    – This novel was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review –and was reviewed for http://theereaderjunkie.wordpress.comI requested this book because I had read one of Deanna Chase’s novellas in the Kiss of Christmas magic boxed set and enjoyed it, it looked like a standalone and the blurb looked good. In fact, it’s a spin-off from the Jade Calhoun series. However, stepping into it was easy and it can be read as a standalone. So, let’s start with what I didn’t like…First and foremost, the heroin. Pyper isn’t entirely unlikeable, she’s basically a good girl but with dumb moments. A few more braincells and not jumping to conclusions would be nice. It started early in the book, she was about to act stupidly not once, but twice, yet eventually didn’t for reasons that left me wary and prevented me from fully enjoying the book. I kept myself at a distance, watching her actions and waiting for stupidity to happen. And then, she did again ! But went all the way. You’re told by a powerful witch to stay out of a potentially dangerous situation, you do. She didn’t. You’re hopelessly falling for a charming ghost but still want to try a regular human relationship, it’s understandable, but you don’t go out on a date with said human while you’re being targeted by another powerful witch because you wouldn’t want the guy to get hurt, especially without warning him about the danger, right ? She doesn’t give it a thought. And you go out simply with a gun because that’s enough to protect you, obviously. And your closest friends (witches, both of them) let you go without blinking because staying under their protection is irrelevant, right ? Rrrrright… And a few other things like that. Also, there were inconsistencies : when Jade is in the house, she texts “we” (as if her husband Kane is with her) a few times, but Pyper believes she is alone in there and texts Kane to come to her rescue ? Julius enters her bed when she’s barely awake and she calls him “Kane” ? Because your best friend’s husband is used to doing that ? And Julius doesn’t even blink to be called another man’s name ? The way she answers Brant’s question near the end about how her friends and herself would react is completely naive for someone who is supposed to have led a tough life. Some more things bothered me : she snaps at people when she’s angry. She tells people rude things – she might regret it instantly, but she does it at least twice. OK, she’s been seeing ghost since only recently, she’s under a lot of stress, but still, it comes so naturally it looks like a habit. She doesn’t intend to tell her human date about Julius, which bothered me. A guy is apparently smitten with you, you’re honest with him, that’s all. Julius has mood swings, from charming and sexy to withdrawn and broody. And what happens at him at the end is a little toooo convenient for the story. Hem !Now that I’ve probably turned you away from that book, what did I like ?– a ghost story set in New Orleans : never bad ;– in spite of the character flaws, the story was well written in terms of pace, settings and warm friendships. You see the author has practice and ideas. As a conclusion, it could have been a good story if the heroin didn’t get on my nerves so quickly, the inconsistencies really tipped the scale in favor of my not reading the rest of the series. I have one more book by Deanna Chase included in a boxed set, I’ll make up my mind after reading it if I’ll continue with this author or not.

Never underestimate the value of a good stiletto! I'm familiar with this author's work from the Jade Calhoun series. While that's not required reading before this book, it does make for a richer read as it fills in back story for many of the characters. Pyper is your ordinary, run of the mill girl. She's a former strip club manager, current artist working with body paint and models, and owns a coffee shop. She also talks to spirits, and lusts after an especially fine ghost. New Orleans normal, right? She and her friend Jade, an empath, artist, and witch, seem to have a knack for being in the wrong place at the right time. Pyper finds a murdered woman, and the plot thickens quickly from there. Well written with quick pacing, fast wit, and Deanna's signature blend of sexy paranormal mystery, this is a fun read.

People tend to dwell more on negative things than on good things. So the mind then becomes obsessed with negative things, with judgments, guilt and anxiety produced by thoughts about the future and so on. - Eckhart Tolle I keep going to the river to pray'Cause I need something that can wash out the painAnd at mostI'm sleeping all these demons awayBut your ghost, the ghost of youIt keeps me awake - Ella Henderson - Ghost I am a Deanna Chase junkie. There. I said it. Loud and proud, Baby! Her Jade Calhoun series, beginning with Haunted on Bourbon Street is an automatic ‘must buy’ for me. The books combine fantasy, humour, great characters and of course the spectacular New Orleans life into a treat for the reader. We first met Pyper Rayne in Haunted when she was being terrorized by one of the nastiest ghosts you can imagine. Now, with Spirits, Stilettos, and a Silver Bustier Pyper gets her own series – (yes, that is me, dancing around the room and giggling. Get over it. ;-) )Pyper’s life is working out pretty well, if she does say so herself. She owns her own coffee shop right next to the stripper bar where she used to work. Her friends are all safe (for now), she has good friends, and she is getting ready for a gallery showing of her body painting. Exciting! The only thing is – when she shops for a vintage dress for her gallery show, everything starts running off the rails. The shop owner ends up dead, and Pyper is the prime suspect. Add to that the ghostly voices coming from the walls, and the hot ghost who is following her around, and life is getting a lot less happy than it was just yesterday.Spirits is a great new addition to the original series. Pyper was always one of my favorites of the Bourbon Street series, and the first book in her series does wonders for the character. We get to meet new characters, including a sexy ghost with highly unusual talents, the mystery is very well done as all Deanna’s mysteries are, and the setup for the next book is awesome. If you like your UF with a bit of mystery, not a lot of ‘over the top’ smexy, and a good deal of humour, this is a series you should try!I receive this book from the publisher in exchange for a realistic review. Highly recommended.

My only complaint about the book was that I finished it too fast!! I loved the story...the focus is on Pyper and her ghost friend Julius. This book held my attention from beginning to end and I can't wait to see what happens next in their story. We start off with Pyper becoming the target of a witchy killer and her friends and Julius try to help her stay one step ahead.Definitely a must read!

This was really good - and I don’t read paranormal romance and was turned off by the title. I loved the characters. This is a spin off from Jade’s series, which you obviously don’t need to had read to enjoy this. The magic, ghosts and witches are believable within the story and it’s just fascinating. The romance is delightful as is the friendship. Highly recommend.

I have read Deanna Chase before and really enjoyed her Jade Calhoun series which started off with the first book Haunting on Bourbon Street. New Orleans is the setting for these series, and is a great place to combine the contemporary and the arcane history of the place in all its forms, both of which, of course, New Orleans is renowned for. This series is a spin-off from the Jade Calhoun books, and retains a good balance of the mystique paranormal world of witches, voodoo and magic, with the modern day retail world of a pastry shop, next door to a night club. The focus is set on Pyper, who has the unfortunate gift of liaising with ghosts, surrounded by her closest friends Jade a witch, and Kane a sensitive and astute hipster and savvy businessman. Objectify these images with strong personalities and crazy events, and the reader is left focused on a good mystery murder as the book morphs into a fine esoteric novel.Pyper buys a ‘new’ dress for her art opening event, and the scene is set for a novel that quickly reaches plenty of action shooting out from multiple directions. Nothing is simple, too many doorways open and close in on Pyper leaving her in terror and fear for her friends, her favourite ghost, and not just the supernatural, because not even the police department likes her.

One of those Can't Put It Down Until I Find Out What Happens Next books. Lots of action, plot twists, and suspense, all set in one of my favorite places to be. With supportive friends both living and ghost, Pyper works to solve the murders done by a witch/serial killer and winds up in jail, fighting for her own life, and trying to sort out her relationship with a living ghost, while running her coffee shop and advance her career as a very unusual artist.

I started reading the Jade Calhoun series several years ago and actually lost track of the series until this past year. Life sadly gets in the way. I was delighted to see she continued with Pyper's spin-off. It was incredibly easy to step back into the world Deanna created. Pyper is as sassy as ever and I believe even if you haven't read Jade and Kane's story yet this series can stand alone. However, be warned it will make you want to pick the first series.

Funny And RomanticI loved the sexy, smart heroine and her ghost boyfriend. The dialogs were witty. The romance wasn't like reading a skin magazine. I don't think I'm a prude, but I don't enjoy reading 10 pages of who put what where.

Great story!I laughed and enjoyed myself reading this book! Pyper can talk to ghosts and her friend Jade is an empath and witch. Their adventures in this book are crazy and scary but the sense of humor they both have keep things on the light side. A totally enjoyable read!!

Fun AND funny with a side of super sexy. I do love witches ... and New Orleans .. and stiletto heels ... and 1920s rum runners. Yeah, I pretty much loved everything about this one. Guess I gotta go get the sequel. (Sigh) Life is rough.

My first introduction to Deanna Chase's writing was a few years ago with the Jade Calhoun series first book Haunted on Bourbon Street. I really enjoyed it, but somehow didn't read anymore. Then the opportunity came for me to read the books in her spinoff series, Pyper Rayne from the author and I was excited to try them! I wasn't disappointed.Spirits, Stilettos and a Silver Bustier is a good read all the way around! While hard to pin it to one specific category, I guess I'd call it a supernatural/paranormal almost cozy urban mystery. There's a little too much sexual innuendo to be a full-on cozy, but there's not so much that it could be considered erotica. It's playful and fun and not offensive.Ms. Chase has a clear, flowing writing style that makes the story easy to read. I finished this in two days, not because I wanted to stop reading, but because I had to go to work! The action was quickly paced which kept me absorbed until the end. The characters feel real, each having their good sides and bad - even the ghosts! This may be a spinoff series, but you won't feel lost if you haven't read the Jade Calhoun series. The author does a great job of referring to past events with enough explanation that you understand, but doesn't take away from what is happening in the present. If you enjoy witches, ghosts, magic, and a little mayhem with your mystery; then give Spirits, Stilettos and a Silver Bustier a try!

Okey so lets see what I think about this book.Well it was an interesting read, not what I usually experience. It was mainly centred around mediums, seers, witches and similar magic. There is a mystery plot in there, thought I didn't quite feel it was the centre of the story even if it had a vital role to play. The mystery was quite well written, the characters was also fleshed out in a well done manner. The essence of the story thought was the romance, which was very well written if you ask me.The story it self gave me a sense of a slow going but oddly enough the pace was very befitting. If you want a good romance with a touch of mystery with well written characters this book suits you.

Great characters and a ghostly mysteryOh that was good. I loved Pyper, Jade, and Kane and their awesome friendship. I'm a little less sold on Julius; he had some great moments and some shady ones. I guess that's human for you though. Apparently there's a Jade series as well, but I've never read those so all these people were brand new to me. There was a lot of great supernatural stuff going on and I'm a sucker for a good supernatural story. And one with a twist, too! Took me a while to figure it out completely, which is high praise coming from me. I'd definitely recommend this.

Sometimes on a rainy day, you just want to curl up with a good, easy to read book. This spin off from the Jade Calhoun series (which I love by the way) fit the bill nicely. A good cozy mystery, easy to read without having to think too much. A hint of mystery, a touch of the supernatural with a sprinkling of romance between Pyper and her ghost friend Julius. It’s a recipe for a fun read. Not to mention that I love Deanna Chase’s style of writing. Sure, this book is a touch predictable, but the characters are fun, the story line is light and it’s a witchy mystery in New Orleans. Say no more!

I enjoyed this, but I probably would have liked it more had I read all of the Jane Calhoun books. Not knowing how they got to this point left me a little lost. I like that Pyper got her own series, but man she was good at jumping to conclusions, and getting herself into trouble. And, I have to admit, it took me awhile to figure out who the bad guy was and why it took them so long to figure it out. I think I'll continue the series after finishing the JC books first. By the time I finished this one, I still wasn't sure who some of the characters were.

I won this book on facebook.I love the title ,the book was a little confusing to get into, this is the first book in the series,I thought that it would have more insight when introducing characters, I thought that it would start from the beginning, of have everything came be,I love the storyline it was just the introduction of characters that I have a problem with, this is not a stand alone book,if you're like me you want to know the background and the back story to everything

I bought this book in a set of five different authors. Thinking to get to know how each of them fare. Well, please forgive me for saying this . But how in the hell did this book get such a high rating? Seriously, It was boring, Lagged thru the whole book. It was a do I want him does he want me book. If you gave this book a high rating. Why? I never connected to any of the characters. I kept thinking how much more should I suffer through before I stop and move onto the next book.

Spirits,Stilettos, and Silver Bustiers (Pyper Rayne Book 1)I really liked this book it kept my interest in seeing how it was going the only thing I thought a little off was when the one cop said his partner had been a good friend of the owner of the vintage dress Pyper had bought. If that was the case his partner should have been a lot older than the booked talked like. Other than that I really liked it.

What fun!Picture having friends that are witches and ghosts. Friends that help you and protect you from the bad types. When Pyper gets involved with 2 recently deceased ladies, now ghosts that were used in a sacrifice, she needs a lot of help from the other world in solving the murders. Read to see what happens.
