Granny Bob's Homestyle Cooking Reviews
This is a charming companion to Baugh's Miss You Once Again. Granny Bob weaves her way through this cookbook in such a cute way through postcards and letters mentioning new recipes Granny needs to try or requesting favorites of Granny's. Reading this is like visiting Grandma's house and returning to a time of innocence where food tasted good and no one dieted. I am tempted by many of the recipes but especially the chicken and dumplings and the chocolate chess pie. The recipes are easy to follow, and Baugh handily added substitution charts in the back for all of our dietary needs. Great read!
With Granny Bob’s Homestyle Cooking, Kelly Baugh proves that delicious and satisfying food doesn’t have to be complicated. My own culinary DNA is rooted in the depression era south and so I was raised on wonderfully creative dishes prepared from a few simple ingredients. Granny Bob is obviously cut from the same cloth based on the recipes I’ve tried so far - Hamburger Pie (leftovers are great for lunch the next day), Cat’s Head Biscuits, Chicken Fricassee, and the Chocolate Chess Pie. Every dish a nostalgic indulgence,,, and not once did I have to make a special trip to the market in search of aamchur powder, fennel pollen, or dried avocado leaves. Eating a dish prepared from Granny Bob is like coming home after a long, tortuous, and ill-advised trip to a strange land. Relaxing, comforting, and gratifying. Delightfully formatted in a ‘downhome’ style, with personal notes, comments, and letters accompanying the recipes that tell their own stories, this cookbook is bound to be a favorite in the years to come. I received an uncorrected proof of Granny Bob’s Homestyle Cooking to review, but I just bought my own copy through Amazon because I’ll be preparing more of these dishes. And why take chances with an uncorrected proof?
This fun cookbook looks like a recipe scrapbook. It is filled with so many great, traditional southern favorites. The book is supposed to be from the point of view of a fictional character from Kelly Baugh's novel, Miss You Once Again. There are many fun extras throughout the cookbook; postcards and letters to Granny Bob and little notes she attached to some recipes. I love looking through it and I can't wait to try the recipes like Golden Cheesies and Southern Comfort Slush. :-)
