Amazing, thrilling, super engaging!Combines my two biggest loves -detective stories and medieval tales- in such a skillful and enchanting manner that once you read the first 1 or 2 pages, it's impossible to stop.

Sansom's books are not classic Tudor bodice rippers. Nor are they romantic fiction. They are gruesome, brutal and fast paced crime thrillers. His books evoke Tudor England so well that the reader can almost smell the 16th century. If I had a time machine handy I would think twice about visiting Sansoms world. Sometimes famous characters enter the story. People like Sir Richard Rich, Cromwell and Anne Boleyn but it is done so well that it is totally believable.Once I started reading the first book I could not put the books down. I have devoured them all. His research is meticulous and I imagine they took many years to write. I wish he would write some more.

I'd give this two and a half stars if possible. I listened to the audio book, which may or may not have tainted my review. The historical time period was interesting (dissolution of the monasteries under England's Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell) but I felt that the pace was slow and I just didn't care that much about the characters.
