Book – Steel & Ice (L & J #1)Author – Emily EckPublication Date – January 26, 2014Type – Part of SeriesGenre – Romance, New AdultRating – 4 out of 5 StarsBook provided by Author in exchange for an honest review.ReviewOK….I promise to be completely honest in my review.  When I first started this book – Instantly I could tell this was the author’s first try at writing fiction.  The sentences didn’t flow smoothly and it reminded me more of a college research paper.  The facts were there…but the heart wasn’t.I read on and thank fuck I did!! Because by about 10% in….the sentences started to tell the story and by 20-25% in I felt like I was reading a story from one of the greats!  Ms. Eck was writing from her soul and it showed in the words and in the story.  I was entranced – I was blown away by the story!  I honestly felt like I was reading a story she wrote about me….well not so much the story itself – but Elle.  Oh my….what a fucking fantastic heroine for the story.  She was all – she was everything – she was light – she was darkness – she was damaged – she was a rock.  Elle was everything embodied into a pot smoking, Applebee’s cook with a trashy sense of humor. I can recite the whole story to you because that is how deeply this story touched me.  This isn’t your “white picket fence” new adult book….this is raw – it is gritty and it is REAL!  If you grew up close to or in a metropolitan diverse city…then you will get this book.  You will be touched and you will understand the circumstances surrounding Elle.  She is a hero to all that cross her path – a very subtle hero….but worthy just the same! Some will hate this book – some will slam this book saying that it’s “trashy” and not real life – but I tell the readers who say this….walk a mile in the hood – maybe in Philly, in NY, in LA, in Chicago and this is some real shit!  Slam the book by saying who wants to read about a girl and her friends smoking joints and bowls every day?  I say to that…it’s under your noses – it’s out in the open and it’s real life – I connected – I understood all the slang – all the references to pot, “puff puff pass pass”  Elle is REAL – she isn’t irritating, she isn’t weak, she isn’t flakey – she survived the streets and has an attitude to show it.  God….if I loved girls….I would be so on her!Now let’s talk about J – what to say about J?  I loved J….he was a real man!  He was a hulking 6’5” brute but he was brought to his knees by Elle and he wasn’t too full of pride to admit it.  He loved and he loved HARD – he was perfect for Elle – knowing when she needed space and knowing when to push just a little bit more in order for her to allow the ice around her heart to melt.  His words and actions constantly made me sigh and swoon a bit.J is mysterious about his work but we do learn he is part of an MC – but that’s about all we learn in this book.My advice is to read “J Speaks” directly after this to get his POV and learn more about the mystery and why steel surrounds his heart.Re-CapElle has led a very hard life up to the point where she is now enrolled in college courses, she donates her time cooking for the underprivileged Latino teens, she works as a cook at Applebee’s and is like everyone’s “mom”.  She questions her past and how good of an influence she can be toward the kids in the program but she gives it everything she’s got.She sees J one night in a bar she frequents with her friends from Applebee’s and is immediately drawn to his olive skin and hulking figure.  A few nights later she runs into him again at her local Hip Hop club and is mesmerized by him after he gets her off on the dance floor.  She’s scared because she doesn’t get close to anyone except for her two close friends, so she runs and avoids him at all costs.  Fate has it that their paths will continue to cross until Elle is worn down and gives in to love. It’s the ending that will rip your heart out……Wrap-UpMy hats off to Ms. Eck and her quick conversion from writing research papers to writing from her heart….Don’t give up on the story in the beginning – keep reading and you will see what I mean! For more reviews, Free E-books and Giveaways

I just want to start by saying, I loved this book. I love a good Biker Romance, and while J is a biker, the book doesn't revolve around the MC. I really enjoyed Elle and J's characters. Elle had a past that is sketchy at best but she moves forward, works hard, enrolls in college and although guarded, doesn't let her past completely dictate her future. She is rough and funny. I found myself actually laughing out loud at some of her and her best friends comments and I rarely laugh out loud while reading. Now J...J is big and tough and sexy and...sweet. Can it get any better? He knows what he wants and he knows how to handle Elle to get it. I love the rough, sweet, and sexy combination in a book's leading man. I enjoyed that this book didn't linger. There weren't any parts that I found myself skipping ahead to the next dialogue because the scene is dragging on. I felt like this book had the right amount of background to let you know where the characters come from, but not so much that you are bored by chapter 3. Overall this is one that I read start to finish without stopping and I loved every minute. Yes there was a cliffhanger. Yes, this usually ticks me off, but for some reason with this one I wasn't annoyed. I recommend this book to anyone that loves a sext, sweet bad boy!

This book had me hooked from the start. It's a gritty, funny, romantic, thrilling, and overall gripping story. I love that Elle is a funny, strong, hard-working, take no nonsense type of girl who doesn't rely on others to make her happy. And then there's J. A big, bad, mysterious guy that is all kinds of hot while being incredibly caring, attentive, and romantic. Despite being such broken and flawed characters, they form this amazing connection and bring out the best in each other. Their relationship is so real and full of passion that you can't help crossing your fingers and hoping things work out for them. While some readers might not like that we don't find out everything there is to know about Elle and J from the beginning, I loved that we slowly learned details as the characters themselves did. It just sucked me into the story even more so and made me feel like I was a part of it. I absolutely cannot wait for the continuation of their story! Hard to believe this is the debut book of Emily Eck. I think she'll have a very promising future as an author!

4.5Three. The amount of tries it took for me to get past the first, like, 5, pages. Jumbled start. One that did nothing to pull me, the reader in. But I persevered, because the m/m books on my kindle wasn't doing it for me. I wanted M/F play and by God I was gonna get. So I pushed past the shitty start. I'm so glad I did. At least I was, until that MuddaFrackin' ending! The Fudge?! But yeah, the author gave me what I wanted. Delivered. Served it up. Hm hm. Case you couldn't tell, I loved it. 'Cept for that ending. But that ending, tho. Again, the fudge?

The Book:The Author:I just finished the book and my jaw has still to come up off the floor. I am so pissed right now yet so intrigued by the ending. I need to know more! My mind is so blown, I need a second to gather my thoughts! Ugh! This was definitely a great book! If you know anything about the streets or what it’s like to struggle and survive in a dangerous city, you’re definitely going to be swept up in this book like I was! Hell, I still am swept up! I hope the next book(s) give a strong character build up and understanding for all of the other characters in the book and damn it I want to know more about J. I’m so fascinated by the two main characters! The main character, Elle, has one of the sexiest personalities ever! The man that she develops the hots for easily matches up to her. One hell of a sexy couple who definitely love to explore and surrender to each other sexually! I couldn’t get enough of their sex life! I normally steer away from rebellious ‘street’ books. Growing up with all of the street business in my face makes it a sensitive area for me. This completely changes everything. I fell in love with the characters right off the bat! Elle’s bold badass yet totally soft ways and J’s mysterious ways about him. The main character (Elle)’s two best friends are a freakin’ riot! The other characters play their parts pretty well too. The writing is raw and incredibly unique. The characters are well developed. I feel like a third party in the story, watching as everyone goes about their business. After finishing up my Psychology class a little over a week ago and learning about my own behaviors and why I am so alert and aware of everyone and everything, this book definitely hit home for me. It explains the main character’s life including her past, present and future. The details give you an in depth understanding on who the main character truly is. I’m used to reading books that are completely fiction but this book went on a whole new level when it comes to realistic. I guess it’s because the narrating makes me feel like I’m having a conversation with a close friend. The writing is cool, upbeat and discusses life in a relatable now-a-days type way. If you don’t understand what the author is saying, keep reading and she better explains or creates a trend to make things all come together. At first I was a little confused on the slang but then it just became normal. I knew exactly what was being expressed later on and things that I read earlier, clicked. The story really picks up and explains J a hell of a lot more. The first sex scene completely caught me off guard! The humor all through the book was intriguing and kept me fully interested just as much as the story line. The clever aspects and different unique approaches really pulled me in even more. This author is amazing at multitasking the different characters! I noticed some people didn’t enjoy the dialogue. This book is about keeping it real. I love that part the most. I must say some of my favorite parts are the wise cracks and the Chappelle Show episode recalls. I think I laughed harder reading about them then I did when I watched them on the show. If I could claim one chapter as my favorite, it would be chapter 10. The need, the love making, the feelings, the stress. It’s all the perfect combination. Great book! I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

I was fortunate enough to read this about a month before it went live, and I can holestly say I AM HOOKED!!Elle is a refreshing heroine that does NOT need saving, She knows what she wants and goes after it. She's down to earth, hard working, sexy, funny and had this amzing cury hair that I am envious of!"Oh no honey, I'm the queen. You my dear, are the king in a woman's body" J, what can I say about him... yummm. I love a man that takes charge and yet gives a girl her space. "Ah fuck, those eyebrows are going to be the death of me."Me too Elle, me too..Starfish baby...The story flowed really well, but I have to say as an avid reader, I could tell I was going to be left wanting more. (view spoiler)[HUGE CLIFFHANGER (hide spoiler)] Can you hurry up and send me part 2 please!!!! Can't wait to see where Elle ends up!

Really good book with a mixture of suspense, romance and drama. I am in awe of Emily Eck's writing. She pulled me into the story and kept my attention throughout. Elle is a hard working college student who likes to have fun. She lived and learned from a hard life on the streets and has closef herself off to all but a select few. J is a mysterious and sexy biker that breaks doen all of the walls that Elle has built up around herself. I just couldn't believe the ending, I mean holy cliffhanger. Come on Emily, there had to be a better way!

http://ripeforreader.blogspot.com/201...My rating: 4 of 5 ⭐️Coming from a rough start, of which part was spent living on the streets, Elle has adopted a defensive attitude for every occasion. Only her two best friends know Elle deeper than the current mask she might be wearing, every one else is fitted into segregated and clearly labeled compartments, kept there for Elle's own feeling of security. And that includes the one night stands she only indulges in.... That is to say - until she bumps into a giant hottie named J, who seems intent on breaking down each and every one of her defenses.A rebellious youth lead J into the path of an MC, the same club that now, after years of growing and wisening up, was still demanding he pay his dues. It had been a long time J had wanted out, but loyalties and duty kept him bound. A life not really his own, he never considered a woman as a possible permanent fixture in his own. But then he meets Elle, and everything about her draws him, and against his better judgement he falls.....*****Can I just say DAYUM!! A very good and very different type of MC novel, with a focus more on the perifery than on the inside view. This is NOT a standalone novel, it is the beginning of Elle and J's story.....and promising to be a bumpy one!Yes, the pot-smoking, peddling and tough street-slang is not my kinda 'thang' either..... HOWEVER, that is simply the scene in which this story is set, and whether I can identify with the characters personally or not, they can speak to me..... And I have to say, Elle and J speak to me LOUDLY...... Their story is a very compelling one, with so many layers covered up by all that tough exterior - layers we have to patiently wait to see come unfolded. And if you are patient with the outwardly immature and most times obnoxious behaviour of Elle in particular, you will start to recognize that there is so much more to her than your first snap to judgement may have suggested. Perhaps age makes me a little more cognissant of rebellious behaviour when I see it, but there is something very genuine about both Elle and J that supercedes their reluctance to part with their respective secrets. Their hearts are honest, their loyalties divided, their pasts are conflicted, but their feelings are true - Still, their future is uncertain. As you will find out soon enough........My first introduction to Emily Eck and although I had to persevere a few pages to get a hold of who I had before me in terms of characters, I was immediately taken with the style of writing, which strongly appealed to me. In fact, I had a hard time putting it down. The contrast between the 'public' and the 'real' Elle so stunning, the transition so tentatively brought about by the patience of a decent man at heart, J, and described in a touching way. Oh.....and did I mention the sex scenes?? I didn't, did I..... well, they were there, in EXPLICIT detail ....and they were delicious and that's all you're gonna get out of me. Better get the book to get the down and dirty!! But here's a word of warning, if ever the term 'CLIFF-HANGER' was appropriate??? It is now!!!!✨An intriguing, gritty and real look at life in the 'grey zone'.✨**Copy provided in return for an honest review.**

4.5 stars*Copy provided by the author in exchange for my honest review for the blog tourThis is the first book in the L & J series and for a debut it was fantastic. There is a massive cliffy but wow what a cliffy! The author promises to not keep us hanging too long though.Elle has come from a struggled background, trying to live up to her parent’s exacting standards until she could stand it no more and effectively lived her life on the streets for the majority of her teen years. This saw her go through some pretty tough situations and started her early to drink and soft drugs. She’s dragged herself out of that now and although she often partakes in ‘weed’ and ‘bowls’ with her close circle of friends, she, for the most part, is now actively living a respectable life. She works at Applebees, attends classes and helps out at the local youth centre. She’s a tough cookie and is total kick ass, she’s definitely no shrinking violet – she knows what she wants and what she won’t put up with. She protects herself at all costs and with the exception of her two best friends, she doesn’t let anyone in to the REAL Elle.J is a bit of an enigma. He’s a hottie for sure and a tall one at that but we don’t quite get to find out much about him. Little snippets are given as Elle and J divulge bits of their past with each other but even with that J still remains a mystery. We know he kind of ‘works’ for the St Louis MC but not in what capacity. I love that he was mixed race and part Lakota, SEXY! He was so sweet and tender with Elle but a hard ass and scary mo-fo to everyone else. I was totally sah-wooning reading about him.I loved the gradual build-up of the story and the flip-floppity moment at Elle and J’s first interaction and subsequent get togethers. I liked that the attraction although instant was left to develop at a natural pace with some definite hotness rolled in!However, when first reading this it took me a while to get into the story as it all seemed to be about buying weed, bowls and for me it just went a little too in depth. The story really took off into riveting proportions once we hit the 15% - 20% mark. I could understand the author wanting to show the background and lifestyle of Elle was not all white picket fenced but at first did read like a documentary and a step by step of how to score weed. If that could have been ‘weeded’ out (LOL) and a generalisation given it would have had more impact for the reader to be enticed in to the main part of the story, which is Elle and J, at an earlier stage of the book.Saying all that I really enjoyed this book and amazed this was Ms Eck’s debut. With a bit more editing this could well have been a five star read for me. With the erotic and romantic parts of Elle and J plus that WTF ending it still wasn’t far off the mark. A great debut and a 4.5 star read for me. Can’t wait for the second book but in the meantime I have J Speaks (a novelette of J’s POV) to keep me going. The blog tour is at Foxlylutely today and all the details, excerpts, full review and a giveaway can be found herehttp://foxylutely.blogspot.com/2014/0...

I was gifted this book from the Author for an honest review. this is book one in the L&J series. I gave this book 5 stars. This is Elle and J's story. And what a story it is. Elle is a tough girl, no nonsense kind of girl. She has been hardened by the streets and the people on it. She works at Applebee's, parties with her friends when she can, smokes as much weed as possible and loves to drink. She is not interested in a relationship with anyone, I don't think that she even believes in love. But when she goes to a bar with her friends after work one night she sees him from across the room and she feels an instant connection to him. She fights it of course and ignores it. When they finally do meet it's because he comes up beside her a few days later at a different bar after he recognizes her. He is a mysterious man, dark and inviting and she finally gives in. His name is J and he has been watching her since the moment she walked into the first bar and he felt the connection too. He knew at that moment that his life would never be the same. He knows how to talk to Elle, he knows the things to say to her that won't make her run like she usually would with other men. But when she does run, he also knows what to do so that she won't run very far. He doesn't push her buttons and he knows how to back off. With his lifestyle and the things that he does will she stay when she finds out or will she run again? Can her walls come down? And if they do will they go back up when she discovers who J is? These two both have things that they need to work on in order to be together. But that doesn't stop them and it doesn't stop the mad chemistry that they have going on between them. He seems to calm her and center her, and she is just what he needs to keep him interested and wanting more. These two set the pages on fire! J is as real as they come, he is a man and a beautiful one at that. He had me swooning all over the place, and these two together just had me smiling the whole time and chuckling to myself. It was just ridiculous when it came to them doing the things that they do. Where they go on their first date was just awesome. I loved the way this Author wrote her story. It was like reading about a real life relationship. I grew up in Chicago and the way that she describes her life and how hard it was and the words that she uses to describe this were perfect. Elle was a hard woman, the way she converses with her friends and with J is blunt and straight forward and she is just in one word REAL. Some might not like the way the story was told and the language in which it was told, but I cannot see Elle any other way then the way she was portrayed. Mouthy, feisty and loud. Someone who thinks that she has to be tough all the time in order not to be hurt. Someone who believes that life's happiness is for everyone else, but not her. Thank you for your amazing story. I cannot wait to read the next one in the series. <3

Where to start, I went into this book expecting it to be something that it wasn’t. I thought it was going to be a mc book, quite gritty and raw. What I got was sooo much more. This book follows Elle and J as they try and navigate through life the best way they know and can.Elle likes to put up barriers and has many different faces that she shows depending on the situation that she is in. Elle is a great female lead, she may be closed off but she is loyal without fault, she loves the people that are in her life and she will do anything for them. Throughout the book we learn the many layers to her, she seems to become a totally different person with J’s help.J has the whole mysterious bad boy persona, but like Elle only shows people what he wants them to see, the only person that he seems to let through his barrier is Elle and he doesn’t seem sure as to why that is. We get to see the closed off J, who has to leave and “do business” and then we see the soft side of J that makes him really lovable. “I know it does. I told you I would never hurt you and I meant it. I feel like I’ve waited my whole life for you, and I didn’t even know I was waiting. Since I saw you in Checks that first night, you’ve had me. I’m yours. You can break me, Elle.”Throughout the book, we learn more about who both Elle and J are, we learn about their pasts and what they want from their futures. We watch them grow, together and independently. We see them open up to each other and let their feelings out. “When im with you, my heart is bare, raw, open. It wouldn’t take much for you to rip it out if you chose.”There are many other characters in this book, that shouldn’t be overlooked. We have the best friends Chris and Aaron, they are loyal to Elle and you can feel how much they all love each other. Chris and Aaron had me laughing at many point with the funny banter they have amongst them all and the three way phone calls they share, to help Elle calm down. We also have a few others like Larry, Jesse and Jose who Elle works with and are also friends to her, but they don’t know the real Elle as she likes to say.Elle volunteers at a teen program, here she seems to give advice and become somewhat of a confidant and friend to the teens there. She helps a couple of the girls to make sure they are safe and she tries to help a few of the boys there. She soon find that there is problems with one the kids at the program and doesn’t know what to do about it.One text changes everything for her, she goes to help and things go wrong. The ending to this book, was so unexpected and totally shocked me, although it probably shouldn’t have. Elle would do anything to protect someone she cared about. Well done Emily Eck on a fantastic read. Come on book 2.Stacey

4.5 Stars !!I gotta say this is a great book, couldn’t finish in one sitting(husband, kids, job) but I sure tried. Kudos to Emily Eck for an amazing first project. You go Gurl!!! And the ending…….WTM(mess in lieu of swear). I am flabbergasted. This was definite 5 star + material for delivering a gratifying storyline, creating the perfect eccentric character and writing a passionate love story, but because I have prudish tendencies, I have to say I really could have done without all the drug usage. Sorry Ms. Eck but it was way to much. Marijuana is not that common place and add Xanax to the scene…… Really??!!(I understand you were building from it, but certain parts were hard to get through) And believe me I totally enjoy reading about flawed characters….example of my difficulty……at one point I was afraid to pull my tablet out in public in fear someone might consider me a drug user if they spied what I was so engrossed in, because despite all I just said, this story is Extremely Captivating.Eleanor Skye, better known as Elle, is single, free spirited and unattached in every since of the word. A sexy Amazonian beauty half street half nerd. We meet her as she is learning to appreciate the serenity of being independent and having her life on track after living years of instability. She has two BFF’s, stable employment, goals and no intentions of a relationship. So when she meets J’ real name, Bear Jesus Odel #Ilovehisname&Ilovehim this, as Elle would say, “giant of a man,” knocks her off her axis. But it’s all good. Because he’s beyond romantic, generous, lays the best pipe and he’s a fierce protector. After experiencing so much adversity in their youth, these two commitment phobic, street hardened individuals, find true love, security and hot sex! Their relationship grows into a comfortable union unlike anything the lovebirds ever experienced. As months pass, Elle can’t believe the turn her life has taken, but some things really are too good to be true. Sadly, this truth may end their relationship and something even more precious.Aside from the constant illegal drug usage, I truly love the story of Elle&J.’ They connected on a deep level of passion and trust. Expressing feelings of reluctance is all to common in people who are emotionally immature but Ms. Eck was able to provide insight into Elle’s past activities perfectly, drawing the reader in, regardless if you agree with the heroine’s callous ways. When I completed the book, I thought the story of Elle&J’ ended as well, however after reading every author note written in my copy, I learned their is a sequel. WHEW. Thank You x 100 Ms. Eck, I am so looking forward to more!reviewed by Lourdes for welovekink(dot)com

Oh, this was good. This was GOOD! It was slow to warm up, at first and I found myself a little put off by the main character, not able to connect with her. But by the time Elle got her white ass into 808???? Holy shit!!!! I was hooked! It was such a fun read. I enjoyed learning the slang terms to weed...you never know, they just might come in handy one day. Hehehehe! This book reminded me a lot of my own writing. I swear Emily & I could be long lost twins or something! Lol! Steel & Ice was funny, well thought out, had depth and a lot of steam & sweet. The sex was HOT & the snippets of sweet we got from J was heartwarming.J, with his tough exterior, was such a sweetheart. A lover through & through. He might have been hurt by a previous relationship, but for him to open himself to such an intense relationship with Elle was very brave. He truly is book boyfriend & actual boyfriend material. I loved his intensity & his love for Elle. His actions were a bit shady, but considering his dilemma, I could understand why he had to be secretive...but God, all to the detriment of Elle in the long run.I enjoyed Elle's character, with all the layers. I'm happy that there was depth to her character & I can imagine that there will be more to unravel in Melted & Shattered. I saw the gradual growth of her character & saw her maturing. I can imagine how much she will change in Melted & Shattered what with her involvement with those youths & that very unfortunate thing that happened to her at the end of this novel.Speaking of which.............DUDE!!!!!! WHAT THE FUCK????!!!That cliffhanger damn near almost killed me!....but it was OH SO GOOD!!!!! Can't fricking wait for Melted & Shattered!Fuckin' A! Lol! All I gotta say is, puff puff pass, homie! I'm ready for the next book!

Steel & Ice is the first in the series and it is a must read. I gave this one 5 stars. Emily Eck did an awesome job telling this story and I fell in love with Elle, J, and all the characters of this story. I was drawn into this book within the first few pages. I absolutely loved the dialect and slang that Emily used. I felt just like I was back in high school and talking to some of my friends. It brought back a lot of good memories. I understand the different sides of Elle. I feel the same way. There so many different sides of me but only one person gets to experience the REAL me with them all the time and “it’s home.” "Home wasn't a building or structure one lived in. Home was an idea, a phenomenon, an unexplainable feeling, a peace and contentment with the universe."The REAL Elle is shared only with her close friends Chris & Aaron. There is Kitchen Elle, Clubbing Elle, and School Elle & REAL Elle. Elle volunteers at a Spanish children’s center where she forms a bond with some teenagers she thought she would never enjoy. She cooks for them once a week to give them a break from their nightly pizza. She has been through a rough life with not the typical loving mother figure. She is headstrong and is used to taking charge of every room, and making her presence shine. She has guarded her heart with ice and doesn’t allow anyone to melt those walls down.J is the typical bad boy that everyone would go after. He is tall, dark and handsome. He spots Elle and decides he just can’t stay away from her. He is drawn to his light and decided he has to have her. J has also guarded his heart but with steel. He has been burnt in the past as well. What sacrifices will J make to be a part of Elle’s life? Will Elle’s love for her teens make or break her relationship with J? The ending of this book is definitely not anything I expected to happen and it is a total cliff hanger and will make you begging to read the next part of this series. You should read J Speaks to get J’s point of view on everything that happens. - See more at: http://kumikoleilostinabook.blogspot....

Elle has never known love, not really. She was never good enough for her mother and the only fond memories she has is playing games with her father. There are many different versions of Elle. Even she isn't sure of which is the REAL Elle. She has two besties who have her back, Chris and Aaron, but even they haven't seen the true to self version of her. Elle has secrets, things that she keeps special to her and a dark past from roaming the streets.J has made mistakes. The worst of them? Going to St. Louis. It's a mistake he regrets...every...single...day of his life.He looks to his grandfather's spirit for guidance. Being Lakota and raised by him he asks him to help him with this life of nothingness. He see a beautiful girl with golden eyes. He wants her to be his, but in a world of the illegal, how can he ask someone to be a part of his life? When Elle meets J it's a game of magnets. They are drawn together and pushed apart. When the attraction takes hold and they finally come together they can't be pulled apart. The funny thing about magnets though? There's always a flip side. When your calling starfish something is bound to creep up and you'll never expect how it all comes down. This is seriously one of the most addicting series I've read. I had the good fortune to read the next books in the series "J Speaks" and "Melted & Shattered". Holy wow! These are hot and amazing books and every...single...one... has a cliffhanger. These aren't the type that will be forgotten though. Believe me your going to have every moment etched in your mind.5 stars and be prepared not to sleep because this is a book that will NEED to be read straight through. Why? Because you won't want to put it down. If you do, it may cause a physical reaction of not being able to sleep until you finish it.I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

Elle grew up on some mean streets and learned to look out for herself at an early age. Now, at almost 23, she doesn't seem to know exactly what she wants in life, but she certainly knows what she doesn't want: STD's, pregnancy or to be taken advantage of, in any way. Though she uses drugs, she is very measured about how much, what type, when, and mostly, how to do it without messing up the other parts of her life. Perceptive and shrewd, Elle is mindful of the details. Enter J, edgy, beautiful and mysterious giant. Closed mouth about his 'secretive business' with a motorcycle club, J slips into Elle's life and past her defenses. Not an easy feat as Elle is very guarded. I loved his sexy, almost brusque, forceful moves on her. J knows exactly how to touch Elle to make her see stars. The sex scenes were detailed and hot, and nicely interspersed throughout the story without consuming the storyline. This is a story of Elle's journey, from mean streets to volunteering with misguided teens. From guarded to opening up to love and realizing her self worth. I didn't always like what the characters were doing in this book, particularly their obsessive-like need, and focus on, getting wasted and hooking up, (probably 'cause I have kids this age!) but even so, I think Eck crafted a realistic story of street-smart young adults, in a no-apologies, this-is-the-deal way. I applaud her for it!Already read 'J Speaks,' the short sequel to this novel, so I have insight on the cliffhanger ending, but I'm dying to know where J and Elle's relationship will go. So, onto the next book I must!

Steel and Ice By: Emily Eckert ♥♥♥♡ Cliffhanger alertSeriously? I struggled with this book through the first half. It felt slow and the drug use with every page got old to me. Yet, when the relationship between Elle and J started to deepen I loved it. This is the story of Elle and J. Two lost souls that have surrounded their hearts with steel and ice. Two souls that keep everyone at arms length, until they meet each other.Elle is tall, gorgeous and smart. She is trying to better herself by going to college and help in out teens at a youth center. She has been on the streets since she was sixteen so she can definitely relate. She has never had a relationship and absolutely has never spoken the word love to any man in her life. That is until she meets J.J seems to be the perfect man. Tall, dark and handsome. Oh and he is wealthy as well. He has never cared for anyone especially since he was part of an MC. He no longer wants to be part of the club but their is no way out. The debt he owes them is too large and he will be forever in their clutches. The last two percent of this book literally has you on edge. You are shocked and in tears. The story will take off in book two as the author has us gut wrenched with a cliffhanger.Looking forward to see what will happen. Live or die? Love or let go? Forgive or say goodbye? Oh the questions I need answered.~

Reviewed by Whitney@Shooting Stars ReviewsSteel and Ice begins with Elle meeting J at a bar. After that she never thinks to see him again but then she starts seeing him more and more. And he wants to make her his, but she's afraid of being with him. They each have secrets, and aren't exactly on the up and up. But together they believe they can make it even with all of the drama on the outside.. I really don't have a lot to say about this book. I didn't know what to expect going into it, and I wasn't really happy with the book. It turned out okay because I liked the story for the most part. But I hated how the characters talked. Seriously I felt my IQ drop from reading their dialogue. It drove me nuts. Then I also hated that we didn't really find out a whole lot about J. I felt pretty clueless about who he was in the book other than the main character's boyfriend. And then to top it off it ending in a MAJOR cliffhanger. Not a fun one either, in one where you want to pull your hair out because you have no freaking clue with the heck is going on now... *Sigh* That's where I'm at with this book. I'm not sure if I will read the next one, but with an ending like that it almost forces you to read it just to figure out what the heck is up.

This is my first biker romance, and I wasn't disappointed.Elle is is not a damsel in distress, she's strong and has covered her heart in ice. She doesn't need a man and she doesn't want one... at least not in the relationship sense.J owes his life to an MC, his life is full of violence and love has no place in it, so he covered his heat in steel. So when Elle and J have a chance encounter at a club, they can't seem to stay away from each other no matter how much they try. Drawn to each other, they chip away at the cold hard exterior of the others heart. But his loyalty to the MC threatens to tear them apart, will their hearts once again become hardened and cold or will their feelings overcome all obstacles?I felt like it had a smooth plot line, it keeps you hooked. Some parts I would have liked a little more, almost felt rushed. Other parts felt like they dragged a little bit. But those weren't very often and for the most part it had a great flow to it. The story of these two will draw you in and leave you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next. This book does end in a cliffhanger, so for those who like to have every book in a series before they read, add this to your TBR list now.(I loved the bit explaining the non word "cuz" just before the book started.)

This left me....What the hellin'…. as I was taken on an amazing rollercoaster journey, which left me craving more…. This is no normal motorcycle club….I loved watching this story develop as Elle let her ice melt as J’s steel shattered…. They opened up their protected hearts to one another…. Taking the risk to let love in…..J is a hot, badass giant of a man who does business for a MC, he wants out of….. He is a man of mystery…..Elle is a strong independent woman who has learnt the hard way in life but has finally got her shit together….The thought of letting anyone in to her life terrifies her but J makes her feel safe so she trusts him with her most precious gift….. Her heart…. As J and Elle continue to open up to each other….. The mystery of J’s business dealings is always there waiting to explode around them….. The question is can Elle handle knowing the truth or will it just end up hurting her???I loved this book and fast became lost into Elle’s world, simply keeping it real…. The ending left me a grasp as I did not see it coming….. I need more like yesterday and cannot wait for next instalment. This is an amazing debut novel and the start to a fabulous series I can foresee becoming one of my faves…..

She didn't see it coming and she really didn't want to deal with it. She was very comfortable with the ice queen title she had and wanted nothing or anyone to mess with her until she laid eyes on a Giant! Biker yeah he was a tall beautiful Biker with black hair and dark eyes that could see through your soul. His name...J.He lived in a black hole and knew what he was a monster that didn't deserve to move about with good people. But he could stay away from her any more and the black hole that he lived in was filled with light.Real this book was real not a HEA fairy tale that you dream about but a real life getting into trouble and living with the consequences book. And yeah I loved every single word written. I just needed to know what happened to make these two characters so jaded! How they would overcome the obstacles in their path and if they could or would come out on top. Loved, Loved, Loved the lack of sleep and total mind warp I had to finish this story. J& L, I can't get enough of their journey written to shine like the sun.

I liked the concept of the story and the main male and female characters, Elle and J, for the most part. I say for the most part, because I felt as though I was only given a very basic view of the character J, so he’s still a bit of a mystery to me…and Elle’s character seemed to be in a constant state of flux. I realize that Elle was in the process of transitioning from a tough, self-dependent young adult to a more mature and accomplished adult, while maintaining her “coolness” factor, but sometimes it just felt that for every step she took forward, she was taking 2 backwards. My absolute favorite parts were when Elle shared her wisdom and “life-lessons” with some of the teens at the center where she volunteered. It just made her seem more real and approachable…that was certainly when I connected with her character more. Overall, the story was a bit rough in the beginning but improved as the plot developed. I can see the talent and potential for author Emily Eck, especially with her perspective of real-world grittiness. 3 stars ~Kathy

Wow! This book sucked me in from the very beginning and kept me on the edge of my seat through the whole thing. It was intense, emotional, sexy, and funny. The relationship between the characters were awesome and the story line was interesting and the dialogue was candid and hilarious at times.J are Elle are like two halves of a whole. They just get each other. They bring out the best in each other. Elle has a fantastic personality that had me admiring her and laughing at her witty comments. J is a seriously sexy, sweet, understanding, and protective man. That’s not to say that they’re perfect which just makes them feel more like real people. All of the characters had personality and I enjoyed immersing myself in their world. The story flowed well and I found myself easily immersed within Elle & J’s world. The characters were wonderful and flawed which made me love them more. This book had me glued to my tablet from the very beginning and I managed to read it in one afternoon. I am really looking forward to the rest of the series. 5 out of 5 stars!
