How much are you influenced by the way others see you? Main character S in Ernesto Sabato’s ‘The Angel of Darkness’ muses at one point that hell is being seen by other people. How many times a day do you look at yourself in the mirror? And how frequently do you judge what you see? French Decadent Catulle Mendès (1841-1909) has been called ‘a Petrarchist of the horrible’. He also was a prolific author, having written 16 novels, 35 short-story collections, 11 volumes of poetry and 13 plays. If you only read English, chances are you have not read any of his work and for good reason – other than a few selections and short stories, none of his writing has been translated. However, there is one little gem that is a cross between fairytale and decadent conte cruel. Once read, never forgotten. Here is a link; can be read in 5 minutes.

(Just the short story / fairy tale)"For if someone thinks you are beautiful, and loses no chance to tell you so, he is almost as good as a mirror. "
