The world named the catastrophe, “The Irish Potato Famine.” The children of Éire simply called it, “The Great Hunger.“ But amid that terrible darkness a light of hope burned in a man determined to fulfill his destiny. Despite the betrayals of those dearest to his heart and the sorrows overwhelming his precious Ireland, Michael McKevett continued to carve. With scarred, bloodstained hands, he created beautiful carousel horses that swept his troubled neighbors away, if only for a few moments, into the Land of the Ever Young. But could he keep his dream and his family alive long enough for the sunlight to return? Originally published 25 years ago, this story of love, courage, and the strength of the human spirit remains McKevett’s finest work. ...

Michael McKevett's story takes place in Ireland before and through the Potato Famine. It is a beautifully written story of Family tradgy and true Love. This story was originally published twenty five years ago. This story really touched my heart.

This is one of my all time favorite books. Love the characters and the story. This book is full of wonderful descriptions. This was my second time reading it but certainly will not be the last time.

3.5 Set in Ireland around the Great Hunger or Potato Famine the book told the village stories full of great characters. The story told all the different aspects and horrors of the period along with a beautiful love story and of family.

DNF on pg 119 because it's just so bland and boring to me. *yawns and slow blink*

While this is not the sort of book I would normally read (usually sticking to thrillers and contemporary romances), I found myself having to slow down and make sure I read each and every word, and try to race ahead to find out what happened. A fantastic story that keeps you entertained and spellbound by the beautiful world that has been created. It really had my emotions in an upheaval (I was ready to reach into the book and punch Annie in the face - what a nasty piece of work!!!) Great read!
