A continuation of an earlier novel, A Lovesome Thing,, this book follows the university professors, police officers, demons, and their families as they discover that things were not settled at the end of the last book, although they thought so. A magician goes home for summer, a department head goes on vacation, a cop gets his next assignment, and a demon comes back....For the next week, although they don't always know it, their paths begin to cross.Like all of Bowne's books, the novel funny, tense, charming, and frightening at the same time. But the best part is the magic. What would a world be like if magic really worked? If you could use magic to cure people, to protect your home, to act as special lights for driving at night in fog? The world would be wonderful and horrible.Bowne's experience in higher education makes the Royal Academy at Osyth, a university dedicated to magic, alchemy, and the like, become a real place with all the ambitions and rivalries that fuel our own educational system. And no spoilers, but the novel contains not one but several heroes, and it ends with a magnificent surprise.
