Let me start this review by saying that my reading started when I was young with comic books. My next move forward was with Hardy Boy type mystery for kids; however, my introduction to "adult" reading was Ian Fleming and James Bond. I read all the James Bond books in print during my 7th & 8th grade years. I have since pretty much snubbed most attempts to get me to read "spy" novels since they usually were beneath me as a reviewer.Through a bit of arm twisting (that would be guilt for taking so long to get a review done), I was given this book to read and review. My intention was to scan it quickly, get the simple plot, write a review, and get back to books I would enjoy. However, there was a problem. This book gave you about 20 pages (or less) to meet the characters and stuff started hitting the fan. Our hero Ross is NOT a spy, he is ex-military and just wanted a vacation (sorry about that, not gonna happen). You will hardly get a break in the action for the rest of the novel.Ross stumbles into a bit of a clash between Iranian spies and Israeli Mossad agents, the well-worn but effective "I am dying, get this secret information to " is used but nothing else you will see is familiar/unoriginal in this spy novel from the fact our hero gets knocked around a bit and the female Israeli spy has to bail him out more than once. This makes for a great dynamic and the pretty much true picture of bumbling diplomats makes you want to scream. The plot is basically the Iranians trying to get their hands on a nuke for purposes you think you can guess, but you would be wrong. It gets a lot more complicated and twisted. All fun and games, and our hero can hardly get anyone including the FBI to listen to him, which ratchets up the frustration level and leaves our hero and his female accomplish to fly solo for a lot of the novel.Bottom Line: The actions are crisp, the writing is equally good (had a couple of "where did they get the money" questions are all I could catch) and the story was great. The author could have injected a small bit of romance but the only hint of that is pretty much in the head of our female heroine (who does not need ANY man to save her). Throw in a great ending and I give it 4.5 Stars which I will round to 5.Reviewed by: Douglas C. MeeksMember of the Paranormal Romance Review Team

White Sea Rising is a thoroughly enjoyable thriller that imagines an Iran whose nuclear ambitions have been realized. Protagonist Barrett Ross is an unlikely hero: vacationing at a Middle East resort, he receives a package and instructions from a dying man. Caught in a web of murderous intrigues he is unable to neatly pass the information to authorities and return to mundane concerns. Instead, bound by an unspoken duty, he follows the thread where it leads. Kephart echoes Vince Flynn in extrapolating from the headlines to create a plausible terrorism thriller. His meticulous research and rich detail add delightful texture that enriches a fast-moving storyline - a hallmark of Tom Clancy's writing. White Sea Rising is a great read that has me already anticipating Kephart's next book.

Sophisticated Spy, Espionage ThrillerI could be mistaken, but this appears to be Mr. Kephart's first and only novel. If this is the case, I am even more impressed with this savvy work, filled with colorful characters, heart-racing action, and a fairly believable plot dealing with the theft of weapons-grade uranium. His writing flows smoothly, and his main characters are fairly well-defined. Some may find the protagonist's ability to evade one tight spot after another is a little unbelievable, but these days, a perusal of any newspaper calls for suspension of disbelief; that's why I enjoy fiction. Any plot improbabilities are overshadowed by a nice writing style and enough action to keep any adrenaline junkie entertained. Mr. Kephart is an excellent addition to the literary scene, and I look forward to reading his future works.

I have one requirement with a thriller: I don't want to put the book down. This debut novel starts with Sada, a sexy Mossad agent, throttling an Arab spy . . . and it just does not let up. The hero, Barrett Ross, is not only capable physically as a former Iraq soldier. He also has to solve a very unusual mystery that keeps leading him and Sada further and further into trouble. Top-notch action scenes, a villain I could really hate, and a nice guy-gal duo that pull out all the stops--this book was a great surprise. Two thumbs way up.

When three friends gather in Dubai for a little R&R they never expect to find themselves in the middle of an international struggle to gain control of a nuclear device. A former Army officer (Ross) and a Mossad agent (Sarah) join forces to stop an elite Iranian military unit aided by a scientist determined to obtain an old Soviet warhead. The hunt starts in Dubai passes through Germany and on to Washington DC and West Virginia.Well written with interesting characters. No sexNo graphic violence although there is a high body count

I have only given 5 Star ratings to a few books since I joined Goodreads. White Sea Rising deserves to one of them! I have had this book on my Kindle for quite some time and never got around to it. But stranded over the week-end at a hotel on a business trip I was able to finish what I started at the beginning of this trip. This book is indeed excellent. It is well crafted and the characters and plot are well developed. It is not overdone as some in this genre tend to be. It was perfect. I loved the beginning, the middle and the end!

This book was amazing, it captivated my attention and I finished it in two and a half days. It's story is something that outlines a fear I think everybody has deep down. What if? It was extremely well written, and shows that M.J. Kephart has done his homework. I really enjoyed reading the quotes at the start of every part, it was a nice touch. Overall the novel is great and action packed throughout and is definitely a must read.

I got this novel in a goodreads comp and found it quiet hard to get into, needing to really concentrate with the characters and their locations maybe I found it so hard because when I started it there was the Malaysian aero plane shot down with a missile in the ukraine and the israel Palestine conflict flare up, reading on once I got into the novel I'm glad I finished it being well written just not my type of novel more suited to the male readers

Captivating page turner! White Sea Rising kept me reading. It's one of those thrillers that kept me up late. I had to read "just one more chapter." The characters are believable and compelling, and the story hangs together without any loose ends that made me scratch my head. I especially appreciate the way the author didn't "over-explain" or preach, and yet I came away with a better understanding. I highly recommend this novel for lovers of ex-military adventure thrillers.

Could not put this book down! Loved the characters, setting and plot! It has been awhile since I have read a book that I couldn't put down. I do not have a military background, but MJ Kephart makes it easy to understand and relate to. This book is kind of my worst nightmare; wrong place at the wrong time, but the excitement and adventure makes it truly phenomenal. Barrett rocks! I look forward to reading more books by this author. His writing is superb! A suspenseful, must read!

I received this book in exchange for an honest review, and honestly, I loved it! From the very beginning, I was captivated and I just couldn't put this book down. The characters were nicely developed and relatable (even though I have never even known anyone with a military background), the plot was exciting and intriguing, and the entire thing was clearly well researched. I definitely look forward to reading more books by MJ Kephart!

I stayed up all night reading because I just had to know what was going to happen next. It is one of the best military spy thrillers that I have read. The story drew me in, I was cheering for Barrett Ross and the history behind the settings made this book of fiction seem real. I highly recommend White Sea Rising, it is a must read! I look forward to reading more from MJ Kephart.

An interesting first effort by a combat vet, but the author’s plot weaves a tale that challenges your imagination. Too bad nobody proofread the manuscript to correct the numerous unfinished sentences, typos and grammatical slip-ups that distract from the story. Not ready for prime time comes to mind, regardless of the author’s friends who tout this book as the “last coming” on Amazon.

Hoping for a sequel with Barrett and Sada.I rate it a 5 star based on a great story line with two interesting protagonists. I am a fan of Daniel Silva and enjoyed White Sea Rising as much as his stories. If you like thrillers, read this one.
