in one go, I just couldn't put it down. The only thing I really had an issue with was the internal monologue I found it distracting at times. So it's 'Love and Sacrifice' for me now.

I like this book. It's a fast-faced young adult tale of two lovers from families that have irreconcilable differences. Based on Romeo and Juliet, but with twists so I didn't know what was coming next. The characters were sympathetic, the conflicts engaging. An awful lot happened in the last few pages, so that was a touch confusing, but overall I found this book very good indeed. I believe we'll be hearing a lot about this author in the future.

This was a really good book. It starts a little on the slow side but don't let that discourage you. It gets explosive the further it goes. Two families torn by hate while two of their kids are finding love only to have it ripped apart by lies, betrayal, and deceit. One book you will want to read!

Love and Hate (The Pierce Family Trilogy #1) by Chelsea Ballinger. 4.5 StarsI received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Chelsea Ballinger for her generosity!!This is the story of Donovan Pierce, son of notorious mob-boss Roman Pierce, and Claudia Stonem, daughter of an Assistant US Attorney determined to bring down the Pierce Family.Donovan and Claudia see each other and immediately feel intrigue. They meet and start talking to each other...without revealing their names. It seems to be love at first meeting, but then tragedy pulls them apart. This is a modern day Romeo and Juliet style story. Star-crossed lovers from opposing families fight the odds to be together. Although anyone will see this aspect, the story is contemporary and has its own uniqueness. The story is dual POV and executed quite well. It was clear that Donovan and Claudia were their own characters. The characters were thought out and felt real (some alcohol and sexual situations are in the mix). I think this book will be enjoyed by anyone who loves YA romance with some mystery mixed in.(view spoiler)[ I enjoyed this story. It is a very sweet love story. Claudia and Donovan have a love and passion worth fighting for. I loved the twists and the fact that not everyone is what they seemed to be. I wanted to give 5 stars, but felt there were a few minor things missing for me. The best friends Jade (Claudia) and Emile (Donovan) played significant roles to the story, and I would have enjoyed a little more detail/depth on each of them. Donovan's sister, Ella, played a critical role in uncovering hidden information. She's tough and smart, I wish there was more about her. (7/18 see *Note below)Although I may be in the minority, I do wish the story had more of the mob/mafia edge to it. I think a little more danger in the middle would have nicely balanced the danger and tragedy that occurred at the beginning and end.*(NOTE ADDED 7/18: Book #2 Love and Sacrifice has more of this mob/mafia edge. It is also a love story between Ella and Tommy Dumas, a new mob character, but has more emotional struggle and grit - LOVED it!! Ella has her story!)I was slightly disappointed to see very little of the search for the murderer (I don't want to give away who dies - even though Spoiler was indicated). It's shown that Roman Pierce is searching and that he feels that Donovan should not be privy to what he has found out. Finally, the Valentine family (another mob family) is brought in at the end, but it seemed to be rushed through. Although, not critical, the Valentine facet is significant to the "why" factor nearing the conclusion. I really wish a little more time was spent so the "why" factor meant more.*(NOTE ADDED 7/18: Book #2 Love and Sacrifice tells about the Valentine family and the hate between the two families. Mickey Valentine is pure evil and he is proud of it. Revenge is coming for the Pierce family!!) (hide spoiler)]Chelsea Ballinger did an excellent job writing. She connects with the reader so the emotions are felt. The conclusion of this story is solid and satisfying. If you are leery of starting a new series, don't let the word "trilogy" keep you from reading it. The characters are gripping, so I can't wait to read Hate and Love, book #2!

Love and Hate is a modern take on the Romeo and Juliet plot. It is a multi-POV novel featuring a conflicted young man named Donovan (the son of a mob boss) and Claudia Stonem, the daughter of an assistant district attorney prosecutor. I've seen this plot re-used in thrillers, westerns, and other genre novels. The trick is to make the details your own. In the case of Love and Hate, we immediately see the opposing poles that would create hardships on our protagonists. Following the R&J arc, Donovan and Claudia fall madly in love, with Eric Anderson, the son of a New York U.S. attorney taking the role of the third wheel, Tybalt. Overall a great redo. The modernized setting, situation, and back stories give readers a different take on a familiar storyline, adding unexpected surprises that engage readers, such as Donovan and Claudia sharing a horrific history when they were eight (which I won't reveal to avoid a spoiler), thus creating an unbreakable bond between them. The school scenes are spot on for the young adult audience. The ending delivers an unexpected twist, quite different from the tragic ending of the original R&J story, another plus. Kudos to the author for doing this. My sole complaint is the storytelling, which sometimes gets bogged down with distracting internal monologues and authorial information dump. The last half of the prologue is a perfect example of this, with an omniscient narrator telling readers the good and bad side of Roman's character (Donovan's dad). These back stories told in an authorial way eventually interrupted the narrative flow. Instead of letting the information come out naturally, backgrounds are "told" rather than shown to the readers. A more nuanced approach would serve this book well. Do I recommend the book, as is? The answer is yes. Discounting the authorial intrusions, it is still a nice read with an easy narrative style. I think the YA audience will still be engaged. For this reader, there are enough unexpected twists and subplots to warrant a 3 to 3.5 star rating. With good rewrite and editing as it pertains to the narrative issues mentioned above, it can surely garner a much higher rating.

Overall I enjoyed the story. It was quick paced with characters that were easy to become invested in. The author did a nice job of creating a realistic, modern take on a Romeo and Juliet themed romance. There was only one thing that pulled me out of the story from time to time, and it's probably just a personal opinion, but it took me a while to get used to the internal monologues of the characters. They seemed to break the flow of the text. They were written to sound like the teenagers that were having them, but it felt a bit jarring at times. For example: “Well, I’ve decided to leave Dean alone if that makes you happy.”What? She did? Yes!“That’s cool.” I say nonchalant. She laughs. “Don’t act like you’re not happy!”“Okay.” I direct side eye her and smile. “I am happy.”The added inner dialogue of "What? She did? Yes!" just seems like it could have been better developed by having it be more of a narration style text instead of simply what the character was thinking written in a manner like the character would actually speak. There were also a few lines that could have been cleaned up slightly. I had to read the "I direct side eye her and smile" line a couple of times to see what the author meant.Once I got used to the style of having what would normally be explained in a narrative style of narration being explained through the characters' thoughts/inner monologues, it was easier to enjoy the story. Personally, I just find that type of narration to be a bit choppy and it pulled me out of the story on more than one occasion as there are large sections of it mixed throughout the text. But, the story itself is well worth the read and fans of similar books will likely find themselves turning the pages quickly to see what happens next.

A true modern day Romeo and Juliet story. I loved that they never gave up on their love. The author did a really good job with the ending.
