This is a gem of a short story that deftly blends a palette of contrasting emotions in a very beautiful way. It’s not often that one begins a read with horrifying images of former pets feasting on corpses of family members and then finishes a brief time later with a sigh and a murmur: “Lovely; that was just lovely!”. But that was my experience with Ms Starks' The Lights.I don’t know how she managed, but she crafted a very good glimpse of human horror and turned it gently, smoothly, and almost imperceptibly into a restrained and gentle tale of compassion and hope. I highly recommend it for those who can handle both revulsion and redemption at one sitting.Note: the version that the writer kindly sent me was an ARC since I don’t have an Amazon/Kindle account. There are some proofreading errors/typos (mainly involving apostrophe usage). I suspect that these will be corrected in the next revision if they haven’t been already. She’s obviously a gifted writer with a good sense of mechanics. The errors didn’t stop my enjoyment of the story, but others might be distracted by them.

Dystopian with an awesome sci-fi thrust.I really wondered what I was reading at first. There's a dystopian setting, a sick survivor, and an unknown force that has destroyed the earth. Then... she meets an entity and the entire rest of the story is an eye opening and almost sensible look at the destruction of earth. To not give too much away, there is even a bit of ancient astronaut type plot! An overall good read!
