4/11/15: Still awesome with just a few changes/additions - namely a new character.Bottom line though, if you are happy with the first original edition, I don't know if this really added anything to that experience. I don't regret buying it though as there is supposed to be a new story with the new character.4/8/15: Re-reading this 2012 read because word on the street is that it's a revised and EXPANDED edition!!!!

Gasp, this steamy novella from EC has a plot!!! Is it the end of the world as we know it? LOL!From the book blurb:Convicted by the Coalition of a minor crime, Riana is sentenced to life on a prison planet - no order, no safety, just a primitive hold filled with criminals vying for dominance. The only way Riana can survive is to give herself to the strongest man there in return for protection. By desperate instinct, she chooses a mysterious, handsome loner named Cain. She offers him her body and can only hope he'll be able to protect her from the other inmates who circle her like beasts. She never dreams she will come to take pleasure in Cain. Or want to offer him her heart as well as her body.I admit that I started to read this book expecting to find a flimsy plot hidden behind a bunch of scorching sex scenes, so I was more than pleasantly surprised when I realized I'd been way off the mark. This story was dark and sometimes violent, as life in a prison dominated by dangerous criminals should be, and some events could have been disturbing if I hadn't ditched the rose-tinted glasses I usually wear when reading romance books. Don't let that scare you away from this book, though. Ultimately, it's still a romance book, with a great plot, a sexy and dangerous hero, a likable heroine, a believable love story and, yes, hot sex scenes. It even has an epilogue, even though I think the story would have been better wihtout it. Yeah, I know I complain when a romance book doesn't have an epilogue, but in this case, the epilogue doesn't fit the story. Does that make sense? No? Well, you'll have to read the book to understand what I mean. ;)"My" Cain - dark, dangerous and delicious:

It came to my attention it had been re published and substantially revised and expanded so I decided to grab the newer version and see the difference. The main story between the hero and heroine is the same. Maybe a touch neater and a touch more depth to it, especially at the ending. The main difference is the addition of a new character, Hall, who it seems may be getting his own book at some point. However, still loved it.It is not an overly complicated premise, it pretty much focuses on the 2 main characters, Riana and Cain, with Cain being a pretty mysterious character throughout, but with glimpses of who he was before, and how he is trying to retain his humanity, when all around him have devolved to base animal instinct! An erotic, hot enjoyable read.

Overall rating: 4.5 stars!! (NOTE: this review is for the 2015 version, which is different from the older one)Cheating: NoLove triangle: NoAnything sexual with om/ow: NoAmount of Sex In The Book: lots Overall Steam Factor/Chemistry (between 1-5): 3.5Themes that may be triggers for some: questionable consentHEA/HFN: HEAMy review:So wow, this was a very interesting read for me, but when all was said and done, I kind of loved it!The heroine, Riana, was written in such a relatable way that I always felt in touch with (and completely understood) her fear, her desperation, her growing love and affection for Cain, the prisoner who becomes her protector and provider.Cain was such an interesting character. It was clear from the beginning that, prior to being imprisoned, he must have been a good man with a good heart. And that spark of goodness was still there, which lead Riana to know that he was the right man to give herself to. He was also incredibly strong, confident, intelligent and capable. The first time they had sex was definitely uncomfortable for me. Was it rape? It could be argued that it was because she had no choice; if she wanted to survive, she needed a protector. The way to assure a protector was to offer sex. And Cain did not waste any time in taking her up on her offer. (Honestly, despite my discomfort, when you really think about how Cain spent a year living in those depraved conditions and basically using his strength to survive, I think he showed amazing humanity -- even right away.)As things played out, I slowly started to feel more and more comfortable with the relationship that was developing between Riana and Cain. It was clear that Riana's feelings for Cain were growing deeper. And Cain's behavior seemed to indicate that his were as well, but we had to depend on Riana's POV, and she wasn't certain. I SO badly wanted to know that Cain felt love for Riana. Also….that little niggle of discomfort was there because she was never in a position of power. I kept wondering if this would ever get addressed or resolved. And Cain (and his thoughts and feelings) remained a mystery for a long time. I think the author wanted it to be this way and I would not want to spoil anyone’s reading experience by giving away too much about what happens or how Riana and Cain find their HEA. The experience is better if you just go for it and watch it all unfold!! ☺ WARNINGS: As I noted, some people may feel uncomfortable with how the relationship starts with Cain and Riana. Also, if reading about people having sex while others are watching bothers you, do not read this. Cain and Riana have NO privacy. Overall, this is kind of a dark romance so approach cautiously.

5 stars! Well this book was a pleasant surprise I was looking for something different and I sure found it with this one. "Hold" is a set somewhere in the future where we have more than one planet earth where humans live. One of those planets is just for criminals where they are isolated, and the prison is located under a poisoned ocean, in other words no way to escape. No matter your crime from murder to petty theft everyone is sent there, and for life. Riana, is sent to that prison, which is filled with violent murders, pure chaos and everything is survival of the fittest. She's scared doesn't know what she going to do till someone whispers in her ear "find the strongest man there give your self to him in return for protection" those words save her life. Enter Caine, tall, strong, a loner but one she knows will protect her. Like I said this book was a pleasant surprise the whole plot was interesting. Riana/Caine find themselves in a world of violence where you have to fight for everything. The relationship between the MC is sexual right from the start no lovey dovey or poetic love here. Sex for protection, that's the deal but oh man the sexy times between these two were scorching hot. Even though they do develop feelings for each other it was never a sweet kinda love it was a more raw and intense relationship, one that was perfect for this story. Really enjoyed this book, with a unique plot and two great characters who are not just trying to survive but escape a planet that seems impossible. We are also introduced to Hall, the next character in book two. I'm looking forward to reading his story and finding more about him and his special abilities.❤

Let's not kid ourselves, this was a science fiction smutfestNot a ton of story. Short. To the point. Man protects woman in prison in exchange for sex. Things happen. There's a ton of sex while things don't happen. Then more things happen. Then there's a ton of sex. Not awful, just not my fav. Thank goodness that I actually finished a book after two dnfs in a row. Will I read another by this author? Probably not. Unless it's Hall's story. I'm curious. But that's it. I can do that much schtupping.

unique and steamy This book never had a sci-fi or fantasy feel to it. It just had a modern and realistic feel. While I found the majority of this to be erotic and mostly sexually based it still managed to have depth. I enjoyed the characters as well as the plot. It was short but had and had substance. I'll definitely check out more of this writer's work.

Apart from being too short (I would have loved to read more!!) I thoroughly enjoyed this little book. While 'Hold' is most definitely classified as erotica, this story actually had, well a story to go with all those deliciously naughty bits. There's no prologue to give us any background on the characters, instead Zannie Adams throws us directly into a futuristic sci-fi tale of a defenseless woman, Riana, being dropped off on a harsh prison planet to serve a term of life-sentence for a petty crime. A somewhat sympathetic guard suggests her best hope of survival is to select a "protector" amongst the inmates - which essentially amounts to an exchange of sex for food, shelter and safety - and she does... but instead of going with the peacock male who already has a harem of defenseless victimized females, she opts for the strong quiet guy with the dangerous vibe who accepts her "offer" and claims her as his own. Initially, Cain (Riana's protector) is gruff, cold and aloof - he doesn't even tell her his name until after they get it on a couple of times - but his feelings for her, if not outright clear, become at least more evident as the weeks pass. By the end of the story, however, there's no doubt as to how he feels about Riana and it's one of the most heartfelt declarations I've yet read. While told in a third person narrative, we only ever get Riana's point of view in 'Hold'. Normally, I love getting the hero's side of the story, but Adams withholding Cain's perspective from us is positively brilliant! It serves to emphasize the isolation and loneliness of Riana's bleak situation of imprisonment on a prison planet with little to no hope of escape, and it makes it all the more satisfying when we finally get insight into how Cain felt during that time.Under dire circumstances, Riana and Cain clung to each other to maintain not only their hold on sanity, but also their humanity and fell deeply in love as a consequence. When all was said and done, the naughty bits, which were smokin' hot by the way, were, IMO, just (really good) gravy!Cain (all those push-ups does a body good!):

4.25+ RATING- Most of the time I start reading a book I have certain expectations, either from reading other books by the author or reading reviews, etc. And sometimes I pick up a book with no expectations, not being familiar with the writer and I don’t know what to expect. I apparently placed Hold by Zannie Adams on a list of books I’d like to borrow and last night it randomly showed up on my Kindle. Having just finished up another book and still a couple hours before bed, I gave it a shot. I almost embarrassed to say I liked this book as much as I did. There’s no fancy writing or beautiful descriptive prose. It’s not a masterpiece of the next BIG book. What it is, is a relatively short story that doesn’t try too hard to tell too much of a story. It also doesn’t leave you feeling like you missed out on too much. I hate to say it..but it was just perfect for quick read before sleep. And its pretty sexy too!The story depicts Riana’s move to a far-away world as punishment for a “crime" she committed. As part of this new world, she must find a protector quickly so she is not taken, abused, and eventually killed in the terrible prison she is sent to. Shortly after arriving at the prison, she quickly relies on her instincts and picks out Cain. Their deal? He protects her and she in return has sex with him. A good bargain in the world she is living in and a simple premise for this short book to have. Their sexual relationship (because of their circumstances) begins immediately upon meeting and the reader sees how it develops during their confinement. There is something interesting even in this type or book to see how people use each other for base needs and how that can play out. I liked both characters and thought Cain was SEXY. He was resourceful and strong and eventually possessive. Definitely a man who can take care of his woman. And Riana and Cain together? Simply put, Riana and Cain together are hot, hot, hot. While I feel a little guilty about liking this book as much as I did I would definitely read a pick-up of their story if ever offered from where this book ended =)

3.5 stars!I liked the book and it had interesting concept. Both characters were interesting enough, and the book was easy to read. H was protective, kind and did his best to provide everything the h needed. Yes she had to have sex with him but she was into it anyway, and he never raped her. I mean I didn't feel like it was raping or felt uncomfortable while reading those scenes. h wasn't annoying and actually behaved really good in the circumstances that she ended up in. I consider her strong, because she did everything to survive. I have to say that I liked how author handled the whole sex in front of others. I didn't feel like they were watched by anyone and it didn't bother me at all. I found Hall intriguing and would really like to read his book( if he has one). Blurb covers the plot, so I won't talk about it much. The reason it got only 3.5 stars for me was in the chemistry of the main characters. I just didn't feel it, although there were lot's of sex scenes. I think I couldn't connect with their connection. They weren't hot together. I think I needed more time for that, but the book wasn't that long. This was probably more me, not the book case. I've never read anything by this author before, but she clearly has a way to write interesting story with likable characters.Epilogue was really good though and I thought they were adorable. I just wanted (view spoiler)[ babies. I know it sounds stupid but I love some HEA with bunch of babies. Especially I was surprised she didn't get pregnant there with all unprotected sex they had :D (hide spoiler)]Safety gang:(view spoiler)[ h was celibate(2 years) and H was as well( one year). Both of them had casual hook ups before and there was not much talk about their past. He wasn't a man-whore. No OW/OM drama at all. (hide spoiler)]

5 "hot" Stars!! God! Finally a 5 starer 😥 I mean i really hate it when i could'nt find a 4 or 5 star read and specially now when it's my holidays and all i want to do is READ❤ Ok! So it was my first or may be second sci-fiction romance and suprisingly i loved it! Mostly i prefer contemporary or dark erotics but this book did wonders on me with it's different storyline and approach with MC's relationship.I don't like when my couple start their relation with just sex thats why i even avoid those one-night stand books but suprisingly with this book i would'nt take it any other way! The story stars with h being convicted on Hold which is a prison planet. She is afraid and vulnerable. But the officer who is dumping her on the planet helps her by informing about Hold's way and system! A little act of kindness you can call it .He tells her to find the most Powerful guy and take his protection in return of her body. He tells her that she might be stuck with humans but they don't function like it. They all are basically animals. They Fuck. Eat and Sleep. So for timid girls like her Mating is the only option. She is disgusted with the thought of using her body like this but then of course survival is important! The Hold's Alpha Thorn shows interest in her but she knows that Thorn is not the right guy for her and rejects him. Thorn obviously feel offended and starts to attack her just then our H enters in and rescue our h and from there the main story starts. How Cain helps her ?, How their relation works ?and how they escape? But yeah there was too much sex at one point which i really did'nt mind that much but sure at one point it kind of irritated me! I really loved the whole book but the ending was kind of abrupt. i felt like i missed something. The Author could def. write more about them but still i was so happy with the book❤ Good and Worth book def. Some specific things which i would like to know in a book--- may contain spoiler---No cheating but there was a rape attempt on heroine and that officer who helped her also touches her intimate areas for regular check up and heroine provokes him to touch because she wanted to distract him for their escape plan! It was a prison so there was no privacy . Everybody saw them having sex! There was right amount of possessiveness and jealous moments ( its only me i know😂)No love triangle.

Wow, I've been on a run of really good books and this one is right up there, just ignore the cover. In this future you are sent to prison for life for everything from trespassing to murder. Riana is sent because although she had permission to perform an archeological dig, she went outside the authorized area. She's told when she gets to the prison, where it's pretty much a dumping ground where the prisoners have control of their cells that she should find the strongest man she can and have him take care of her. She sees Cain as they circle before she taken off the carrier and thinks of all the animals he looks the most sane. They start out as companions for convenience and safety and then start to develop feelings for each other. Now they have to get out. Great book, lots of terrors and small portions when there is kindness. I would definitely recommend this book.

I'm changing this to a 2.5 stars because apparently I read a nasty version and I just can't get that part out of my I'll do another review when I read the better edition!☺ Yay !!!this was so much better! 4.5 stars. I really enjoy this. This edition was not too much different from that terrible bad edition I read. The difference was Hall and that one damn disgusting scence with Davis which made a whole lot of difference to the book and Rianas character ☺ I'm so happy I wash all the bad out from my eyes and was replaced with this. I will be waiting to read about Hall and maybe more with Cain and Riana and babies!

Excellent Novella! FANtasTIC erotica element! Hits the ground running and does not taper off. Wonderful hero! In my head I kept seeing Vin Diesel as Riddick from the hellfire prison planet Hellion.Riana was a great heroine, which is to say she didn't annoy me.Stayed up late to finish it and loved the HEA with warm fuzzies.Definitely going to recomend and re-read this one.

SIGH...this was was so good. There was actually plot to go with the erotica. I love the originality of the this story which is technically sci-fi romance/ erotica but didn't come off as one with science/ alien heavy details. Great. 2018-11-24 18:17

It was okay but I was somewhat disappointed. The sci fi element was not very strong. There was a lot of sex and I'm not against sex scenes in their place but here they overwhelmed the story. I think the author missed the boat on making the hold so dark. It was so stark and bare down there that there wasn't much for our hero and heroine to do so the story lacked any real action plot. I did like the realism of the hero going ahead and "doing" the heroine right off the bat instead of being some noble paladin who protected the heroine but left her "pure."I would have preferred to see much more world building and interaction between the hero and heroine and other characters. Lacking that interaction, maybe the hero shouldn't have been quite so stoic and alone. No witty repartee here. Finally the author made a mistake that points to the author writing erotica set in space rather than writing sci fi romance. When a character states they live on the outer edge of thus and such galaxy and it's not the Milky Way you know they've failed to grasp the vastness of space and are stretching the plausibilities of space travel beyond reason. Sci fi feels more realistic and acceptable if you speak of star systems not galaxies. Otherwise you ought to spend some time showing me how such outrageously far places are reached.

Exactly as advertised! Hot intergalactic hetero prison sex smut with an HEA; on the food pyramid this would be a doughnut.Mmmmm, doughnut.I found this little gem through a Listopia I've voted on previously. does not mean I agree with all the books on here. I am not a Laurran Dohner fan. Seriously, if there were three of me one of them would be her troll. Also the number three book on that list seems to be a erotica version of District 9, which makes me want to vomit, but girls with mermen fetishes should throw no electronic stones. But that's not the point of this review. The point is to give Claire Kent a high five and say I just bought the next two in this series.*update* that was a rash and regretful decision. Don't make my mistake.

I read this a long time ago .... it was just as good even though I have the original, not the updated version. I really liked this story. What do you do if you are innocent but sent to prison? Not just any prison but one on a hostile world and it's underwater. I would freak out because I have claustrophobia. I loved how the h was brave enough to do whatever it would take her to survive. She chose well! Cain is an Alpha animal and a great protector. I would recommend this to anyone who loves a strong, sexy hero and a spunky heroine.

We all have some books that we love and even if we are aware they are not perfect, we mark them as favorite. For me, this is one of those books.I read it years ago and it sticks with me, and now I reread it, and I love it still. I don't want to recommend it because it's not for everybody. If you think its sounds interesting, read it. There isn't much going on. It's erotic, and not very romantic till the end. They in prisons and they fuck,... and I love it!!!

I enjoyed this and found it unexpectedly sweet considering the plot. I liked Riana and totally understood her behavior in the Hold. I also liked Cain and understood him as well. Although him being so closed off and it being only her POV made it a little hard to connect to him. I thought the Epilogue was touching and showed that there are after-effects to their experience. Not so sure about Hall's book but I would have loved to have seen more of Riana and Cain's life in the future.
