Cool Water is set in Belfast, barring some exposition, during the period after the troubles when the city was reinventing itself. Pete Haynes' lead character, Donny, is a product of a more violent time and his absolute refusal to temper his extreme violence is the backbone of the story. Cool Water is not light reading but it isn't supposed to be I suspect. Some of the scenes the author describes had me wincing but there's humour and a host of colourful characters to enjoy which more than offset the darkness of Donny Campbell.
