A gray Mercedes plows into the crowd. Augie, Janice and the baby are among the victims.Part 2Chapters 1-3About a year after the Mercedes crash, Retired Detective K. William Hodges watches more grubby reality shows, fails to enjoy his beer, and thinks, again, of shooting himself. The arrival of the mail distracts him. A letter, allegedly from the driver of the killer Mercedes, stuns him. The writer brags about killing eight and wounding many. He says that he got off sexually at he drove into the crowd. He wore a condom and used bleach to get rid of any DNA. He wore a hair net under a clown mask for the same reason. He knows Hodges is miserable and hopes the letter cheers him up. He gives Hodges a website where they can talk, including a username: kermitfrog19.Chapters 4-6Hodges wonders if he should turn the letter over to his former partner, Pete Huntley. He believes the writer is the killer because he knows inside information about the condom and the bleach. The idea of using this letter, and chats on line, to catch the killer gives Hodges a reason to live.Chapter 7-9Hodges analyzes the letter and sees that the writer has several identifying traits, including misusing perk for perp and peppering his words with an image of a smiley face. The same smiley face was glued onto the steering wheel of the Mercedes. Hodges calls Pete and makes a lunch date.......

Not sure why I took so long to read Stephen King. He's a master storyteller. Read this latest offering in two days. Realistic story, LOL moments and ending wrapped up beautifully. Just the right balance between creepy and clever.

Very good read about a retired cop, who seems to have lost all interest in the world until the creep from the last investigation he worked on (never solved) contacts him. It awakes his interest in life and gets him going on a dangerous trail of the Mercedes putting the cop as well as his friends in danger. Movie on it is currently being shown as a serial series on Audience Network TV station.

The man knows how to write a book and keep you hooked. And he knows how to write an ending to let you know the book is over carefully, not leaving threads unwoven or rushing and skipping details.A man drives a stolen car into a crown of job seekers, killing and maiming people. A retired police detective receives a letter teasing him with details. What's a retired detective to do except track down the killer? And that's just what Bill Hodges does. Along the way he involves other people and only when everyone is fully engaged does he realize he has asked them to risk more than he--retired and depressed--is risking. And then, of course, it is too late. Retribution has been set in action.Tightly written, with wonderful characters and plot, this is a book to enjoy, but maybe not late at night.

Not the strongest King novel, but one has to admire someone that is willing to try writing in new genres. I deviate from other reviewers in a few ways, but here are my main points after finishing this one:1. Strong beginning and ending.2. Weak middle and fairly predictable throughout (unlike his other stories which are "more about the journey"3. Characters were well-built and fleshed out.Worth reading because I just finished the 2nd of the trilogy and it was fantastic (couldn't put it down and finished it in two days!)

I've read all of King's books except The Dark Tower series which I could just not get into. This one easily falls into one of his top seven. He just keep churning these hits out. I hope he live forever.

It took me a couple chapters to become engaged, but once I did it was fantastic.

A page turner. High suspense. A war between good and evil.

Fast-paced. Hard to put down. King has an incredible insight into the mind of the character he created, shares and scares us with it. Couldn't put it down.

SK is best when he doesn't write horror stories. Mr. Mercedes deserves to be ranked as one of his best novels. I could not put it down until I finished it. Long life to SK!
