Rebecca Hughes and her brother Shane were kidnapped fifteen years ago. Rebecca escaped, but Shane was never seen again. When she is attacked by somebody she is certain is her kidnapper, she turns to help from Brody Fields, her high school sweetheart, whose heart she broke. New leads about Shane begin to surface, and she and Brody follow them, all the while wondering how their relationship can work, because Rebecca is destined to return to Chicago once it is all over.A pretty dreary experience! Very repetitive, the mystery is pretty thin, and the climax is a total fizzler. Rebecca is a bit of pain, declaring "It's all my fault!" more times than I could count. Even high school friends not keeping in touch more often is her fault, apparently. I also never fully understood what was keeping Brody and Rebecca apart, other than her desire to return to Chicago once, or if, her brother was found. They never once take a moment to sit down to actually discuss why things can't work out between them. They just muse internally, endlessly, about the supposed barricades, which is just ridiculous. I don't know how they expect to stay together after this book is over if they can never actually communicate OUT LOUD with one another, for heaven's sake! One simple conversation could have brought all of that out into the open. The ending did bring a tear to my eye, as it was a nice happy ending (and I'm not spoiling anything by saying there's a happy ending), but there's not enough of a thrilling, twisty plot leading up to it, and the two main characters just didn't seem to behave like real people would when it came to figuring out their relationship.

YES! Finally a new Western romantic suspense from one of my favorite ladies, Barb Han.Abducted when she was barely a teen, Rebecca Hughes still lives in fear over a decade later. Her brother was taken on that day as well and he wasn't as lucky as she. So much has happened since that awful event and Rebecca has had a whole lot on her shoulders. After escaping her hometown after graduation, she never looked back, leaving behind friends and family. When her mother becomes ill, Rebecca returns home to take care of her since her parents divorced after their son's kidnapping. She's been home for some time now, but can't seem to face the people who meant a lot to her in the past, namely Brody Fields, who was her best friend and her first kiss.Rancher, Brody Fields has been a mainstay in Mason Ridge and still after all these years, thinks about Rebecca Hughes. When he receives a frantic phone call from her after fifteen years, he knows that seeing her again won't be easy. Rebecca is in danger again as it seems that the kidnapper has returns to finish the job the job he began. Rebecca knows deep down that her brother is still alive somewhere and she has never given up hope and Brody wants to help her keep that hope alive. He also wants to protect his first love from any danger that threatens her. Both Brody and Rebecca know that being in close quarters with one another is going to be tough since neither hs gotten over the feelings they had for one another in their youth. Now their attraction sizzles like it never has before and keeping each other at a distance is really not working out. Brody feels that once all is said and done, Rebecca will run again and that just won't do. Can he trust her to not break his heart again? Can she open her heart to the only man who ever really mattered? Well, you'll jut have to grab TEXAS PREY by Barb Han to find out.TEXAS PREY, the first in the Mason Ridge series by the very talented, Barb Han is a fast paced and wonderfully scripted tale. Her characters are interesting and have depth, they are real and emotional. This story, teeming with hope is just the sort of read this reader is looking for. TEXAS PREY had me biting my nails and then finally succombing to tears. I thought I was going to get away without those tears, how silly was I? ~KIMBERLY~

Texas Prey by Barbara Han is an action packed mystery. The opening scene will capture your attention. Rebecca and her brother where kidnaped 15 years ago. She was able to get away but they have not seen her brother since. Her family has been torn apart. Great inside look at how the survivor handles or doesn’t handle the pressure, the guilt and trying to enter back into a normal life. Rebecca thinks the kidnapper is back to get her however the police do not believe her and think she is paranoid. The only person she feels she can ask for help is Brody even though she broke his heart when she left him all those years ago. Brody is all grown up now. He has served in an elite military branch. He is now returned home and is running his ranch to heal/ rehabilitate horses. Rebecca, Brody and some friends work to solve the mystery of who took Shane. There are several characters in the book I would enjoy reading their story so I am really looking forward to this series. i received a copy through NetGalley for an honest review. Barb Han's work is amazing. First time reading from this author who's writing is just magnificent for sure I will be reading more book by Barb Han. This novel kept on the edge with all the action, thrills it had. I wasn't able to put the book down till I was finished. A great read with an interesting narrative that is hard to put down.

This was a excellent book. Rebecca and her little brother were kidnapped 15 years ago. Rebecca managed to get away, hoping to bring back help, and save her brother. She never saw him again after that night. The police, and FBI had given up hope of ever finding Shane. Rebecca never gave up hope. She was always looking for him. Now she is the target. Brody was her boyfriend when that happened. After her brother was kidnapped, Rebecca shut down. They broke up, because Rebecca didn't want to hurt him. He never stopped caring for Rebecca. When he finds out she is a target, he steps in to be her body guard. I love second chance romance books. The chemistry is still there. The two work together to find her brother. I want spoil the book for you. I did enjoy the suspense, action, and romance.

*ARC provided by Publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review *Texas Prey is the first book in Barb Han's new Mason Ridge series for Harlequin Intrigue and I have to say, I enjoyed it a lot. It's well-written and from the moment it starts, readers are given a glimpse into what life must have been like for Rebecca Hughes following the abduction of her and her younger brother, Shane, fifteen years ago. To be the one who found freedom but not have closure, to always be looking over her shoulder, wondering who, wondering where, wondering why…what a horrible way to live, with fear so oppressing even a mundane trip to the grocery store brings about a frightening case of nerves. This book tackled a worst nightmare scenario for me. To be so helpless but also so determined to find answers, to find hope, to find peace. That kind of fear and helplessness weighs on a person for sure, and makes them jump to conclusions they might not otherwise have jumped to. But unlike the Sheriff's department, Brody Fields can't write off Rebecca's fears so easily. He knows the toll the kidnapping took on her, and if he can help her this time, he'll do it gladly. Except how can he be certain what Rebecca fears and thinks is true when he's dealing with a woman still tormented by the kidnapping in her past?I liked this book. It was a good read, though parts of it did feel a bit rushed and felt like they needed a little more fleshing out or information added in. But once the story picked up in chapter four, things began to mesh pretty well.I really liked Rebecca and hurt for all she went through and how she'd lived her life trapped in the aftermath of the past. I also liked Brody, and their whole group of friends who intrigued and fascinated me. Overall, Texas Prey proved a good read, and a good start to the Mason Ridge series. I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

The story takes off with an adrenaline spike, setting up the scene what Rebecca is against of when trying to solve the fifteen year old kidnapping. She asks help from Brody, her high school sweetheart, she left behind. The investigation of the old crime is tedious, with no real leads, or anything solid to pursue. Rebecca's desperation for any lead is heartbreaking, her emotions are raw with every disappointment they face.I liked how the old high school friends were getting together again, and forming new relationships as adults. They were all willing to help Rebecca, and stood by her during this difficult time. The friends also saw that the attraction between Rebecca and Brody was back, hotter than ever, and were giving their opinions about it, since they still remembered how broken Brody was after the last break up. And that break up is also something Brody hangs on to, holding back, not sure if he could trust Rebecca again. Even after a steamy love scene, Brody still questions their feelings and Rebecca's loyalty. The story doesn't consist much action, mostly investigation, mixed with few short peaks of danger and fear. It is interesting to see, how little pieces of information all finally fit together like the pieces of a puzzle. Most of the intensity came from the tension between Rebecca and Brody, as they are trying to figure out their relationship as adults. This is a first installment of a series, where a group of high school friends is introduced, as they come together as adults, to help Rebecca and Brody to solve the old crime. Lots of characters, little clues to solve the crime, and a second chance romance, where danger and fear have been constantly present in Rebecca's mind, until she finds peace of mind in Brody's arms.An interesting first installment of the series, that awakens curiosity to what more is to come~ Four Spoons

There's nothing worse than writing a not-great review and coming here to paste it in and realizing you're the first review. But, here we go:HQ Intrigue? WOO HOO! Rom Suspense? WOO HOO! Second Chance Romance? WOO HOO? Hot Texans? WOO HOO! This book? No woo hoo :(I was excited to get this and dove in looking forward to a great read. Unfortunately, this didn't work for me for several reasons. The first (and biggest) reason for me is that the action did not work. It always felt like it came out of no where and then was BAM over. The first action scene (which I hesitate to call it that) happened so quickly that I wasn't even sure it was an action scene. At first I thought the heroine was paranoid and delusional (which could be supported) and that nothing had really happened. The next action scene barely made sense as well, but at least it proved that something was really going on.The next thing that didn't work for me was the way the hero clung to their teenage breakup and his mother leaving as PROOF!!!! that the heroine was just like his mother and couldn't be trusted and never loved him. DUDE, you were teenagers who went thru a traumatic event. Seriously? You're smarter than that, don't make me slap you.The RS in this feels, well, contrived is the word that kept popping to mind. It felt like the romance and the suspense were written separately and then shoved together.Sadly, as a huge RS and Intrigue fan I was disappointed in this book. For how short it is I should have read it in a night. It took 4 days to push myself through to the ending (which I won't share.)Hopefully this is a YMMV review, but I'm going to go grab another RS and cleanse my palate. *review based on netgalley copy*

I received this book free from Net Galley in exchange for an honest reviewRebecca Hughes and Brody Fields were young and in love when Rebecca and her brother were kidnapped. Rebecca was able to escape but her brother was never found. Rebecca was never able to get past the incident. So, in spite of her love for Brody, she left town after graduation and never returned. Now, Rebecca has returned because she believes the kidnapper is back and trying to kill her. She wants Brody to be her bodyguard and to help her capture the man. Brody apprehensively agrees. However he vows he will not allow Rebecca to break his heart again.Unfortunately that is all I can reveal without spoiling the story. However, as you read the book, you will discover that there are a lot of questions that need to be answered. And this needs to be done while Rebecca and Brodie hunt for the “alleged” kidnapper and somehow manage to stay alive.I would like to compliment this author because this book is written on the level and proportions of a mainstream book. Often while I was reading I forgot that this was a Harlequin Intrigue. This book has realistic characters-with both positive and negative characteristics. Also, the plot is very well-developed with some twists and turns. I highly recommend this book. It is a fast read with a fascinating plot that kept me intrigued from the beginning to the very end. Even though this is the first book in a series, it has a beginning and an ending and can very easily stand alone. This is a clean book with no graphic sex.

3 STARSI liked it, but thought it needed more details. Like they edited to much of the story out. I also wanted more details on the ending scenes. Overall the story worked. It introduced a lot of characters that I think will be in future stories about Mason Ridge.Rebecca Hughes is attacked in a grocery parking lot. The cops don't listen to her or even go out to the scene. They believe she is crying wolf.Rebecca was kidnapped long ago with her younger brother Shane who was seven. Rebecca got away, but nothing was ever found of her brother. Rebecca is a DJ at night. The kidnapping tore her family apart.Rebecca is scared. She turns to someone who was always there in the past. Brody Fields.Brody Fields loved Rebecca in the past but when she broke with him in high school it really hurt him. He now is a rancher but was in the military after high school. When Rebecca calls him for help he shows up.Brody, Rebecca and friends were out playing that night when they were not supposed to be. When Rebecca's younger brother followed her. There were things that night that they did not tell the police then. They did not think it was important.Lots of drama, some action, lots of characters and love scenes. Brody and Rebecca try to keep there distance from each other.I think this is one story that need to be a lot longer to tell it right but thats only my opinion. I want to read the next Mason Ridge and see what happens next.I was given this ebook from Harlequin and Net Galley. In return I agreed to give a honest review of Texas Prey.

Rebacca as a child was kidnapped as well was her brother only she was able to get away. Its been 15 years and she still relives the past and is not over the fact that her brother could just be gone. But when a strange coincidence happens on the 15th year to the day of the kidnapping she was had the strange sense that he was back. The kidnapper was back to finish was started and she no longer feels safe. Brody an old flame of Rabecca's becomes her body guard and slowly together they piece together the mystery of brother and find who is after her. Great story, I loved that the mystery kept things interesting. I loved that this book wasn't all focused on the romance making the mystery of her brother and kidnapper a background thing... Do you know what I mean? There are many books that I've come across with the same theme at the story but the mystery fades to the background once the romance start leaving the readers to question what happened and how everything did solve. I loved the story line. I loved that there was so much going on to keep the readers interested and hook. Loved the ended you might end up getting choked up after reading the epilogue. (Just a warning) Overall I loved this story.

What a great start to a new series!! Barb Han definitely knows how to do intrigue. Keeps you hanging and needing to know what happens next! Only now coming back to take care of her mother who is sick, the memoirs flow. And it looks like the man responsible is back in town and after her. Brody and Rebecca were high school swerthearts until she left him high and dry. But she is back now, in danger and needing his help. He has to help her, knowing she is in danger. But he needs to keep his heart whole. As they get closer and closer to finding the kidnapper and danger is all around them, their past collides with their present and they once again become entwined, can Brody keep his objectivity or will he once again be left heartbroken. And will Rebecca finally find peace and a reason to stay this time or will she leave as she did before?

Really enjoyed this book! It keeps you guessing until the end of who the kidnapper is.Rebecca Hughes has come back to town after years away because her Mom isn't doing well. Strange things start happening and she gets spooked and calls her old boyfriend Brody Fields who she heard had just gotten back to town too. She knows if anyone can keep her safe, it's Brody. When Rebecca was 12 and her little brother Shane was 7, they were abducted in the night. Rebecca escaped a day and a half later, but Shane was never found. Now that the 15th anniversary has rolled around, she thinks the kidnapper is back to get her again.Brody gathers the old school gang that they hung out with and gets them to help fit some puzzle pieces together from that night and general time frame to see if they missed anything. They follow a few leads and figure out who it was. But will they be able to catch him? And is Shane still out there somewhere or was he killed years ago?
