I used to participate in these annual summer reading contests with my local public library. If you got to a certain number of pages over the course of your vacation, you won prizes that got better and better the more you read. I think at one level I ended up winning one of those canvass bags people bring with them to hippie grocery stores. And, at the highest level - which I achieved - I got to meet the mayor in a ceremony in the Tacoma Dome convention center. She gave some dumb speech on the importance of reading or something, I don't know, I wasn't paying attention because the last time I had to wear a button-down shirt and slacks was also the last time I was ever forced to go to church as a five year old.The funny thing is, to get to that peak number of pages, I mostly just read collections like these Far Side books (Peanuts, Garfield, Calvin & Hobbes, even the Family Fucking Circus) along with one actual book with text to "prove" that I've been reading when we met with the librarian for our weekly update. That mayor had no idea, no idea at all!!!!

I used to think Gary Larson was hilarious. This one didn't do it for me though. Maybe he seemed funnier back when he was breaking ground. Maybe this collection wasn't as good as some. Maybe my tastes have changed.

Goodall's forward needed to be a bit shorter but Larson's cartoons, as always, make me laugh.

Gods how I love Gary Larson. Seriously, I grew up on Far Side comics and I think they are one of the main foundations for my odd sense of humor. The Far Side is just bizarre, in the best way possible. A different kind of bizarre is the fact that Jane Goodall wrote the foreword for this volume. Didn't see that coming. But then, I didn't know about the controversy surrounding the "Goodall tramp" comic that was really only an issue because Goodall was in Tanzania at the time and the current director of the Jane Goodall Institute took it upon herself to be offended without any input from Goodall herself, who thought the comic was hilarious. The Far Side is something anyone should consider adding to their collection. If you like funny and strange, this comic is for you.

Oh, books of my past.I've had The Far Side Gallery books for as long as I can remember. I grew up reading these comics and giggling to myself. Every time I come back to them I understand some of the more 'adult' and scientific jokes and puns and the comics only get more enjoyable. This collection of five books is fantastic, and brings together all (?) or at least a significant amount of Gary Larson's work.

A wonderful charity shop find - still funny upon countless readings!

I think maybe these don't tickle my funny bone as much as they did when I was a kid. As always, a few strike me as brilliant and laugh-out-loud funny, some strike me as just dumb, and most seem clever and mildly funny. Definitely enjoyable.

Weird, hilarious, occasionally veer into dude not funny but mostly just an extremely funny sideways look at life.

Just as humorous as the other Far Side Gallery book I read. It's very hilarious to see one strip comics where the setups explain everything with having to go into detail about happens next.

Another of the cartoon books given to me as a Christmas present by my sons, getting a re-read after some 15 or so years. This one appears to be the last, since Mr. Larson left the cartooning business after that. But what distinguishes this from his other collections is a very funny foreword by primatologist/naturalist Jane Goodall. This was in response to one of the panels depicting a female monkey grooming her mate and stating, “A blonde hair. I think you’ve been keeping company with that Goodall trollop again.” (or something to that effect). Turns out that not only Ms. Goodall thought the cartoon hilarious, but goes on to say she’s a fan and refers to refer to several others. And of course, the depiction of anthropomorphized bugs, cattle, amoeba and other such animals is quite amusing (in the LOL manner). Quick read, fun times, highly recommended.

The introduction by Jane Goodall was actually one of the best parts of the anthology, really, partially because it's by Jane Goodall (who is a neat lady) and partially because it's actually a decent introduction. The cartoons are smart, incisive and entertaining, but they're not usually laugh-out-loud funny and many of them are rather dated (which is fine, but not quite as forgivable in cartoons as other things). "Far Side" was a cartoon that I cut out of the paper and taped to my dorm room door, it's not really a cartoon I'm going to keep books of.

The last collection of far side cartoons. Get them, read them and be glad we had this many. The Far side was a unique cartoon that looked at life with a skewed perspective that has to be seen to be appreciated. From cows who walk around on two legs until a car load of humans appears to an elephant in a top coat who's looking for the hunter who winged him in Africa, life is seen though an odd and distorting, yet so funny glass.

I remember being introduced to the Far Side by a very good friend after a heavy session of serious alcohol...I know that it's nothing to be proud of [but it felt good at the time], yet I have often wondered if my state of alcohol-induced giggles was entirely down to the Far Side...ANSWER = IT WAS....The books are outstandingly still funny.

A great collection of consistently humorous Far Side tales, silly but not to the point of being dumb. Larson satirizes everything from suicide to political protest to serial killers---and even his own cartoon series.

Re-read March 3, 2010. Last of the treasuries. Typical Larson: odd, bizarre, hilarious. Cartoons from: Cows of Our Planet, The Chickens are Restless, and The Curse of Madame "C". Foreword by Jane Goodall.

See the cover? In the world of Gary Larson, even flies go to horror movies that revolve around their secret fears. Prepare to see the world from new perspectives, and laugh really hard about the absurdity of it all.

I think the foreword by Jane Goodall was superb (especially since several of Larson's comics over the years incorporated her work - in his comedic sense). And as usual, Larson's sense of humor just puts a smile on your face and gives some relief from the normal pressures of the day.

This brings memories from our 3rd grade book fair. It's missing but not forgotten. It was amusing then and I'd probably find it more amusing now.

One of the great wildlife authors/artists. Larson depicts wildlife and life in general, in ways most people don't see.

I laughed out loud several times and ended up reading this entire book despite my plan to only read a few cartoons. Gary Larson is a twisted genius with a unique perspective.
