Swords versus Tanks Episode 1 is completely bonkers. In a good way. From the cover I was expecting something like "World War I tank regiment blunders through time to the battle of Agincourt." What I got was "alternate reality time travel fantasy military SF with a side of H.G. Wells." It was a little disorienting at first - where the heck is Dacre? - but the action moves so fast you don't have time to worry about details like geography or "Wait, was that a unicorn?". Alternate reality Communists of the "Egality" invade their own medieval past and find the downtime feudal warriors are more than a match for their tanks, having some secret weapons of their own that I won't spoil here. Page delivers his patented "you are there" depictions of knightly swordplay and does an equally good job of putting the reader inside the head of a tank commander and crew facing the impossible. It all leads up to what the cover promises - a set piece armor battle of the ages: Knights against machine guns! Swords versus tanks!Fair warning: the story ends of something of a cliffhanger. I know some people don't like that. As a lover of old-time serials, I don't care...I just want the next episode! So will you.

Pulpy fun, but there's a strong undercurrent of cynicism about human nature too. The two mix together to create an atmosphere of cruel nihilism that'll keep me from rushing out to read the next installment. Fun enough to eventually finish, but it's not anywhere near the top of my list.

Very entertaining. 1 star down because I don't understand why this is being released as a bunch of very short books rather than just one decent length one. Honestly I read most of this in two 15 tube journeys.
