Reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock::I give this book 4fangs...I loved this story. It has a lost elf, a found dragon, magic, and a family longed for. The only thing I really didn’t like about this story is it started out too fast. There was absolutely no lead up to the action. There was no history about why Mia was trapped on earth, how Magnus came to her, or how Kort followed him there. It just started out oh wow dragons are real and we have to have sex to get home to Chalvaren. There were a lot of questions left unanswered but once we get to Chalvaren the imagery is fantastic. The author has a wonderful descriptive ability. The dragons are stunning and the battles won and lost are very well written. No spoilers but the resolution of the book was very well done, it did not feel rushed or like the author didn’t really care. Overall I think that there could have been more what I call filler, which is to say that we needed to know more about Mia’s family, the history between them and the royal family, how they fled to earth, and why they really didn’t tell Mia about what she might face if she ever got back. It was a really good book, I loved every minute of the adventure that a in there. The dragons, their history and the conflict were all very well written. In all honesty I’m hoping for a sequel to see how the world plays out next.-nik

A world ruled by the King and Queen with flying dragons and magic, this story has all the makings of a fairy tale; however, Chalvaren Rising is not your typical fairytale. This world in made up of elves. The dragons’ powers are of the elements of their origin, Earth, wind, fire, and water.  Deities worshipped are “the gods” and Varick. Auras tell the true intentions of all who live in Chalvaren, but only to the elves gifted with the ability to see them. The adventure begins when Lucan, the kingdoms wizard, sends the prince, Kort, to Earth to recover a stolen dragon egg. I’ll get to why someone would want to steal a dragon’s egg soon. While on earth, the egg hatches and leads the prince to Mia, an orphaned elf, alone in a world in which she doesn’t belong.  This is when the romance starts. The prince brings Mia back to Chalvaren to discover that her father’s stories have become reality right before her eyes. ..and it’s amazing. We soon learn that Mia’s father fled to Earth from Chalvaren and this is where Mia belongs. She no longer has to hide her pointy ears in Chalvaren, they’re all elves! She knows a little about the culture from her father’s tales, but there are many unanswered questions. They quickly learn, the egg Kort was sent to save is a spirit dragon, the most magical of all dragons, the first in Chalvaren. Given the name Magnus, the baby dragon lead Kort to Mia because she holds the dragonstone. This is the only dragonstone in existence and holds the most extreme amount of power known to anyone. This gives Mia a great responsibility but it also puts her in grave danger.Mia quickly learns there can’t be good without bad, as the mysteries of her father’s time in Chalvaren, and the explanations for his desertion of Chalvaren, slowly unfold. The people of Chalvaren, especially Kort, do anything to protect her from the evil elf, Isa. She is plotting to rule the kingdoms by strengthening her black magic with stolen dragon eggs. Isa is also Mia’s only living relative. Nothing can go wrong there, right? And this is just the first 8 chapters! I can’t tell you much more without spoiling it for future readers but I can tell you, you will not be disappointed. The action never stops. While reading, there were several times I thought I knew what would happen and how, and I was surprised every time; this book is full of twists. The people you would never expect join the side of black magic, do, and the heroes are the least expected characters, as well. The only thing that would be better is if dragons could talk… ;-)This book is huge, but it’s has to be to hold all the suspense, action, mystery, magic, romance, fantasy and entertainment. Paula Millhouse introduces the wonderful characters perfectly, and though the book is VERY long, all the information given is relevant to the story, which is a rare find lately. The dialog between the characters is brilliantly real. We can hear the love, hate, admiration, desire, curiosity, and sarcasm, just to name a few, in the conversations. We are let into the characters personal thoughts and background just enough to understand their actions at the time, and continue to learn more as needed. The imagery is breathtaking. My mind was filled with a world where the grass is as green as the hills in Ireland, and the colors are brighter than the most beautiful fairyland Disney could ever create. I could easily see this book becoming a trilogy of breathtaking movies. The fantasyland will make a perfect movie for kids and adults. After all “anything’s possible when magic and dragons are combined.”I apologize for such a long review. This book is too magically awesome to express in a review. You have to read it yourself to understand. It is a huge novel but it’s filled with so much action you will get through it quicker than you can imagine.I give this book 5 stars, I absolutely LOVED it! Paula Millhouse has me hooked! Chalvaren Rising is an epically brilliant novel that expands on Mia's past, present and future which Paula Millhouse began telling in her exciting prequel Dragonstone. With Magnus the dragon, now hatched and bonded to Mia the two need to work together to strengthen their connection in order to bring the prophesy into full force. But working together is harder than they could have forseen, with many trials and hardships ahead of them that they need to overcome. This does not mean that they don't have a fun time trying! Kort, as a dragon trainer, understands that training new dragon riders and dragons to work together can be challenging but each pair need different tacks in order to catch onto the basics and build on from there - with Mia and Mangus it's all new territory because Mangus can talk, voice his opinions, thoughts and feelings, so making training time fun is just what they need!Kort and Mia's relationship would be known as "it's complicated" as although she is certain about her feelings for him, she is unsure whether she should stay with him at the palace as she feels her presence there is in part causing problems. Learning about her past, although has answered many questions that have been burning in her mind and teasing her curiosity since a child, have not fully yielded the answers that she expected or could have ever wanted. The great evil that the kingdom is facing is someone known to her family well. Nothing could prepare her for the secrets that have been kept from her that are brought into the light nor the dangers that they put not only everyone she loves in but also the kingdom, people will die because of her and because of this she wonders whether it's better if she leaves Kort and the palace to give everyone a chance to survive.Paula Millhouse's writing is vivid and compelling. Her ability to capture the emotions and individual character's humour, and then to deliver it in such a successful way had me up late into the night, I just couldn't put Chalvaren Rising down! Nothing about this book feels forced it flows freely and smoothly - a truly amazing read! I can't wait to read the next in the series.5***** Stars

Wow! Well, things are a little crazy in Chalvaren. When Kort, Magnus, and Mia land back home from the doom in the human world, things hit the fan. Prince Kort will do anything to keep Mia with him, he knows he needs her by his side. Mia feels a major connection to Kort but she has so much to learn and somethings he hides things so she has doubts. Magnus just wants to be near Mia. He's bonded to her. And they all have a lot to learn, not just from each other, but from those around them. And the twists that will blow your mind. Mia, who is clueless to so much in Chalvaren, grows into a beautiful heroine, dragon rider and princess. She had doubts and a lot of bumps along the road, but she is a flawless character. She was lonely and just wanted to belong, and wanted a family since she lost hers. She didn't even have real friends other than a human child where she was. As she learns things, she becomes confident and loyal and brave. She is the key to it all. She uses her curiosity to learn so much. I loved her bond with Magnus and I really liked her relationship with Prince Kort. Prince Kort had to learn that he cannot control everything. He needs to let go and let others. He also had to learn that he needed to support Mia without over powers her with dominance. He helped her become her better self in the end, but he's learning how to grovel LOL Yeah that was hard for him. And this prophecy that is being held over their heads is a little crazy. Magnus is growing into a magnificent creature of awe. I loved all the dragons. They are fascinating and so well done and it was magnificent. And the bad guy, well, sometimes you just can't comprehend how much loss and grief can make you go off the deep end. This story is full of love and action and romance and hope. The world building is beautiful, the dragon creations are flawless. And I am absolutely a fan! I must have the next book to see where it can go, and no worries, no major cliff hangers or anything like that. I LOVED IT! 5 MAGICAL DRAGON PAWS!

My Review: The heavy open detail left in this book makes me wonder if its a part of a series. There is much information that could have been explored in further detail. I did enjoy the dragon rider part and the romance which was fantastic. I really liked Mia and Elias together. I had much to like about Mia, you can relate to her, you can empathize with her struggles and her situation because of her history and where she comes from. I respected the way Elias embraced her strength as a person and as a woman. She stood brave in her home world and that's something you can get behind. Mia wasn't a person that shied away from her strength, and she didn't fear taking on her new position. I like authors that aren't afraid to embrace strong female leads. Chalvaren Rising is a fantastic story full of wonderful fantasy in a big world the author can explore and develop in later installments if she chooses to do so. Kort, the elven prince, brings Mia back to her birth land in the hopes of marrying her. Once they are back in his kingdom, Mia becomes a dragon rider. This means that the first step of the prophecy is unfolding. Mia is destined to become the hero of the prophecy who is destined to save her kingdom and defeat an evil sorcerer. She finds that the evil sorcerer is connected to her. Can Mia help make this ancient prophecy come to fruition? Mia is a strong and admirable heroine. I felt sorry for her in the beginning because she was lonely and abandoned until Kort came along. At first, she seemed uncertain about her destiny, but later on she grows more confident. I also like how Mia was curious about the kingdom of Chalvaren and that she asks questions about it. I also loved her relationship with Kort. It was Kort who gives her courage and who persuades her to come back home. There were some moments where I thought they were very insecure in their feelings, for they were prone to jealousy. Other than that, I thought that their relationship was steady and mature, for without the other, they would not have succeeded. Overall, this story is about love, choices, redemption, and hope. The message of the story is that love conquers all. The story had a slow beginning, but eventually it picked up. I thought Chalvaren was a well built world, for the author gave us a lot of information about her world. I also loved all her characters. I liked how she gave us an interesting villain. The ending was very sweet with a happily ever after feel. I advise you to read her first novel, Dragonstone before you read Chalvaren Rising. This is because this was the only novel I read in the series so I was a little lost in the beginning. I recommend this to anyone who loves epic fantasy with dragons and a touching love story.(This book was given to me as part of a blog tour in exchange for an honest review.)

Disclaimer: I received as an APC (author provided copy) courtesy of the author in exchange for an honest reviewHaving read Dragonstone, the prequel to Chalvaren Rising, I was all ready to dig into this book and fall in love again with these characters. The beginning of Chalvaren Rising was superb, I couldn't stop reading, but it wasn't until I got to all the doubts that Mia had, and the highhandedness of Kort that I found myself rolling my eyes in frustration. I understood that any relationship that travels across worlds is bound to have some problems and adjustment periods but it was like that strong willed Mia I'd read about in Dragonstone took vacations and she would allow Kort to have her running in the other direction instead of standing firm and fighting. The Mia that was willing to sacrifice her happiness for Kort and Mangus when she didn't think she would make it through the portal, I seriously missed her at crucial moments of this story. The Kort who admired Mia's strength, especially against him, when they first met, was again sorely missed when they finally got to Chalvaren. Kurt's desire to protect Mia by not telling her all that she needed to know, especially once it was revealed how important she would become to the future of Chalvaren, ironically still left Mia unprotected. Mia not fully understanding who she was up against in her enemy, her aunt, she did some very foolish things. If the promise of what was shown us in Dragonstone was revealed in Chalvaren Rising I would be one happy camper, but since I felt like I was let down and that the story didn't reach it's potential I had to rate this book a 3 out of 5.

Different worlds, dragons, elves, evil yet misguided women - what more could you ask for? Now, this is the first 'full' book in the Kingdom of Chalvaren series, although there is the novella in which our two main characters meet. What made this book interesting for me is that they were already 'together' right at the start. So although I knew that things had moved quickly in the prequel, it actually made for fantastic reading as the two of them got to know each other and explored their feelings for each other. Now trust me when I say those feelings run hot! Their relationship has the normal ups, downs and misunderstandings that occur when two people are trying to live together and that made for excellent reading. Throw in a world in chaos, with crazy woman trying to resurrect the dead along with killing the dragons, you have an action-packed world, full of character and heart. With a smooth, steady pace and excitement on every page, this is a wonderful Fantasy Action Romance. I know that there are two books in this series but I am really hoping for more. I loved the world of Chalvaren and hope to see more of it, and the dragons, in the future. Highly recommended for all fans of Fantasy!* I received this book from the author in return for a fair and honest review. *MerissaArchaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!

I was given an advanced reader copy for an honest review.I really enjoyed this story. I loved that Mia and Kort’s love builds throughout the story. They are believable characters that have to fight their inner demons along with trying to stop an evil elf from destroying Chalvaren.Isa is the villain and she is pure evil with real motivation. I loved being in her demented mind.My favorite was Magnus the dragon who is sensitive and funny. He’s a wonderful character that made we want a dragon of my own. This story pulled me into the world of Chalvaren. I felt I was right there flying beside them. I rooted for Mia and Kort while sitting on the edge of my seat. A definite page turner until the end.Overall Chalvaren Rising was a wonderfully written love story with lots of action and adventure. I recommend this story to people who love fantasy and romance.

A wonderfully written and steamy fantasy romance! I'm not normally a fantasy reader, but this book drew me in with the excellent writing. Mia and Kort have a loving and respectful relationship. It's also intensely HOT. I loved that the sex scenes were sensual and not crude or crass:"The erotic huskiness of his voice triggered something primal in her exhausted mind. There was only this, only this handsome, hulking man hovering naked in front of and above her, working her into a frenzy of emotion and ecstasy. Her violet aura danced across her skin and mingled with his blue one, a visual confirmation of their bond."*fans self*Check this one out if you're interested in a sexy fantasy tale.

Dragons and elves is a book I must read. This dragon talks and made me laugh so much. This is a book, I will read again. I really enjoy this written and steamy fantasy romance. The action in this book never stops. It is full of twists. There are characters the readers will think they know and you will be talking to your book. I found it entertaining, with mystery and magic. Yes, there is black magic too. The villain has a lot motivation and I loves her mind. This is a read for people who love fantasy and romance.

I really enjoyed this second story! Mia and Kort are back with of course DRAGONS!!! I really did like that Mia was learning what she can do and a lot about where she is now plus there's a hot prince. However there was a little too much filler and there where times I found myself scanning, not always but once or twice for sure. Overall a little verbose but fun. I received a free copy of this book from the author for my honest review.

If you like a fantasy world, elves, and dragons, give this one a try. But start with the short story, Dragonstone, first. A fun story in itself, and it might help ease a little confusion at the beginning of this book.

Spirit connects every living thing, 10 PRECIOUS DRAGONLETSand so he will connect and lead the elementals as prophesied. We must every one of us put ourselves in danger if we are the one who holds the key to salvation. love is worth fighting for despite all the odds we’re facing. DRAGONS & MAGIC & ELVES, OH MY!!! What a truly MAGNELFICENT book!!! Right from the cover I was drawn in, but that was nothing compared to just how blown away I was by the story itself! I was instantly captivated and caught in its magical spell from beginning to long after I reached The End!! I was swept away into another time & place right along with Mia, a place that is both magical, beautiful and scary! In fact I think that Paula herself said it best “Theirs was an instant connection, an inescapable union of body, soul and sorcery” EXACTLY my feelings and connection to this book, its characters of every species, the world, the series, just ALL OF IT!! This series is as precious & as beautiful & as magical & as rare as the Dragonstone itself!! In fact I wonder if Mia, Kort, Magnus, and the rest of Team Castle Elias cast a protection spell to end all spells that turned the precious Dragonstone into this epic & MAGNUSIFICENT book! It truly is that ABSO-ELFING-LUTELY priceless! There are so many - too many to count or list even - WINGTASTIC, amazing, magical parts to this story, but in my opinion, the best part (besides the entire story!) is the dragons! I ABSO-ROARING-LUTELY love everything about them! Their different & individual abilities, their personalities, or dragonalities I should say, just EVERYTHING!! Paula has done a DRAGONTASTIC & creatively AMIAZING job bringing them to life! In fact, Paula has worked her magic on every little scale of this story & series! PURE GENIUS! I love, Love, LOVE it and I can’t emphasize it enough! I do highly recommend you first read the shorter book 1 – Dragonstone - a lot of what happens in there will give you the background information for what happens here in book 2!! Besides… don’t you want the most out of your reading experience? I can only hope, pray & beg that Paula has many, many more adventures planned for me in the Kingdom of Chalvaren because I NEVER, EVER, EVER want to leave!! There were a few parts that literally brought me to tears they were so magical & CLAWESOME & wondrous! Paula's vivid & vibrant descriptions bring this story to life like no other! The details, the numerous aspects of daily life, the small parts, even some that may seem inconsequential really aren’t! They all help to paint the entire picture in full colors, bright & bold, breathing life into and enhancing the "major" parts, making this a TRULY SPELLBINDINGLY STUNNING MASTERPIECE ON EVERY & ALL LEVELS! And the full color map of The Kingdom of Chalvaren is not only gorgeous, but I referenced it a few times while on my journey just to get a more realistic visual of where I was going! Thank you Paula! With this detailed map, I didn’t get lost or captured! :) The fantastical brilliance of Paula's storytelling, her writing style and creativity not only turn this DRAGONTACULAR book into a living adventure in my mind's eye, but it also speaks to just how phenomenally talented & exceptionally gifted she is! I not only read and watched the story happen, I LIVED IT! With the help of my new friends, I was transported through the portal to the most MIARVELLOUS and INKORTIBLE place! I helped save Magnus, found my One True Love in Kort but I still couldn’t help thinking that this was all too good to be true and that the perfect man that had come for me today, along with Magnus and everything else ROYALTASTIC would all disappear once I opened my eyes, that I was dreaming it all and... ummm, wait, that was actually what happened to MIA, not me! I told you I felt like I had truly experienced it all, that I was REALLY there in The Kingdom of Chalvaren! wink Paula has done what very few authors can do - write a fantasy story & series that resonates within me just as deeply as Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar books do! I have to say that this is THE BEST fantasy book I have read since I first discovered the genre with Mercedes Lackey! Excluding Mercedes’ books, that is. :) Maybe this is a bold statement but it doesn’t make it any less true! I ABSO-FLYING-LUTELY love, Love, LOVE THIS BOOK & SERIES! This book reaffirms my love for fantasy stories and reminds me just why I fell in love with these kinds of books in the first place, and why to this day I am STILL in love with Elves, Dragons & magic all things Fantasy! Mei sunt veri amoris. My One True Love. Forever.

4.5 Stars. This book picks up right after the short prequel, DRAGONSTONE, and I highly recommend reading the one first because the action kicks off right after this one.The first half of the book focuses on Mia and Kort's developing relationship and Mia adjusting to life on Chalvaren. Rich world building and smexy passion abound. But before Mia and Kort can further explore their newfound bond, disaster strikes the kingdom, in the form of Mia's evil wizard aunt, Isa. She was a very compelling villain and I commend the author for that. After that there is nonstop action, danger, nail-biting battle scenes, and tons of dragon bad-a$$ery. I LOVE how well structured and developed the dragons are. Too many fantasy novels don't expand on them enough. An excellent read and page-turner, I highly recommend this book to any fantasy fan.I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
