I give this two stars because it's really good, I suppose, if you are studying Folkloristics. What if, though, you are looking to learn just an introduction to the stories themselves and the cultures that birthed them? Yeah, this isn't the book for you. In fact, good luck finding that general, broad book. In Oring's text one reads about different theories and how to apply them. If you are hoping for Dundes-light you'll probably enjoy this. I've now read through many of Dundes's works, Toelken's, Shoemaker's, and a few others and Oring's is probably the best organized and least "wonkish" as far as language. The reader that you can get with it is a nice piece to have, although, again, this wouldn't be for teaching a really entry-level class to general college Lit. students.

This is a clear, well-organized overview of categories and methodologies of folklore and folk groups. Each chapter has examples in each category, providing space for application of theory, as well as an extensive list of additional resources. Reading the book made me want to look more deeply into the examples, which I suppose is the point.

I give this one star because I was forced to read this for school and I wish it had read like when I had free time rather then by force.
