I always thought I knew what the army would be like... Just like everyone else I watched the recruiting ads on TV with a sense of nervous anticipation. It must be something about being a guy - you see guys running and gunning, parachuting out of planes and fast roping out of helicopters. The music is soaring and you feel the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. You feeI always thought I knew what the army would be like... Just like everyone else I watched the recruiting ads on TV with a sense of nervous anticipation. It must be something about being a guy - you see guys running and gunning, parachuting out of planes and fast roping out of helicopters. The music is soaring and you feel the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. You feel the testosterone pumping through you and almost hyperventilate at how awesome it must be to do all of that. The reality of being in the army is very different from what you see on the recruiting ads. It's different from all the war movies you've ever seen. Hell, it's completely different to anything you think it's going to be. If you've ever wondered what it's like to fire a machine gun, navigate in the middle of the night or to command troops, you'll find out right here. From recruit training all the way through to becoming an instructor in the world of intelligence, Army Jerks is a first hand account of everything your typical military member goes through during their time in service, and it's far more interesting than anything you'll see in a movie. This is the good, the bad and the ugly - from the camaraderie, the accomplishment and the satisfaction of being a soldier to getting punished and screwed over by commanders and facing military injustice. Army Jerks offers a no bullshit, behind the curtain look into what really happens day to day in the military. ...

After 10 years in the ARA as a Gunner and OpSup I recommend this book to anyone looking to enlist, it is a far more accurate portrayal of Army life than recruiting will give you. Having served in 2 Corps I can tell you that for me at least this is an accurate account of the way the Army really is I would say at times its a little bit forgiving.

A must read for anyone thinking of joining the Australian military.. I appreciate author's honesty and effort not to sugarcoat many issues within the army.. It was a great and interesting read. Nevertheless, I wish that the author would had dedicated some space in the book to talk about the impacts of his military career on his personal life with his girlfriend, eventually wife, family etc..
